Imagine the worst thing a friend could ever do.

This is worse.

When Mel receives an unexpected email from her oldest friend Abi, it brings back memories she thought she had buried forever. Their friendship belonged in the past. To those carefree days at university.

But Abi is in trouble and needs Mel’s help, and she wants a place to stay. Just for a few days, while she sorts things out. It’s the least Mel can do.

After all, friends look out for each other, don’t they?

I Invited Her In is a blistering tale of wanting what you can’t have, jealousy, and revenge from Sunday Times best-seller Adele Parks.

Well Done, I will Be Reading More From Adele Parks

'I Invited Her In' is a wonderful title for this novel. I was very impressed with Ms. Parks writing style as this is the first one of her books I have listened to.

A wife and mother of three allows an old college friend to come and stay with her as she's down on her luck and in the midst of a divorce. The problem is, her house guest has another reason for staying with her old friend. As the story unravels, tension sparks, tempers flare and a once-tight-knit family is on the verge of destruction.

What I liked most about Parks is that she made the villain of the story sort of likable. For the first time, I felt like the villain had a reason to be angry. I enjoyed the characters and the entire story, and I am looking forward to reading more from Ms. Parks.

Melanie

I enjoyed the story overall, but I do not like characters like Melanie. She was the worse.

Satisfying story and superb narration

The story is interesting and gripping, and the end very satisfying. The narration is by the superb Joanne Froggatt.

what's not to love about this book. first off. not what I was expecting, a few gtfo moments that I thoroughly enjoyed. I finished in 2 days. thought about the characters when I wasn't reading. definitely a good sign. narration was spot on. perfect "inflections. definitely worth credit.
nice to get a book once in awhile that isn't so dang predictable. this is one if those

Entertaining but lacks depth in every way

The first few chapters of this book I was relatively entertained. I saw immediately that, the characters were all lacking a third dimension. At first I expected that, given some time to develop, this would change. However, about halfway through I realized that this was never going to happen, and to further frustrate the situation, there is never a real “sense of place” established. The language is technically nice but there is a complete void where depth, descriptive language, and atmosphere should be.
It is shallow in every way.
I hate saying this because I certainly am not capable of just sitting down and writing a novel that people would pay to read (or listen to)and the talent just to able to do so is rare and it’s a hard road to become a successful author.
However, it’s just shallow, the characters are all vapid and 2D and I just couldn’t care enough about any of these people to keep me invested(or even GET me invested) in the outcome.
This was the same experience I had with “Just My Luck” and I truly hoped that was a fluke because I saw much potential with Adele Parks.
The performance by the lovely Joanne Froggett is exceptional, as her performances always seem to be.
You may enjoy it, but I couldn’t finish.
Maybe if you’re intentionally looking for something kind of light and easy, without any graphic violence or other disturbing content, something more surface, then give it a shot.
It’s not terrible. It’s just a bit shallow.

Credit-worthy read. There is a lot beneath the ascending plot.

The lengthy post-story interview is probably the reason for the low amount of reviews. I’m guessing people didn’t reach beyond the end and therefore weren’t prompted or forgot to write a review.
The story was an interesting character study and showed how norms do or don’t change in different generations. I enjoyed the British setting and felt the details and descriptions kept the story visual. Joanne Froggit’s narration was superb.

A Great Listen

Even though I found the book predictable, I really enjoyed listening. The characters were so well developed. It felt like I knew them. The plot was also very well thought out and put together. The book is long but didn't feel slow. I'd say it's worth the credit.

An Interesting Complicated Story

I really enjoyed the characters in this book. The book definitely held my attention. Many different types of relationship dynamics are explored throughout while the characters struggle dealing with real life issues.
