Publisher's summary

With so much confusion about the role of men in our society, it's no wonder so many parents and teachers are at a loss about how to bring up boys. Our culture has vilified masculinity, and as a result boys are suffering. Parents, teachers, and others involved in shaping the character of boys have many questions. In Bringing Up Boys, Dr. James Dobson, America's most trusted authority on family issues, tackles these questions and offers advice and encouragement based on a firm foundation of biblical principles. Bringing Up Boys is a must-hear book for parents, teachers, social workers, youth leaders, and counselors—anyone involved in the challenge of turning boys into good men.

Great book

Having an energetic young boy, this books helped me see how wonderfully normal he is despite what others say! We have held our ground to not squash our son's beautiful spirit that will make him a successful and healthy man someday! Definitely read this book if you have a boy who began climbing the furniture as soon as he could walk!!

Thank God it’s not too late

I ordered the hard copy of this book several years ago. But never read it due to the business of life until, in a desperate moment of panic I realized as a single parent with 4 boys I was unprepared to handle this stage of their lives. Not knowing where to turn, I cried out to God. I remembered that I had Bringing Up Boys by Dr. Dobson and quickly pulled it off the shelf. But where would I find the time. I work full time to include one weekend a month, the kids and the house keep me running. But just a week ago, a dear friend of mine suggested audiobooks. What a Godsend!!! I was able to get thru this book in 4 days and I even listened to some chapters more than once. Although some of what Dr. Dobson said was painful and often frightening it was right on point and I realized that if I don’t stand up and fight for my children the results will be devastating. I believe this book is not only for parents of boys but everyone should read it. What our society has intended for our youth is heartbreaking and the enemy is coming for them full force. Parents need this information and the rest of the population can benefit greatly from what Dr. Dobson has to say about our children’s growth, how to understand, and support healthy upbringing in our youth after all, parents are not the only ones who interact with children. I’m just saying this amazing and timeless book is for everyone. Thank you Dr. Dobson and focus on the family.

Less helpful than I was hoping

He spent an inordinate amount of time on what is wrong with the world and culture. How it is leading our kids, specifically boys, astray. He isn't wrong but I didn't buy this book to learn about the negative and sinful forces out there, I bought it to learn how to better invest in my son. To help him become the man that God wants him to be. For that this book was about as helpful as a short Focus on the Family article. You will be time, and money, ahead to go read a few articles on this subject than to listen to this book. Not very practical.

Disappointing

I had high hopes for this book, as I have heard so much about it and respect Dr. Dobson. Honestly I found it extremely judgemental with no room for women who are called to a career to work. His statement that women who work are ruining their boys is frankly wrong and offensive. Women can work and be present and raise children.

Homophobic and sexist

I was hoping a for a well researched book with advice, up to date evidence and well-substantiated arguments on this important topic. Sadly, Dobson's points - whilst seemingly sound at first listen - are totally undermined by his Christian agenda. His views on homosexuality are dangerous. His book is a thinly-veiled attack on feminism and comes across as petty and altogether self-serving. I listen to all of it; most of the time with my mouth open in horror.

Great knowledgeable resource

I enjoyed learning about raising children in today's society and found myself applying this knowledge immediately in life and in my classroom.

Too "conservative" for my taste. Some good remind

Too "conservative" for my taste. Some good reminders on the differences between boys and girls, but the author gets way too much into the impacts of society and all of the problem a lesbian, to make me pay too much attention. North

This book is highly outdated

great loving message with religious, feminist truth/propaganda, Post modernists truth/propaganda. Extremely outdated, makes reference to Bill Cosby as a great father figure and WWF before they changed to WWE

Good advice

This book is full of great and practical advice. So often we think we are doing our kids a favour by giving in to certain things, when in reality we are making the wrong decision. I wish I had read this book ten years ago; however, I can still use many of these principles now in my pre-teen.
Great book that opened my eyes to so many things! Thank-you Dr. Dobson!
