Publisher's Summary

They slept for hundreds of years, dreaming of a new home in the Andromeda galaxy. When finally they awake, their dreams of peace are shattered. These colonists - turian, salarian, asari, human, and more - face an uncharted galaxy and threats beyond understanding.

The Nexus is the core from which the colonists will explore their new home. Yet even before the arks arrive, the massive space station sustains critical damage. The entire mission is placed in jeopardy, and security director Sloane Kelly must reassert order while racing to identify the nature of the threat that faces them.

If she fails, the Andromeda Initiative could crumble.

Five Star Review But Be Warned

What made the experience of listening to Mass Effect™ Andromeda: Nexus Uprising the most enjoyable?

The writing and the performance is top notch. The fact that we meet these characters while playing Mass Effect Andromeda adds to it.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sloane Kelly.

Have you listened to any of Fryda Wolff’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

It compares well. I think she did the most recent Brett Battles book but am not sure.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, ideally BEFORE playing Mass Effect Andromeda

Any additional comments?

This book gets five stars from me because it's the highest caliber writing and performance. Here the thing it's a prequel for Mass Effect Andromeda the video game. It's the missing backstory to the game that we hear about as we meet the characters in this book but don't get to see play out because it happens in the past.

The warning in my title refers to the fact that at the end of the novel it has the feel of setting up a future series of books. The problem with that is that those books will never be published as the story will continue and conclude in the video game Mass Effect Andromeda and perhaps forthcoming DLC. Worse the all of the main characters here are seen from the point of view of Ryder and have very limited screen time in the video game. As long as you are okay with all that, and I was, you're in for a very good time with this one.

Disappointing

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Unsure

What was most disappointing about Jason M. Hough and K. C. Alexander ’s story?

I have enjoyed most of the previous Mass Effect books (and the games, of course), but this one was pretty disappointing. The plot drags, and the delivery is uninspired, which is surprising given the narrator's talents in the ME: Andromeda game.

Would you be willing to try another one of Fryda Wolff’s performances?

Possibly

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Mass Effect™ Andromeda: Nexus Uprising?

They should have focused on more action, mystery and character interaction. People bickering in a city-planning meeting gets old fast, and half the book is just taken up with how tired everyone is.

Any additional comments?

The characterization is hit or miss. Tann, Addison and Sloan are interesting characters, but they seem to miss the opportunity to really flesh them out. Especially Sloan, who is just a perpetual ball of anger. Surely she has other emotions.

Engaging

Fryda Wolfe has excellent pace and inflection in her voice. This book really fills in some gaps in the game's narrative and makes me care about the characters. I'm genuinely looking forward to diving deeper into this new galaxy.

Not Even a Great Narrator Can Save This

Fryda Wolff is an excellent narrator and voice actor. She succeeds in making Sloane and the rest of the characters come alive. You can actually hear the angry weariness in Sloane Kelly's voice, the manic depressive nature of Director Addison and the calculating obliviousness of Director Tann. The narrator does a fantastic job, but at the end of the day, these characters are simply not believable in their jobs or even likable and that kills the book.

The story is depressing. Sloane Kelly is particularly unlikable as a main character and unbelievable as head of security. At least the other department heads have the excuse that their superiors died in an unexpected accident. Sloane Kelly is actually in the job she was supposed to have and handles it by going on a hike to clean up some debris in a hangar leaving her second in command to handle things. Argumentative and short-sighted, it's no wonder Sloane Kelly had disciplinary problems in her past. What is a wonder is that she was chosen as head of security on board a ship/station sent as the vanguard to explore another galaxy.

I will get the next book in this series because I enjoyed Fryda Wolff's narration so much. Here's hoping Mac Walters was smart enough to take direction from N.K. Jemisin. No one writes and creates a story the way she can.

Good background info for the game

This book makes several unsympathetic characters in the video game much more understandable, and gives you context as to why they act the way they do. Does not deal with any of the main characters of the game, but there are plenty of recognizable characters. The voice acting is good, minus some of the krogan voices but overall the feeling of growing tension is transmitted well to the reader. I definitely look forward to the next 2 entries in this series as they will hopefully focus more on background info for andromeda rather than the nexus.

Ok story.

The narrator is the best part about this book. the story itself needs more work. slow and uninteresting at times. I often found myself spacing out and having to go back, ad it wasn't able to keep me interested. There are good, even great parts. But they are too few and too far apart...

Andromeda

this is a great book to accompany the new Mass effect game. if you are new to Mass effect and it's lore somethings are going to be confusing. So I recommend doing some reading on the lore or better yet play the games. the narrator was great and the story was great. it shines a new light to some of the characters in the new game and makes them more understandable and relatable as people. Playing through the game some of the characters like Sloan Kelly ( forgive my spelling of her name) I thought where bad just to be bad but this book brings out the motives of the person and makes me consider my dialogue in the game more thoughtfully. TL;DR great book to accompany the new game not so much if you are new to the Mass effect universe.

Must read if you've played the game

Sloane, addison, tann, you understand all that happened before the game starts. Makes me want to play it through again and maybe make some different decisions.

Great insight into Andromeda lore

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book, but I would say that it assumes you know a little about the Mass Effect universe before you start which could be an issue for anyone unfamiliar with the games. It gives you a really good insight into the hardships suffered before the beginning of the games and an understanding of some of the cynicism shown by a lot of the characters within the game.
The story moves fairly rapidly, and as such descriptions of locales and people/aliens seem a little rushed, again this is not a problem if you are familiar with the games but could be an issue for anyone attempting to read this as a standalone.

Only for enthusiasts

If you're a big fan of Mass Effect Andromeda then this will help fill in the gaps of what happened prior to the game, but it's far from being a particularly good book. The pacing is slow and ponderous. You're better off reading a plot summary.

The reading was generally good and it was nice touch that they used the same VA that played female Ryder in the game.

Not my taste, but ...

Not my taste, but nicely performed story about a short uprising and mistakes of the leaders. Not very realistic people in this book though. Do you really go to a colonization attempt and think it is a joyride without any deaths and injuries and discomfort at all?

Just not very interesting

I really enjoyed the mass effect trilogy but haven't yet played andromeda, after this book I am in no rush. The characters were unlikable the story didn't really go anywhere and there was little reference to the larger mass effect universe other than the species involved (and then only four of them)

I could not stop listening to it even when I only had 5 minutes headphones were on. I felt like i was on the Nexus with them. I am currently playing the game and wow did it open my eyes to what was going on and how I'm going to play the game. Great job by reader too.

Great backstory to the Nexus

Great backstory to the nexus. In depth look at how the situation on the Nexus is how it is and insight into characters and their personalities. When i play Andromeda again my opinions on people will be different in a good way. This has me exited about playing Andromeda again. Fryda Wolff does a fantastic job at reading and completely draws you in. I was absorbed the whole time and loved the story. Highly recommended for any Mass Effect and Mass Effect Andromeda fan.

Good story poor performance

A great addition to the mass effect story just a shame they couldn't use some of the voice actors on hand at bioware to provide some variety to the performance.
The voice readers range was very limited and all her characters sounded the same making it hard to distinguish between them

good prelude to the game

so I got this as I am playing the game and it's a good prelude to part of the main story arc. would like it have seen a chapter more from where it left off but still overall it was decent enough
