Publisher's Summary

Beyond the mirror, the darkest fairy tales come alive....

For years, Jacob Reckless has enjoyed the Mirrorworld’s secrets and treasures.

Not anymore.

His younger brother has followed him.

Behind the mirror

I always suspected that the real world of fairy tales would be a lot more Grimm than Disney. This story sucked me right in and kept my interest to the end. The little behind-the-storybook scenes, such as what really happened to Sleeping Beauty, added texture to the story rather than distracting from it. Not a sweet story, and everybody doesn't live happily forever after, but I highly recommend it. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Great!

I don't understand how the other people who have reviewed this book found it hard to follow or uninteresting. This is the first Funke book I've listened to and it seems the rest are more geared towards kids but if you have good grasp of Grimm Fairy and Folk tales, you'll follow the story and love it! I can't wait for more, please tell me there will be more!

Good, But Not Great

The narrator wasn't my favorite. He couldn't capture individual voices, unless they had accents or were women (which all sounded similar) and had me confused about what was thought it said due to poor diction. While eloquent, I think Elliot is more suited to poetry reading than audio books. As for the story, Funke did her usual job of creating beautiful imagery, thought was very predictable and lacked complexity in the characters. I'd recommend this as a light listen to do chores with. Not something you need to focus on, but still entertaining.

uninspired.

a typical parallel world story. Jacob's brother William follows him into the mirror and is attacked and turned into a goyle (sp?) a santient being with skin of semiprecious stone, in his case jade. Jacob sets up to cure/save his brother and risk's his life in the process. you know how some series grab you and you can't wait to get to the next installmnet? This one did not. at the end I found myself thinking I te all ly don't care what happens next.
ok story but not worth perusing. The use the same melody in the Introduction as end as is used in the Fires of Heaven from Robert Jordan's Wheel of time series. I'm going but to relisten to that.

More character development needed but captivating none the less

More detail and back story needed. I often felt like i had picked up in the middle of the story and missed something. None the less, it was still intriguing and kept me listening. By the end you know enough about the characters to be truly invested in them. There are unique and very interesting characters and mirror world is fascinating.

Good book

It was very interesting, and the narration is very good. I am pleased, and it helped me more than just reading it by myself.

Stunning

What made the experience of listening to Reckless the most enjoyable?

The story is so easy to get lost in, I listened to the book while driving and didn't even mind the traffic I was stuck in, because it meant I had more time to listen!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I adored Fox, she was clever, sly and loyal. Not to mention, she had spunk!

Which character – as performed by Elliot Hill – was your favorite?

I enjoyed the voice of the Valiant. It was great, sneaky and hard to trust, which really fit the story and the character.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The wedding. George R.R. Martin has started a movement.

Any additional comments?

I loved the Inkheart series, and Funke has amazed me once more, I'm in love! Even as I write this review, I'm listening to the second book! It is wonderful in so many ways!

A fairy story.

I don't know what it was about this book that didn't grab me & hold my interest as I expected. I just never felt as though I cared about any of the characters and I definitely thought the narrator's voice was too bland to portray all the voices well.
I really wanted to love the Mirrorworld as much as Funke's Inkworld but I couldn't there's no Dustfinger or Capricorn here and Jacob isn't dynamic enough to make a great read.
Sorry ... just 3* from me.

Good story for the kids to listen to and Adults

This is a good story, but will definitely be followed on by further books as the story is a bit unfinished.
Suitable for boys and girls.
We listened to it with my 9 year old daughter and 13 year old son who both enjoyed it.
Narrators voice is good - not annoying like some of them can be!
