Publisher's Summary

A leadership and career manifesto told through the narrative of one of today’s most inspiring, admired, and successful global leaders.

In Winners Dream, Bill McDermott - the co-CEO of the world’s largest business software company, SAP - chronicles how relentless optimism, hard work, and disciplined execution embolden people and equip organizations to achieve audacious goals.

Growing up in working-class Long Island, a 16-year-old Bill traded three hourly wage jobs to buy a small deli, which he ran by instinctively applying ideas that would be the seeds for his future success. After paying for and graduating college, Bill talked his way into a job selling copiers door-to-door for Xerox, where he went on to rank number one in every sales position he held and eventually became the company’s youngest-ever corporate officer. Eventually, Bill left Xerox and in 2002 became the unlikely president of SAP’s flailing American business unit. There, he injected enthusiasm and accountability into the demoralized culture by scaling his deli, sales, and management strategies. In 2010, Bill was named co-CEO, and in May 2014 he will become SAP’s sole, and first non-European, CEO.

Colorful and fast-paced, Bill’s anecdotes contain effective takeaways: gutsy career moves; empathetic sales strategies; incentives that yield exceptional team performance; and proof of the competitive advantages of optimism and hard work. At the heart of Bill’s story is a blueprint for success and the knowledge that the real dream is the journey, not a preconceived destination.

A truly inspiring story

Listening to this book was an awesome experience. More than just hearing his Bill McDermott's story, this book inspired me as a leader. I had to constantly pause the book to write notes I really want to remember. In stark contrast to books about Jeff Bezos and the Google guys that constantly talked about the way they've build their companies by hiring people with off the charts IQ's, Bill McDermott's life has demonstrated the power of being interested in people, and inspiring them dream big dreams. By doing this he has accomplished amazing things as a leader.

I have been telling every business person I've talked to in the past couple days they've got to listen to, or read this book. There is so much wisdom that can be gleaned from the way McDermott has led, and what I loved most was his boldness to believe he could make the impossible happen (the story of taking the Xerox post in Puerto Rico).

To complete the perfect listening experience McDermott read the book himself, and did a great job. To me there's nothing better than hearing a memoir like this in their own voice, where you can hear his passion and emotions throughout the book.

A definite 5-star book all the way around!

Great Story of Passion and Persistence

Mr. McDermott's story is a great reminder to constantly dream big. He understands the most important key to success is understanding the needs of his customers . He does an excellent job of illustrating this throughout his journey starting as a paper boy to his current position.

Bill's Passion

Although not titled as a sales management book, yet it has a lot to tell about customer orientation, account management, sales management and executive management. Bill's passion about what he does feels like coming straight from his heart into his lines and your ears.

What did you love best about Winners Dream?
The author told a very personal story of growth – from corner store to corner office. His optimism shine through. The description of his sales approach and customer-centric philosophy is a must read for anyone interested in sales or serving happy customers. His leadership principles and actions are worth learning from. His strategic thinking, and articulation of Run Simple with a Purpose are admirable.
While reading the book, I often paused, re-read paragraphs, made marks, and pondered. I’m especially moved by the ending “Never forget where you came from”.

The narrating by the author himself is wonderful – authentic, confident, and full of passion.

Definitely recommended!
Wow. Lots of wisdom pulled from Bill's life.

I never expected to spend so much time taking notes and journaling based on this book, but I didn't.

Pretty sure I've annoyed my wife and friends talking about all I've pulled from this book.
