A Good Sequel

I really enjoyed the first book of this series. I have been waiting for this second book to be released. I definitely enjoyed this book too, though not quite as much as the first. Without giving any spoilers, I’m just not a fan of romantic drama.
There are some excellent plot points that were introduced and then properly explored. The mystery of Ember’s past and family history is one of those points, along with the Emperor’s Daughter. There is also some compelling character development of Ember, but also a few others.
Stacey Glemboski did a fabulous job of narrating. Her gypsy accent really sets Ember apart from the other characters, and she doesn’t strain to perform the male voices. Her storytelling is excellent too. I definitely enjoy her work.

Ember's further adventures in space

This is the second book in a sequel about Ember, a young Roma woman, who has the extraordinary power to control the life force, or light, of those around her. The first book impressed me with its premise and delivery.

This book takes off from where the last book ended. Ember and her refugee friends are off to meet the Daughter. Ember is helping her in hopes to get back to Stefan so they can eventually flee the conflict entirely. Ember is strong as a character, but she goes through a lot in a short time. This makes her go through an emotional journey that might make her seem weak.

The big change in this book is the introduction of Commander Caine's son Ruben, who looks like the spitting image of his father, but he holds one vital secret. He's a wily character who appears to serve no one's interest but his own. It comes up near the end as the story sets up for what will be book three.

Because I did listen to this via audio, it is worth commenting on Stacy Glemboski's performance. Her accent for Ember is very distinct and consistent. I don't know if this really is what modern Roma sound like, but I appreciate that it's always clear. The rest of her narration just makes it easy to slip into the story. That's how good narration should be.

I do recommend this book, but realistically it is better for those who have already read and enjoyed book 1. If you haven't read either of them, some selling points are that this is a space adventure with a POC heroine. There are battles and military, different humanoid cultures. This could be read equally well by both YA and Adult readers.

Like book 1? Won't be disappointed with book 2!

This book is definitely best pickup up immediately after book 1 as it jumps right back into the story where the first left off. With that said, it was just as enjoyable as I remember the first book being. We get to hear how Ember grows into her power, and how her perception of her power changes as the book progresses. Without spoiling anything, I feel like there was a satisfactory amount of story progression and the book ends in a satisfactory manner while also setting us up for an interesting continuation in book 3!

Stacey Glemboski's narration was top-notch! Great character voicing (really great Ember voice) and overall performance. I look forward to hearing her narrate book 3!

Definitely a recommended listen if you enjoyed book 1!

A new Ember!

In book two, Ember becomes Lady Flare (it's not a compliment.) I'm not sure I like this Ember. I mean, she was still a total badazz and can kill people with a thought, but she had some seriously bad decision-making in this book. Seriously. Bad.

Her survival in book one was hard fought with even harder lessons learned. Or so we thought. In this book, it's like Ember forgot what she was fighting for, or who, and kinda became the enemy. Kinda.

Through it all, the narration was beyond exceptional. Glemboski was clear and concise and was quite effective in bringing out the mental tug-of-war that Ember/Lady Flare endured.

I liked how this book ended and look forward to the next installment.

Good but not as good as the original

When you're a big fan of the original you hope the newest chapter in the series is just as good, it was not the case this time. The plot was simply not as strong. and the romance was not done well.

Good sequel

Lately I’ve noticed a large increase in strong female characters. This book does well with that. She is not some helpless princess or some over powered everyone loves you Mary Sue. She is different and honestly stronger than I may of been in that situation considering she was basically a slave in the last book oh great job Empire. Anyway I’m trying. To not spoil this for you but it’s a great story. Book 3 comes out soon.

I was given a free copy of the audio book in trade for my honest review and if it was a bad book it would of received a bad review.

A Nice Surprise!

Since I missed the 1st in this series, I was not sure about starting with #2. I enjoyed this. It was a new and unique new fantasy world. Just enough background so I was not lost. Lots of intrigue and manipulation going on. It kept you guessing as to which side Amber should help.
The narrator did a great job. her voice was clear and expressive. She did not strain to do the male voices. It flowed easily and she made it work.
It ended just the way I like, wrapping up the current struggle and on to the next.

Great story!

I thoroughly enjoyed this second audiobook in this series! The characters are vibrant and the plot is fast paced. The heroine must deal with her growing powers and has committed to help the Union fight the Empire, even though she isn’t sure it’s the right path. The Emperor wants to get her back, but a stunning double cross surprises Ember. The Daughter has schemes of her own and has found another flare, but he is unstable. Can Stephen help Ember find her way before it’s too late for them all? Narration was excellent!

Fight of their lives in so many ways

I loved getting back into this awesome story. Ember and Stefan are in for the fight of their life and they are so far away from each other. I love how you get to see whats going on with both of them and you see how devious the leaders really are around them. I love how this story has drama action suspense and just about everything else. While I was listening to Stacey narrate in her wonderful voice I was on the edge of my seat and almost listened to it all in one sitting. I'm absolutely loving this series and I can't wait to listen to the 3rd book and get sucked in again.

A good read

This Audio book is well constructed with a great variety of characters...... it is very likely that most listeners who enjoy
this genre will be entertained.

The Narrator had a good command of the material and made it a enjoyable experience.
