Publisher's Summary

In a sleepy steel-mill town, the ultimate battle between Good and Evil is about to begin....

Sinnissippi Park, in Hopewell, Illinois, has long hidden a mysterious evil, locked away from humankind by powers greater than most could even imagine. But now the malevolent creatures that normally skulk in the shadows of the park grow bolder, and old secrets hint at a violent explosion.

The brewing conflict draws John Ross to Hopewell. A Knight of the Word, Ross is plagued by nightmares that tell him someone evil is coming to unleash an ancient horror upon the world. Caught between them is 14-year-old Nest Freemark, who senses that something is terribly wrong but has not yet learned to wield the budding power that sets her apart from her friends.

Now the future of humanity depends upon a man haunted by his dreams and a gifted young girl - two souls who will discover what survives when hope and innocence are shattered forever....

Great tale, brings me back to my youth

I remember reading the Sword of Shannara trilogy when I was young and enjoying it immensely, even though the initial novel reminded me a lot of Tolkien. Picked up this book recently and was immediately pulled back into the heady days of the summers of my youth. A great blend of characters, settings, small towns, good versus evil and make believe "magic". George Wilson's narration is excellent, bringing the characters to life and making the story sound believable. Five stars.

Boring and depressing

A missed opportunity to write another “pilgrims progress” poke yourself in the eye and you’ll know the pain of listening or reading this depressing book. I love most of the terry books books.

A nice distraction.

It starts a little slow, to fill in the needed background, but picks up nicely.

Great story horrible reader

Thank goodness this book had a great storyline, because the reader was absolutely awful. If the story wasn’t so good, I would’ve stopped the book within the first three chapters. The reader swallows so hard and often it drives me crazy!

really superb piece of writing

This is really enjoyable portrayal of small town USA beautifully crafted in which fantasy and magic is so carefully woven as to make it real. it has none of the otherworldliness of off world fantasy but more the realm that lies fleeting in the corner of your eye, things that go bump in the night or that feeling that makes your hackles rise. if you love the gentle cadence of books like to kill a mocking bird then you will love this. finally there is a nostalgia for a saner time than we have now and a reflection that the demons are perhaps on the ascendancy and we have lost our way.
