Publisher's summary

There’s something in the water in this hallucinatory short story by Paul Tremblay, bestselling author of The Cabin at the End of the World and The Beast You Are.

Journalist Heidi Cohen is in Cape Cod investigating the sources of recurring toxic algae blooms along the coast. A local named Jimmy has his own theory for her. Every year the fetid growth gets worse—but it’s been going on longer than anyone knows. Decades ago, something happened to Jimmy that he’s never forgotten. Is Heidi ready for the real story?

Paul Tremblay’s In Bloom is part of Creature Feature, a collection of devilishly creepy stories that tingle the spine and twist the mind. They can be read or listened to in one petrifying sitting.

Good but not great

This one just didn't come together quite as well as the other stories in this collection for me. I still liked it, though

That's it?

I was interested in the story but it went nowhere. Female narrator was better than the male

Not Tremblay’s best

I’m not sure what was going on here but I didn’t like it. And I hate saying that because I’m a fan of the author. But this just ain’t it.

story was all over the place and ended so abruptly.

i couldn't follow or get into the story. It seems like the author had a good idea in the beginning but didn't know how to explain or find a good direction for the book

Meh

I read a sci-fi story by Paul Tremblay that i loved, so I'm really disappointed by this one. The narrators were Ugg!! The guy's voice was waaay too deep. It hurt my ears and my brain. There was waaaay too much baseball stuff in the story he told. And idk it felt like the build-up and reveal of this monster, w/e it was, could've been a lot better

Not great

Bizarre. This book was all over and difficult to follow. The main plot when wrapped up was stupid and not worth wasting time on. Perhaps if this story was written not so sporadically it would work as a Halloween story for younger kids. IDK

As it is, I do not recommend this book. 👎

Huh?

I must have missed something. The book seems to me to end without finishing. It didn't seem too scary.

Really bad!

I normally love Paul Tremblay’s work, but this was really bad. The female narrator was so annoying. That aside, the story just didn’t go anywhere, and the ending was stupid. I have such a love-hate relationship with this author, because he’s written some of my favorite stories/books but when he writes a bad one, it’s really bad!

Decent

In Bloom is the fourth book I read in this collection and the least scariest IMO.

Jimmy recalls his childhood experience of toxic algae that grows near a field of America's favorite pastime. ⚾ Not a bad story but I didn't love it as much as the others.

Hmmmmm…

Well, at least I was able to get all the way through it without suffering too much. Better than Malerman’s story because at least the narration here was pretty decent. Otherwise, pretty unimpressive. 🫤
