Story
On Death and Dying began as a theoretical book, an interdisciplinary study of our fear of death and our inevitable acceptance of it. It introduced the world to the now-famous five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. On Grief and Grieving applies these stages to the process of grieving and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, all based on Kübler-Ross' and Kessler's professional and personal experiences.

This audiobook does not look to offer a solution to grief. Rather, it provides supportive, useful guidance to help you create a life in which peace, and even gratitude, can coexist with your grief. There is no “right way” to grieve, and there is no right way to use this book.

Story
Peyton Salvage suffered the death of a loved one at an early age and learned that the way we approach death as a society does nothing to serve those struggling to cope with losing someone dear to them. Losing a loved one is one of the most traumatic and heartbreaking events in a person's life. And yet, as a society, we're uncomfortable with allowing people to grieve in the way most natural to them, leaving mourners feeling isolated and ashamed of their grief.

Publisher's Summary
A groundbreaking audiobook exploring the little-known yet critical connections between anxiety and grief, with practical strategies for healing, following the renowned Ka-Ross stages model.
Anxiety disorders are on the rise; many people are looking for resources to help them cope with anxiety, yet most people aren't aware that unresolved grief is a primary underpinning - or that the two are related at all. In her therapy practice and in her own life, Claire Bidwell Smith discovered the connections between anxiety and grief. Now, backed by research, case studies, and interviews, Bidwell Smith breaks down the physiology of anxiety, giving listeners a concrete foundation of understanding in order to help them heal the anxiety caused by loss.
Taking a big step beyond Elisabeth KA-Ross' widely accepted five stages, Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief explains the intimate connection between death and grief and how they specifically cause anxiety - unpacking everything from our age-old fears about mortality to the bare vulnerability a loss can make us feel.
With concrete tools and coping strategies for panic attacks, getting a handle on anxious thoughts, and more, Bidwell Smith bridges these two emotions in a way that is deeply empathetic and eminently practical.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.
Critic Reviews
"In Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief, Claire Bidwell Smith has found yet another way to powerfully illuminate and deepen our understanding of what it means to grieve. Drawing upon her personal experience with deep loss as well as her many years of working as a grief counselor, Bidwell Smith offers fresh insight into the connection between grief and anxiety. Bidwell Smith's profound compassion for those who've experienced loss has already helped so many people. This trailblazing book will help many more." (Cheryl Strayed, New York Times best-selling author of Wild)
"The world of grief - rote with repeated thoughts over what happened, what might have been, and what might be - provides the perfect breeding ground for anxiety. In pinpointing the connections between the two, Claire Bidwell Smith is the warm and wise friend guiding you toward deeper control over your thoughts, instead of your thoughts wielding control over you." (Rebecca Soffer, coauthor of Modern Loss: Candid Conversation About Grief. Beginners Welcome)

Incredibly Helpful
I lost my mom suddenly and unexpectedly last year. I've been managing my grief well enough, but my anxiety finally got to a point I had to chat with my doctor recently. She suggested I start with some self-help books on anxiety. I wasn't sure where to begin with that directive so I hopped on Audible and simply typed "Anxiety." This book miraculously popped up at the top. I was instantly intrigued and downloaded it. I'm so grateful I did because I feel like all the anxiety I've been coping with is rooted in my grief.
I listened the first time while going on long walks. I simply wanted to listen and process. That alone took my anxiety from an 8 out of 10 to a 3 out of 10. But I plan to listen again, this time slower and at a desk so I can try some of the assignments suggested by the author.
Thank you for this book. I highly recommend it to anyone coping with a significant loss.

Helpful after sudden and unexpected loss of father
Even though I don't believe the full magnatude of my grief and loss has been felt, I am hopeful that this book has equiped me with the tools to redirect my grief and anxiety into a more productive energy. I am the 37 year old son of my now deceased 68 year old father. I have always suffered from anxiety and fear of the unknown. The loss of my dad has exacerbated this anxiety. This book has been extremely helpful and I am actively using the advice contained within these pages to pick up the pieces and go out into the world and continue to live my life to the fullest. I highly recommend this book for anyone in a similar situation.
