Publisher's Summary

A sudden burst of radiation is detected beneath the desert in Iran. Alex Hunter – code name Arcadian – and his highly trained incursion team are dropped into the ruins of Persepolis. All they find is an empty underground facility – nothing to explain the gamma spike. It is as if a black hole has swept everything away....

Israel is threatening nuclear war. And someone, or something, is draining the fluids from the bodies of Iranian soldiers in the desert. If a black hole has taken everything, could something have come back? And then another radiation 'event' occurs. An ancient prophecy is unraveling.

Author flattens plot

Would you consider the audio edition of Dark Rising to be better than the print version?

Have not read the print version.

Have you listened to any of Sean Mangan’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Love Sean Mangan's work

Any additional comments?

Please, much as I like and have listen to the authors work, his comments at the start of the story gave away the basic plot line ! It's deflating knowing whats going to happen.<br/><br/>Please! No more author spoilers at the start of stories !

No Spark, No Excitement

Has Dark Rising turned you off from other books in this genre?

Absolutely not.

Any additional comments?

I have not finished the book, not sure if I will spend the time because there are some good books in my Library waiting for me. In my opinion, the author does not have strong writing skills, but his first book was exciting enough to forgive and forget the writing style. This book just does not deliver the excitement, but it might near the end...yet I am asking myself is slogging through the main body worth it?. I will definitely try the next installment, hoping for better.

Clicky-clack mind rending silent scream + a suck

If Alex becomes any more Super, I don't know how the author will keep him within the pages of the book! And I don't want Alex popping out of the pages and hitting me with his powerful kick!

I think the monster from this book, from the other side of a black hole, is related to the monster living under the ice in book one - well, they both click and clatter and are ginormous and have reaching tentacles/limbs; one mimics you and then sucks you dry, the other skips the mimic part and gets right down to sucking your juicies.

There is a bit of a plot here though - stopping the BAD extremists from, SURPRISE, the middle east. The monster is just a side serving of excitement, not the main course (though it does take up a lot of story space). The main course is stopping extremists from plunging the world inside out through a black hole in order to a) corner the market on power generation and b) suck the world inside out through a black hole. Yes, yes, b) kinda eliminates the need for a), but this is fiction after all.

Over all, it is fast paced and reasonably believable. I think it might be just a bit better than book one, because the plot seemed to make more sense (well, assuming you believe humans can/would try to create a black hole). Compared to book 1: Story is more believable, Alex is less believable, the monster is the same believable. Solid 3 in the action adventure genre. Narration is fine (skip the authors intro at the start - it will just annoy you). Not much gore or swearing and no sex.

This is good! Get it.

Any additional comments?

Grieg, I thoroughly enjoy this series and didn't read this until last. It did pull in some information that I didn't "miss" per se, but helped to pull the "whole" together. You are a talented writer. Sean, You are Alex Hunter. To the End. Listener, you will enjoy this one if you love Alex Hunter as much as I do. It may not be the "very" best of the series in my opinion, but it is certainly still by far up to par for the quality of this series. Get it. You won't return it.

Not a Cussler

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Whoever said this author was in the style of Clive Cussler is so totally wrong. That was an insult to Cussler. This book was garbage and I don't know why I listened to it. It took over an hour to even get started. Ridiculous storyline. Thankfully I didn't use another credit on this author. The only thing that was worthwhile at all was the narrator.<br/><br/>One thing this has taught me, pay attention to the bad reviews, much more truthful.

Has Dark Rising turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, there are great authors out there, just not this one.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sean Mangan?

Mangan was fine. When the book started the author was reading and it was awful. I almost quit before the actual book started.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

only the narrator

Any additional comments?

This is more sci fi than a thriller...nothing thrilling or suspenseful about this trash. I know my mother taught me if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all...so I shouldn't written a word.

Beware the writing technique!

A really good story. This is the second of three in this series. I couldn't find this information anywhere and if the author could include it on the cover of his books it would help us to read them in the order they were written. That being said, the stories are pretty much stand alone. Knowing the back story isn't really necessary as Mr Beck brings it up through out the book in the form of the thought processes of some of the characters. The narration of the story would have gotten 5 stars except that several words are mispronounced , which tends to drive me crazy. I heartily recommend this book.

Gripping and exciting

Another great listen from author Greig Beck. Gripping story line which frequently has you on the edge of your seat. The only downside is the long, rambling and (sorry Greig) frankly boring introduction from the author. Perhaps you could shorten your intro and keep it to the essentials? Otherwise I loved this book and look forward to the next in the series.
