Publisher's Summary

No matter what you heard or thought about the movie version of Strip Tease, forget it. Film simply can’t catch the layers of humor, satire, and imagination that author Carl Hiaasen creates in each of his novels.

When a deranged Florida congressman falls for a gorgeous but virtuous stripper, he dedicates himself to pursuing this tasselled princess. Not only is she a real beauty, she’s a damsel in distress. The effects of his quest will ripple through the spotlights of the strip joint, the sugar cane fields of south Florida, and some powerful political careers.

Fueled by innocent lust and dizzy miscalculations, this story will keep you howling with surprise. George Wilson’s colorful narration is the perfect vehicle for Carl Hiaasen’s twisted fairy tale.

What the Critics Say

“Rough, raucous, and filled with lovable losers, Strip Tease is a caper novel for readers not afraid to laugh out loud.” (People)

“Reading a Hiaasen book is always a high-speed boat ride where laughter can turn to horror and disaster at any moment. Hearing the story aloud adds a dose of realism and sensation; these characters really could be driving around the streets …” (AudioFile)

    Story
    "Predictable"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. I thought the story line was predictable. The narrator kept mistaking a couple of his character voices.

What could Carl Hiaasen have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I love Carl Hiaasen's work. This book didn't seem to have the spark and hilarity that his other books contained. The characters didn't seem colorful like his other stories.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator, who I have listened to before (which is why I am surprised this happeneed) could have kept his voices in alignment. At one time I couldn't tell if I was listening the the detective or Chad.

    Story
    "Fire the recording engineer!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Major problem with George Wilson's narration is not his voice or cadence, it's having to listen to him swallow. Like listening to someone talk while chewing gum - very annoying. Are we hearing him taking drinks of water or is he over-salivating? After 7 hours I could not listen to any more.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I have enjoyed reading Carl Hiaasen stories before and will enjoy reading this one. Listening to this audio book was a huge mistake.

"Bad acting takes away from story enjoyment"

Terrible narration...a man doing female voices is ridiculous. Suggestion?: step further away from mic when taking deep breaths between voices...don't need to hear your licking your lips for 8 hours.

Leave the voices of the different characters up to the readers...your attempts at impersonations was just awful and horribly detracted from one of my favorite authors. If this is typical of all audio books, will go back to reading them personally.

    "Mildly amusing Florida shenanigans. "

The reader did a really good job, but the editor or director really dropped the ball as you can repeatedly hear the narrator swallow and clear his throat between paragraphs.

The story itself was amusing, with the oddball nuts you find in the sunshine state (I live there) but I can't recommend it any more than that.

    "Typical Hiaasen Crazy Characters"

Hiaasen once again comes up with some crazy characters and storyline. From a crooked love crazed politician to a stopper that dances with a snake, the story moves along from one crazy to another. George Wilson does a great job of narrating and bringing the characters to life.

"Not the best Carl Hiaasen I've read"

it struck me that the story line is not far from the truth when it comes to American politics. One need only look at what Trump gets up to. It's been a while since I've read any of Carl Hiaasen's books but this one is definitely not one of his best
