Publisher's Summary

To the nobles who live in Benden Weyr, Lessa is nothing but a ragged kitchen girl. For most of her life, she has survived by serving those who betrayed her father and took over his lands. Now the time has come for Lessa to shed her disguise and take back her stolen birthright.

But everything changes when she meets a queen dragon. The bond they share will be deep and last forever. It will protect them when, for the first time in centuries, Lessa's world is threatened by Thread, an evil substance that falls like rain and destroys everything it touches.

Dragons and their Riders once protected the planet from Thread, but there are very few of them left these days. Now brave Lessa must risk her life, and the life of her beloved dragon, to save her beautiful world....

Skip this and go for Unabridged

this abridged version is read too fast and cuts out too much too keep up, I also found the readers voice to be annoying. The unabridged versions are waay better and totally worth it.

Does follow the book!

I was listening to the audio, it wasn’t making sense. So I downloaded the book from the library… And the sentences she is saying do not match the print. It’s like sentences have been skipped over. At least now I know why I am not understanding the story. What a waste of a purchase! How do I get my money back?

fast and abridged

The narrator spoke faster than was comfortable, she sounded rushed the entire time, like she had too much coffee or something. I read this book a long time ago, but even though it's been a while, the were sections and dialogue cut out, which really rubbed me the wrong way.

Missing portions

I love this story, but unfortunately in this version the narrator skips a lot of sentences from the book.

Should have realized its abridged!!!

This is a book that I have loved since I was 12. Its like comfort food for me. In fact I have replaced it on my bookshelf I can't tell you how many times, as the paperback binding is always so terrible that it falls apart in my hands as I read or I give it away to someone who hopefully loves it as much as I do. So I hesitated to buy it here, since I already own it in hardback, and chose this edition for no other reason than because it is read by a woman. And the story is told mostly from a female point of view. Its entirety my fault that I didn't look far enough to realize it is SUCH a shortened version. The only positive thing I can say about it is that it would be a good introduction to Anne McCaffrey for preteen readers. And if that's your goal start with Dragonsong instead!
The narrator is terrible! She reads as if she hates the story and can't wait get it over with. The excessiivly fast paced reading got so bad I had to go into my settings and slow it down. The majority of the story is, simply, thrown away. I wasted a credit on this version! Go for the unabridged one with the male narrator. At least then the you get the whole story.

Great Story

This is one of my all-time favorite series. My main criticism is that I had to slow the narration down to .8 in order to enjoy it, otherwise it sounded as if Alvin of the Chipmunks was narrating - not a pleasant experience.
