Publisher's Summary

Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro, Vermont, police force has a serious problem: in a community where a decade could pass without a single murder, the body count is suddenly mounting. Innocent citizens are being killed - and others set up - seemingly orchestrated by a mysterious ski-masked man.

Signs suggest that a three-year-old murder trial might lie at the heart of things, but it's a case that many in the department would prefer remained closed. A man of quiet integrity, Lt. Gunther knows that he must pursue the case to its conclusion, wherever it leads.

The N word is used casually

Got to chapter 4 and someone calls a black man a n******. The other characters don’t even bat an eye. This isn’t just a sign of the times like perhaps in Huckleberry Finn. Can’t justify it in that way. And it doesn’t add anything to the plot. Could have conveyed the same content in 100 different ways. Nope. I’m done.

don't be offended by the characters language

Good Grief! poor ratings on a good story because the language of some of the characters offend. I almost missed a good one due to irrational comments. The good guy is not racist. Racism is part of the story and for something written in the 80's if that offends you then please pass this one by. Oh, hold on tight .... they also smoke in the story.

An enjoyable new detective series!

This one starts with an introduction to Joe Gunther, a private detective on the trail of a serial killer. Perfectly narrated by a favored of mine, Tom Taylorson, I am happy I found this hidden gem. Archer Mayor adds perfect timing as he interweaves humor, suspense and mystery in this thrilling tale. I am looking forward to more in this series. Highly recommended. Worth a treasured credit!

Racist

Unbelievably racist, I cannot believe this has any positive reviews. I would give it zero stars if I could.

Good Detective Novel - Engaging Read

I stumbled upon this author via Audible recommendation.
I was thrilled to be introduced to Joe!
I've blown thru 4 books so far.
I'm a huge Harry Bosch, Lucus Davenport, and Alex Cross fan.
Now, I am also a huge Joe fan!

Good story

This reader is excellent. Sometimes I don’t listen to books by an author bc the reader/performer is poor. The story was adventuresome, the unfolding was curious and interesting. I will listen to more.

Can’t wait to listen again.

I admit I got distracted because the narrator is so smooth and I almost never turned the book off. I’m already looking forward to another listen.

Clever, murder & mystery without excess gore. Minimal adult words, which I personally do not mind.

Very well narrated.

Enjoyed it

I had to listen to this book after seeing the woke culture reviews claim it was racist. As expected it is nothing of the sort and is in fact the opposite. Overall a good listen and the story will keep your interest.

Wasn’t sure at first.

I wasn’t quite sure about this in the beginning, but it turned out to be very enjoyable.

New author for me.

The narrator was definitely better in this than my previous experience of him. Apart from some references to wars, the book didn’t seem dated although I think it was written in the 80’s. The characters were well drawn and likeable in the main. Although, even with all the energy / action Joe puts in sometimes the description of him seemed as though it was referring to a doddering old man! Otherwise, nice to discover a “new” author and series.

Belter of a book

Archer Mayor has introduced a great character in this complicated, very readable and convincing plot. Hope his next book is as good as this one

Pedestrian

A rather old fashioned style of writing with a plodding and ultimately not very interesting plot line. The author does say in his introduction that his intention was not to write a dramatic thriller but something that showed how people get on with their lives. Regretfully he succeeds to well producing a dreary story with too much unnecessary back story and a plot that feels like he’s just made up as he goes along. I also got no sense of time and place, ok there’s a lot of snow in Vermont but that’s about it. What lifts this audiobook is the superlative narrator.
