Story
Cracking the communication code between husband and wife involves understanding one thing: that unconditional respect is as powerful for him as unconditional love is for her. It's the secret to marriage that every couple seeks, and yet few couples ever find. While both men and women deserve both love and respect, in the midst of conflict the driving need for a woman is love and the driving need for a man is respect. When either of these needs isn’t met, things get crazy.

Perhaps there has never been a more challenging time to raise children than in today's culture. Parents are having to address challenges that their parents never had to with them. And while the core elements to raising children are the same, parents need wisdom for applying them to this day and age. That's what this book is about: navigating the times and raising a generation of men on godly principles - sons who are ready, able, and motivated to represent God during their days of sojourning on this earth.

Why does communication between couples remain the number one marriage issue? "Because," says Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, "most spouses don’t know that they speak two different languages. They are sending each other messages in 'code,' but they won’t crack that code until they see that she listens to hear the language of love and he listens to hear the language of respect."

Do you believe your struggle with anger stems from the wrong behavior you see displayed in your children? The knee-jerk reactions and blowups you're facing are often a result of a bigger set of "triggers". Some of these are external, like a child's disobedience, back talk, or selective hearing, while others are internal, like an overflowing schedule, sleep deprivation, or perhaps your own painful experiences from childhood.

Publisher's Summary
From the New York Times best-selling author of Love & Respect comes the definitive book for mothers and sons. Love is important, but it is respect that is the key to your son’s heart.
Dads and their boys are often best buddies. But what's the key to a successful and healthy mother-son bond? Informed by relevant scripture and up-to-date psychological research, Emerson Eggerichs, Ph.D., explores this foundational relationship to show how loving and respecting your little boy can help him grow into a mature, responsible, and godly man.
The idea of moms respecting their sons may sound strange to some. It's easy to recognize that little girls need dad’s love, but who is strongly promoting the truth that little boys (and big ones) need mom's respect?
In Mothers & Sons: The Respect Effect, listeners will discover:
- Why respect matters in a mother-son relationship
- A method based on the testimonies of thousands of mothers
- Specific responses that can be given instead of how you would “normally” respond
- Practical applications, especially for parenting teen boys
Just as Emerson Eggerichs transformed millions of marital relationships with a biblical understanding of love and respect, you can apply these same principles to transform your relationship with your son.
Mother & Son is also available in Spanish, Madre e hijo.

The writing is straight to the point and applicable. I am using this teaching and the stories to build a solid foundation of respect with my 8 year old son.
Reading this book opened my perspective to life through the eyes of men and boys.

Condescending to Mother
I read 4 chapters of this book. I forced my self to continue reading it trying to look at the positive things about it, but the condescending tone to Mothers and women from the beginning and throughout the book discouraged me to finish it. The author looks down to mothers blaming them and talking as if we should’ve known what he preaches. I say preach because it’s what he does. He preaches and scolds Mothers almost in disgust. It almost sound like a personal resentment. The concept of respect is important and the reason mothers like me buy this book, to learn and improve as a parent, but not to feel like failures. I would not recommend this book nor finish reading it. Wasted money and time.

Like finding pure gold!!!!!
I am a divorced mom with a 13 year old son. He has a very kind, loving heart but we struggle daily with the respect issue, ie. getting things done when I tell him to, being honest about turning in homework, following house rules related to internet and technology. I am frustrated with our relationship and often feel like I am failing him when I tongue lash him hoping to negatively motivate him. Before reading this book I already new tongue lashing and taking away his phone or video games was not working. Now I know why. He thinks very differently because he is a male. His thinking isn't wrong, it is just different. This book has given me tools to approach him differently and I have seen great changes. I still resort to my female methods at times but just like any other habit, approaching him with respect speech is a conscious decision that is becoming a habit. I have hope that our relationship will be even stronger with these tools! I hope that as I start demonstrating respect speech to him he will seek out a mate that will not brow beat him and he will desire to respectfully love on a wife and bring her the security she will desire. Thank you so very much for writing this book. My mom raised 5 sons and she even commented on how great the content was! The narration is great as well, a very easy listen. I will play this book over and over.

a true gem
As a wife and mother of 3 sons, I am truly grateful to have found this book. I have never noticed the real need for respect in the men in my life and how easy it is to use disrespect as what I wrongfully assumed to be the only way to get the results I wanted. My sons are all still young and hopefully by starting respect talk now, I can help build any strengths and confidence I had not been encouraging before. There were so many wake up calls in this book and so may "ah-hah" moments, thank you so much for writing this book and helping myself and other women to see and hear with "blue" vision and hearing. I am not spiritual or religious, yet I still found this to be invaluable in helping me on my journey as a wife and mother, completely surrounded by males who I now know are in need of respect and honor.

Awesome; best advice to my life so far
Best advice for my life since I read Love and respect in the marriage.
I have two sons only the ages of 3 and just under 2. I have immediately started to try to decode and listen extra carefully to what they want and desire from me when they say and do certain things.
It has helped me to learn how to balance love and respect between us. Both boys are really different, the oldest is smart and very artistic and analytical and logical. And the younger is very physically strong, tender hearted and a great singer and also very understanding. And that's why(and also because they are under 4y.o.) I need to balance them because they are young and definitely still want the love and affection but I can see when they are displaying their strength, physical abilities and what they are able to do, I hear them looking for my appreciation and respect. so I often answer them like so, "Wow, I respect your patients in drawing and doing crafts, it's amazing how much time and effort you put into them to make sure you make them good."
or "It's so amazing to me that you are so strong and that you put effort into becoming stronger. I really appreciate that about you, because I can rely on you to protect me."
At this point I don't get as many chances to practice respect talk because they are toddlers. But I am so grateful that I have all this time to practice and I'm already getting so much better with my husband, so that helps in making me a pro.
I want to get extremely good at this and make sure my boys will know without a doubt that I adore and admire and respect them SOOOOOOOOO much! :)
