Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro, Vermont, police force has a serious problem: in a community where a decade could pass without a single murder, the body count is suddenly mounting. Innocent citizens are being killed - and others set up - seemingly orchestrated by a mysterious ski-masked man.

Signs suggest that a three-year-old murder trial might lie at the heart of things, but it's a case that many in the department would prefer remained closed. A man of quiet integrity, Lt. Gunther knows that he must pursue the case to its conclusion, wherever it leads.

Good Detective Novel - Engaging Read

This seemed like it would be great, the first half kept my interest, but the story gradually got less interesting. The main character narration is really good, but everyone else seems to shout out loud, a combination of higher voice volume and A-type annoying personalities really clash with the calm and good voiced Joe. Will try gain and see if it gets better.

After strong first half, started losing interest

Fell in love with this series. Downloaded them all. The first ones are dated - no cell phones, etc. - but it doesn’t matter. You’ll love Joe and even come to enjoy Willy. Mr Taylorson is wonderful. A 10 in my book. A few were narrated by others....not nearly as good - one was a 2 on a scale of 10 and the other was an 8.

Got the whole series

Great book

This mystery was so well written that it stands the rest of time. It takes us back to the 1980’s, without feeling dated. In fact, it provides a fascinating look back at forensic science circa 1988.

At its heart, this is the story of a good man in a bad world, trying to do the right thing, stumbling, and trying again. One of the oldest stories there is, and forever a compelling one.

Well researched, written, and narrated. I’m grateful to have the whole series yet to read.

Excellent
