Publisher's summary

Some chilling campfire tales ring too true to ignore. For one young woman, an urban legend calls her into the woods in a spine-tingling short story by the bestselling author of Bird Box.

The dense Michigan forest. Haunting wails. The clip-clop of demon hooves on a bridge to nowhere. It’s more than a tall tale to Brenda Jennings, whose sister disappeared in those woods one fateful night. Three years later, on a solo stakeout in the dark, Brenda goes in after her. She’s desperate for answers, and terrified to find what lies waiting on the other side of that bridge.

Josh Malerman’s It Waits in the Woods is part of Creature Feature, a collection of devilishly creepy stories that tingle the spine and twist the mind. They can be read or listened to in one petrifying sitting.

Malerman is a national treasure.

Malerman is slowly becoming one of my favored horror authors. his short stories are hit or miss for me but they are never run of the mill. this one is a hit.

deep characters, wonderful prose, and expertly executed suspense. such a short story managed to transport me to another world.

the narrator is one of the best I've heard recently as well. she nails every little intonation, pause and emotion, sounding genuinely panicked when the character is in trouble and then as soothing as honey when the character reminisces about the past.

Good narration; loooooong story

Starts off well but gets bogged down by endless musings on the nature of amateur iPhone filmmaking. I wish I was kidding. Another reviewer compared it to creepypasta and I can't disagree. The narrator was good and she does a very unnerving voice it the back end of the story that sent chills up my spine. However I did have to check the print version of the story to figure out what she was saying.

Very good classic horror story. The writer is able to paint a very visual story with words and the narrator was excellent.

Fun Short Read

This was a fun read; you did not have to think much about the plot. It was pretty apparent from the start what would happen. However, it was a relaxing reading while doing housework

Excellent, spine-chilling short

This was first book I’ve read in a long time that actually gave me goosebumps. The story’s great but the narration is beyond amazing!

Nightmares and family ties

Really fantastic story of a family torn apart by loss and one girls determination to use her hobby to set things back to right. Wished for a bit more, but really enjoyed it.

Chilling story with a great narration!

The story itself was a wonderfully and chillingly written take on woodsy creatures, but what really added the creep factor was the narrator’s voice! The gaspy tone she took when speaking as the creature and the sister did the story more justice than I could have reading it in my head.

Great job all around!

Fantastic narrative

This story was good, but I have to admit the narrator took it up a star and a notch for me! Loved the ending.
