In his newest collection of essays, David Sedaris lifts the corner of ordinary life, revealing the absurdity teeming below its surface. Critic reviews

  • Audie Award Winner, Humor and Short Stories/Collections, 2005

"In his latest collection, Sedaris has found his heart. This is not to suggest that the author of Me Talk Pretty One Day and other best-selling books has lost his edge. The 27 essays here include his best and funniest writing yet....What emerges is the deepest kind of humor, the human comedy." (Publishers Weekly)
"Sedaris is a careful writer, with a no-muss, no-fuss style that rarely misfires." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Sedaris' piquant essays are as meticulously honed and precisely timed as the best stand-up comic routines, which is, of course, what they are....Sedaris, openly gay, nervy as a tightrope walker, sharply hilarious, teasingly misanthropic yet genuinely compassionate, has a unique ability to supply exactly the right details to bring every funny, awkward, ludicrous, painful, horrible real-life moment into harrowingly crisp focus....He is mesmerizing." (Booklist)
"Sedaris has a satirical brazenness that holds up next to Mark Twain and Nathanael West." (The New Yorker)

The book that made me a forever fan

Vintage Sedaris and brilliant. Reading it is surpassed only by listening to the author's rendition.

Sedaris strikes again.

Wonderful telling of real-life stories. Poignant and amusing. His attention to detail and his sensitivity to people make for a delightful listen.

Not as funny, but definitely worth a listen

As personal as David Sedaris' writing is anyway, "Dress Your Family..." seems the most personal. The more you listen to his writing, the more it seems plausible that you could walk up to him and strike up a conversation like an old friend.

This book is not as funny as others to listen to, but it is nevertheless incredibly engaging. As many have said, this is not the "Intro to Sedaris." It's more like "Advanced Sedaris."

refreshing

This is the first of his books that I have read, and I plan to read more. A few of the stories are live recordings, and they seem to be even funnier because something is added when he has an audience. The next I read will be live. This is great for us heterosexuals who love our homosexual brothers and sisters. It brings insight into that world.... the drama and the hilarity.

David Sedaris is hysterical!!!

Once again a great, hilarious book written and beautifully read by David Sedaris. He cherry picks the best situations from his and his families lives and turns them into comedy gold!
His delivery makes them come to life.
Can't wait to read more of his books with my ears.

So funny!

I love the author's narration. If I read the book myself, it would be funny, but his cadence really makes it hilarious. I can't believe there are people aren't familiar with his work. They are missing out on a treasure.

Addictive.

There is something so engaging about the humorous warped way he views the world that make his books impossible to put down.

So who said he was a comedian?

Anyone reading these reviews would think that Sedaris is a stand-up comic whose skits hit the mark only 50% of the time, at best. Sedaris is an ESSAYIST – a person who has the capacity to see, and grab, every single bit of truth that comes at him [they come at a fast pace every day to everybody] and who is willing [despite disclosures of self that may be embarrassing] and able [this one can write!] to share those truths. A Truth can trigger any one or more of the wide range of emotions that human beings are capable of, which is why each of Sedaris’ essays may trigger Laughter, or Tears, or Introspection, or Sadness, or Embarrassment, or Pride, or Anger, or Disgust, or…..

Sedaris is the perfect narrator for his books

Possibly even more enjoyable than reading his works. His tone emphasizes the sad humor. I was upset to see the time dwindling down as the audiobook ended.
