Publisher's Summary

In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called "brilliants," and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in - and betray his own kind.

From Marcus Sakey, "a modern master of suspense" (Chicago Sun-Times) and "one of our best storytellers" (Michael Connelly), comes an adventure that’s at once breakneck thriller and shrewd social commentary; a gripping tale of a world fundamentally different and yet horrifyingly similar to our own, where being born gifted can be a terrible curse.

    "Narration is terrible"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Narrator's voice is so difficult to get past. The primary voice is so brooding and deep, like someone impersonating a cliche tough guy voice. His voices for most of the other male characters are very nasal and weaselly. Those were the ones I really couldn't stand.

Would you recommend Brilliance to your friends? Why or why not?

No. Narration is awful and the story isn't even that interesting. Very predictable.

Would you be willing to try another one of Luke Daniels’s performances?

    Nope.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    Nope.

"Story not as interesting as the tag line"

An interesting concept and a pretty good first third. After that it devolves into a very straightforward/very predictable government thriller.

Cooper's abilities mostly vanish in the back of the book and he comes across as a typical quasi military operative. The idea and impact that a world with "brilliant" people doesn't feel thought out. You could substitute agents and terrorists into the characters and the story and its end would mostly be the same.

    "interesting premise, but"

enjoyed the first act. good action scenes, good introduction to an original plot. after awhile, the narration started to irk me. picture a military documentary from the 1960s. that's the voice I heard. every single sentence had an urgency to it, and not in a good way. the narrator used particularly annoying voices for male side characters. there were a couple plot twists in later chapters that I enjoyed. I would have preferred the author spend much more time expanding on the powers and how they would interact in society. what we got was a so so hunt/Chase story for last act. <spoiler> and of course everybody was saved and no one was hurt.
conclusion: an ok book, wouldn't recommend it though.

    "Definitely a different storyline"

I thought this book on audible sale and honestly wasn't expecting much. A reader of Lee Child, I was intrigued by his opinion on the cover of the book. The book took me by surprise in that I was immediately engaged. It didn't seem too far fetched and the people were easy to like or hate. I recommend this book and have already bought the sequel!

    "Such a powerful tale!! "

I loved the narrator and how he brought an amazing story to life! There is nonstop action and enough twists and turns that you can't guess exactly how it's all going to turn out.

"Great book that draws you in"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audiobook, it's a well constructed world that gives a new take on ordinary superpowers, it builds a vivid picture of society slowly collapsing in on itself. With twists and turns abound I was hooked and had to stay in the car just to listen a little longer!

    Roll on book 2!

    Story
"Interesting premise, could be developed further"

Action sci-fi thriller which wants to be a Hollywood movie. Interesting premise - from 1981 on, 1% of children are born with special powers. Not really super-powers like flying, bending spoons, but with extreme pattern recognitions and similar. They are known as "Brilliants" and as they grow up, they start changing the world. American society is polarised and split into normals and "abnorms".

Story will probably evolve into followups - in this one, we follow Agent Cooper fighting against "abnorm terrorists" (being abnorm himself). Story is interesting and tense, with some unexpected but also some very expected twists. However, I think author did not manage to use idea's full potential. Action sequences are interesting and characters well built, but as I see it, story is basically taken from Al-Qaida attack on WTC and then continued on basis of many conspiracy theories evolving after.

Besides that, I would have liked to hear more about the impact on the world - authors focuses on America, and rarely spreads focus out of his main characters.

    "Brilliant Brilliance!"

This book dives headlong into a very fast paced story with lots of suspense, thrills and action. I like Nick Cooper's character and the way he develops throughout the story, the conflict he feels because he himself is a brilliant yet his job is to pursue them. And then everything is turned completely upside down and Nick doesn't know truth from lies or who he can trust. A gripping plot, which is also very thought provoking, and a nail biting conclusion, along with a first rate narrator. Really glad there will be more!

    "Entertaining but predictable"

I'm in now way saying this is a bad book but there really isn't anything new in it. There are so many films like Scanners or X-men that have coverd this concept.

it's fun and entertaining enough but it lacks originality.

I enjoyed the writing style and the narration was great. if you like conspiracy and intrigue you will enjoy this book

    "pedictable"

Ok story , happy with the narrator. Because of the special powers people had I felt that they were adapted to the story as it went along. Predictable because using his children's safety against him, falling for the girl, his boss.not being the person he thought he was.... not much originality.
