    "Really bad book!!!"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A good book would have made all the world of difference. This was bad literature with a bad story.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Something much better written

What didn’t you like about Becca Battoe’s performance?

It wasn't her, it was the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disgust.

    Any additional comments?

Don't understand what everyone thinks is so great about this book, it was really bad.

What did you like best about Fifty Shades of Grey? What did you like least?

It was something different and light entertainment but a little repetitive.

Has Fifty Shades of Grey turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Not really

Did Becca Battoe do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

She was quite good but perhaps a male voice for Christian would have been better

    Any additional comments?

It was entertaining enough - a bit of a laugh - nudge, nudge, wink, wink

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Adults who liked twilight. I didn't realise it started as a Twilight fanfiction, it didn't take much listening to start wondering why it sounded like I was hearing Twilight all over again and google it.

What was most disappointing about E L James’s story?

The use of the same character tropes from Twilight. The clumsy, doesn't-realise-she-is-attractive, blank-slate-so-you-can-put-yourself-in-her-shoes main character, the bumbling mother who needs her daughter or new husband to look after her, the father figure of few words, the 'hero' who knows he is dangerous for her but can't stay away, the best friend who secretly loves her and presses his intentions... Seriously, non of these characterisations are flattering to anyone.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Becca Battoe?

    Tavia Gilbert perhaps

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

no idea, I only listened to a couple of hours before removing it from my device.

What would have made Fifty Shades of Grey better?

There was no zero star option and I was forced to choose 1 star. There is no good bits in this book not even the sex. Yes. Not even the sex.

What could E L James have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Her style of writing is pubescent. I cannot believe that an adult woman wrote this book and one with 2 kids. She is obviously still stuck in puberty. The main character only knows 10 adjectives. The male lead is not believable and come on…. he is a billionaire with no signs of intelligence. Not only that, the narrator sounds like a teenager?!? Sigh. I can’t write for $#% and I acknowledge that. This author should also acknowledge that she can’t write for #$% and acknowledge that even sex can’t save this book. But unfortunately not everyone thinks like me. Obviously some women who do not read any other romance novels or do know what good sex is bought this book and gave it 5 stars. This book is crap. Do not waste your time or your money. If you wanted porn, just Google it or pick up a good erotic novelist.

How could the performance have been better?

Not the Narrator's fault. She was only doing her job and reading what was on paper... crap.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fifty Shades of Grey?

the whole book would have been cut and not even published

    Any additional comments?

The standards of literature is dropped alarmingly as this book made the NYT Best Selling list.

I am an artist, living in Cairns, Queensland, Australia right next to the Great Barrier Reef. I listen to audiobooks everyday while making art and on into the night. I really like mysteries with a good serving of suspense on the side that keep you wondering right to the end. However, I won't say no to any entertaining and well written book which has been read by an excellent narrator.

    "A little bit boring!"

I guess because it's fairly repetitive and, for me, not really that erotic. I think Lisa Kleypas' books are a lot more so. I'm half way through part 3 and will finish it but I doubt that I will buy the rest of the trilogy. Mr Grey is a bit too grey for me; he just doesn't do it for me and if I hear anyone say "oh my" anytime soon, I'll feel like hitting them!

"EXCEPTIONAL listen.. Thank you Becca Battoe"

I must say that this book was exceptional.
i was looking for atleast one flaw so that I can say not listening to this book earlier was no harm just to do myself justice but to my surprise I damned myself for the late listen. :(
to you E L James you have made my day a lot on several occasions, the way the book was written was exquisite and I am not just saying this for word sake but you did all your fans justice. the stages that the book gradually increased, the way that the characters were developed, their personalities that meshed so wonderfully I must say that you took time out to write this book in which I do appreciate, you can know when someone take the time out to do something I could feel that in every words of this book when Anastasia Steele went to interview Christian Grey and bare in mind that the interview was for her friend so for the book to turn out this way it took one heck of an U turn in which did got me obsessed possessed and will keep this book 4ever
    THANK YOU SO MUCH E L James :-) .............

Now Becca Battoe are you only human????? because I did not know that such talent exist in one person and I really do hope that when I listen to more books with you I will not have to take this back (I really hope that you will keep my 5 star ratings).. what I would really like to know is how did you know that this book was just so perfect for that well trained, refreshing breathtakingly beautiful, elegant, divine, precious, tantalizing and sweet voice. you played all these characters as they were ought to be played I really n truly enjoyed your narration, perfect book perfect voice can it get any better??? the way you portrayed the male voices was beautiful. I know that you did your best because listening to the book really takes my breath away I was awwed and I know that I was not the only person. You are one hell of a narrator you took this book and made it your own in which that's what made this book sooooooooo special.
I wonder did E L James wrote this book and handed it to you herself or were you stunned by the book and wanted to read this for the world at hand. THANK YOU ALSO for making this book into an unforeseen movie you did us listener justice.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Fifty Shades of Grey?

LOVE the story in general. So much happened in the novel, it moved fast and was always dramatic. I couldnt put it down.

Which character – as performed by Becca Battoe – was your favorite?

Christian Grey! OH Always Christian Grey!

If you could take any character from Fifty Shades of Grey out to dinner, who would it be and why?

    CHRISTIAN GREY!

Where does Fifty Shades of Grey rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It was fabulous. Great story, great storytelling. Becca Battoe just brought the characters to life.

What other book might you compare Fifty Shades of Grey to and why?

The time travelers wife read by Fred Berman, Phoebe Strole. They did a great job, but Becca was a cut above!

What about Becca Battoe’s performance did you like?

Her ability to really create characters with her narration. The mood and warmth or lack of she would create.

If you could rename Fifty Shades of Grey, what would you call it?

its too cool a name, I wouldnt call it anything else! Hat off to EL James! She's amazing!

Where does Fifty Shades of Grey rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the best. Not only is it a good story, but the narator Becca Battoe is the BEST that I've listen to so far.

What other book might you compare Fifty Shades of Grey to and why?

I haven't read any others like this.

Have you listened to any of Becca Battoe’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    I haven't yet, but I absoluetly will

If you could take any character from Fifty Shades of Grey out to dinner, who would it be and why?

If it's me taking them out, I would say Kate or Anna.. But I would definitely let Mr Fifty-Shades take me to dinner any time.

I need to have a quiet word with myself, I finally succumbed and bought the book that I had judiciously avoided for so long, why oh why did I do it.

Apart from the grammar, the story line is cringe worthy, the characters are ridiculous and to round it off I have never listened to such a poor narrator, it was dreadful.

    "Extremely surprising"

I decided to download 50 Shades as I do a lot of driving at work and therefore a lot of time to kill. Of course I'd heard of the whirlwind the books, as well as the films, had created. These were grounded in laughing reviews at how terrible they were (especially the film which I had flicked through myself and came to the same conclusion) and how it's just another 'badly written erotic novel'. So for the time being, I took their wisdom and stayed away.

Now at a bit of a loss as to the next super easy book to listen to a few years down the line, I found myself thinking: how can I possibly form an opinion of these if I haven't read them myself? Dazed night-shift curiosity got the better of me and I downloaded it.

At first I literally sighed and rolled my eyes at the cheesey American accent and the bluntness of the writing. I thought I can at least give it the decency to get through the first chapter.

Which I did, and found myself excited to listen to the next. And the next. And the next. Now I've finished, I couldn't download the next book in the series sooner. The plot developed and thickened and got me wanting more. The erotic sections were just as they needed to be - a bit of fun every now and then but I always kept thinking: at least this has got a good plot I can follow. At the end, I even found myself bubbling with a bit of emotion thinking: no! It can't finish like this! On top of that, I finished this book in about a week - quite a feat for me!

Once you wade through the painstaking acceptance of Battoe's attempt at male voices (it sounds like a young child making fun of their male elders) and British accent (I laughed every time she tried, but try she did! Thank god it was only one chapter), I found her voice actually fitted Ana's quite well. And since the book is almost one big monologue, I appreciated it by the end.

Needless to say the book surprised me and I surprised myself by actually enjoying it - a lot. The second film is due to come out any time now, and maybe I'll go see it in a new light - that the casting isn't as awful as I first thought but those all important scenes leave a lot to be desired! Very excited to start the second book and see which path it takes.

Would you consider the audio edition of Fifty Shades of Grey to be better than the print version?

I would say no as the performance is a little distracting

What other book might you compare Fifty Shades of Grey to, and why?

I cannot think of one perhaps a Jackie Collins novel but that maybe a little more grown up.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I think a different voice would suit the story better, perhaps someone a little older

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Anastasia finding her first serious relationship with a bang and wanting to know more about what makes Christian Grey the man he becomes and his fear of being touched.

    Any additional comments?

I decided buy both the audio and ebook mainly to see what the craze was about, I figured it would be full of sex and raunch and story light. It revolves around a young sexually inexperienced young woman Anastasia Steele, who interviews a young wealthy businessman (Christian Grey) as a favour to her friend, she is awkward and clumsy and literally falls into his office and from then on she agrees to a date with him and enters into a world she has never known. His sexual tastes are such that his lawyer insists he gets the woman he decides to act out his fantasies for want of a better word to sign a non disclosure agreement which is very detailed and once they have read and understood the so called rules and sign then it's all systems go.

In this case Anastasia is a virgin and has no other sexual experiences to compare, there is a strong sexual chemistry but has Ana bitten off more than she can chew?

As much as this story centres around their sexual encounters I found myself drawn to what made Christian the way he is and why he never wants to be touched, I wonder if he can ever totally let go as he as he puts it "I exercise control in all things" I will watch the movie and revisit this review to see how it plays out as some elements may commute better on screen.

Having read some of the reviews regarding the narrator I felt she was about right as Anastasia is very naive in lots of ways and that's what I feel is captured but as this is a trilogy I would like to hear a voice that is more confident and slightly more mature as Anastasia starts to grow.
