Publisher's Summary

In his 14th book, best-selling author Nicholas Sparks tells the unforgettable story of a man whose brushes with death lead him to the love of his life.

Is there really such thing as a lucky charm? The hero of Nicholas Sparks's new novel believes he's found one in the form of a photograph of a smiling woman he's never met, but who he comes to believe holds the key to his destiny. The chain of events that leads to him possessing the photograph and finding the woman pictured in it is the stuff of love stories only a master such as Sparks can write.

    "I got bored"

I just could not listen to the whole book, I did fast forward so I would hear the ending.
Just did not hold my interest, and I do enjoy a good romance.

    "Good read"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend and I have recommended this to friends. It was a good story.

Which character – as performed by John Bedford Lloyd – was your favorite?

I liked Victor. He really brought Victor alive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    The ending was very sad.

    Any additional comments?

Nana was my favorite character. She was funny and witty. I liked Victor and Logan's friendship a lot. Overall it was a good book.

"If you suspend disbelief, this is a good story."
What made the experience of listening to The Lucky One the most enjoyable?

As usual, Sparks gives us great character development and an interesting story line. Up to a point, it's easy to buy into his premise, even though it's a bit far fetched. But why not? Why wouldn't an ex soldier weary of battle traumas walk across the country to heal and to find someone who has become a touchstone to him? Without giving away the story line, I'll just say that I was with him until the main character suddenly did something so out of character that I turned it off in disappointment, thinking "I just can't believe this story any longer." After finishing the book, I still couldn't decide why that particular incident was included.

The ending which was telegraphed did turn at the end and it was overall a satisfying story with very attractive characters. The boy, the dog, and the grandmother were especially well done and fun to watch. Sparks knows how to give his characters depth and human interest, which is why I keep going back to him.

What did you like best about this story?

The character development, especially of the minor characters, which were as fully drawn as the two lead characters. Even the town played a character role and was well done.

How could the performance have been better?

The reader's "female voice" and "child's voice" were really terrible and I never could accept his reading of the characters. He made the female character sound weak and insipid. I think it would have been better to simply read without trying to sound female, and leave it to the listener to provide her "voice". I found myself second guessing him throughout and thinking of how it should have sounded. It's not necessary for the reader to "act" in order to get the character across, and in this case, it was the only really jarring element in an otherwise well done production.

    Any additional comments?

I can recommend this, but with the caveat that you'll have to put up with an annoying voice.

    "Great Book!"

Logan should be a hero to everyone who reads this. Just the kind of guy every girl dreams about. (especially when you've seen Zach Effron in the previews for the movie)
Great love story. I loved all the characters! I probably looked real dumb sitting around giggling to myself at certain parts. The narrator took a minute to get used to but overall i think he did well.

    "Underwhelming"
Would you try another book from Nicholas Sparks and/or John Bedford Lloyd?

I would try another...but if they were the same as this...that would be the end of it.

Would you recommend The Lucky One to your friends? Why or why not?

No. The whole thing was a bit underwhelming to me. The only reason I picked this book was because I wanted to see the movie. I really liked the beginning of this book. Things took a turn south when further info was revealed about who the pervert sheriff was. I had a hard time reconciling that he could have been perceived as 'normal' some of the time but that he had such huge character flaws that spread the gamut in how he treated women and even his own child.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

His female characters made him sound like Tootsie or Mrs. Doubtfire...like a man doing a woman's voice badly with a terrible southern accent.

    "Very Lucky Indeed"
If you could sum up The Lucky One in three words, what would they be?

    romantic, sweet, angsty

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Lucky One?

The moment they see each other for the first time.

What does John Bedford Lloyd bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice was steady and flowed perfectly with the tone of the story. You could easily follow the twists and turns by the hints of this wonderful narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES!!!! But of course I couldn't. I read it in two days though. :)

    Any additional comments?

Fantastic read. Another great Spark's book.

I especially liked the surprise ending-so good-it doesn't happen until the epilogue, so be sure to keep listening.

    "Worst book ever downloaded."

It pains me to write a negative review. I just don't like to. But this was an unforgivably bad book, and I feel a responsibility to warn others. I am frankly puzzled by the positive reviews. In the years that I taught creative writing, I don't think any college student ever turned in anything this bad. The writing is painfully trite, the characters are stereotypes, the plot is predictable, and there are more cliches per square inch than I have ever seen on a printed page. I am so sorry I wasted a credit when I have a wish list a mile long. Worst book ever downloaded...or read in any form.
