The causes of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder range from severe neglect to monstrous abuse. Many survivors grew up in houses that were not homes-in families that were as loveless as orphanages and sometimes as dangerous. If you felt unwanted, unliked, rejected, hated, and/or despised for a lengthy portion of your childhood, trauma may be deeply engrained in your mind, soul, and body. This book is a practical guide to recovering from lingering childhood trauma. It is copiously illustrated with examples of the author's and his clients' journeys of recovering.

Every one of us sooner or later walks through hell. The hell of being hurt, the hell of hurting another. The hell of cancer, the hell of a reluctant, thunking shovel full of earth upon the casket of someone we deeply loved, the hell of betrayal, the hell of betraying, the hell of divorce, the hell of a kid in trouble...the hell of knowing that this year, like any year, may be our last. We all walk through hell. The point is not to come out empty-handed.... There is real and profound power in the suffering we endure if we transform that suffering into a more authentic, meaningful life.

Publisher's Summary
An insatiable need for sex and love. Periods of overeating or starving. A pattern of unstable and painful relationships.
Does this sound painfully familiar?
Trauma counselor Kelly McDaniel has seen these traits over and over in clients who feel trapped in cycles of harmful behaviors - and are unable to stop.
Many of us find ourselves stuck in unhealthy habits simply because we don't see a better way. With Mother Hunger, McDaniel helps women break the cycle of destructive behavior by taking a fresh look at childhood trauma and its lasting impact. In doing so, she destigmatizes the shame that comes with being under-mothered and misdiagnosed. McDaniel offers a healing path with powerful tools that include therapeutic interventions and lifestyle changes in service to healthy relationships.
The constant search for mother love can be a lifelong emotional burden, but healing begins with knowing and naming what we are missing. McDaniel is the first clinician to identify Mother Hunger, which demystifies the search for love and provides the compass that each woman needs to end the struggle with achy, lonely emptiness, and come home to herself.

Good but …
There is a lot to say about toddler trauma, but she misses as often as she hits here. It is easy to point out how an emotionally absent mother can leave you with a hunger, much harder to help people/women find constructive approaches to dealing with an early damage to the psyche.
My complaint about this book is it identifies an issue but does little work with regard to going beyond the issue to adult recovery. At one point she suggests a reiki exercise, sure it checks the woo woo box, but for exercises that help you rewire and retire your stories of childhood neglect and disinterest from caretakers it falls short.
I recommend it based on where you are—if you are just now realizing you have childhood trauma I think it would be good to hear. If you’re looking for help recovering from an unsuccessful childhood you’ll need to look further. She poses the questions well, but she is not helping you work the problem.
I updated my review downwards. It is just too bare of substance.

As a counselor specializing in addiction, I devour books with rapid speed in the never ending effort to provide new helpful paradigms for my clients. As a daughter who never had the understanding of daughter or of mother, I painstakingly agonizingly trouped through this work, and every anxiety producing moment was worth it in term of cathartic returns. A much needed book for every woman.
Your book has helped give language to parts of me that had no vocabulary for so many years. So much so that when I came across a sculpture by Chukesart of a mother holding her child in a solid embrace, I was able to identify the kind of nurturing embrace I had missed. The protection I yearned for and the guidance I so needed. Thank you Kelly. I appreciate you 🙏🏾

Revolutionary Info to start the healing journey
With 3rd degree mother hunger, I've faced many or the consequences the author outlines. My own mother is still living, but we have been no contact now for right at a year. I have 5 young children of my own, and sometimes the immense burden of my own mother hunger weighs me down. I DESPERATELY don't want to continue this cycle. I think I've had so many kids to try to fill the void and I do everything from homebirth, breastfeeding, baby wearing, bedsharing, attachment parenting, and homeschooling. attaching with my kids and loving them has been both therapeutic and at times triggering. I'm doing everything I can to heal and let them not have this issue. I'm beyond grateful to have an amazing spouse. he is truly a partner. thanks so much for this book! I recommended it to my therapist and she is also reading it.

I came across the book/author on a fb clip and immediately tried to find it but the earliest date being 10 days away. Unwillingly I downloaded it to listen to (not much an audio person having failed with a previous book).
I managed to read/listen to it in one sitting!l such an easy read with a soothing voice. In fact I re read it the following day ( I like to make notes).
Thank you for your time, effort and healing intent in writing this book. It has helped me understand a life time of pain. ❤️

Fascinating subject, poor performance
Fascinating subject and so well researched. The author definitely has great knowledge of this really complex subject. However, I struggle to listen to the the author read this book. At first I thought it might be because of language, author is American, but it’s not that, it’s the author’s intonation. Even when I turned up the volume, it was still difficult to catch some words in sentences. Have decided to read the book as it is too frustrating trying to work out what is being said. This is only reason why I couldn’t give 5* rating for every category. Most annoying!

Outstanding book, written by a beautiful soul
Love how this book is structured. It is very insightful and is written with warmth and compassion. Love that it includes lots of info on how to heal and provides information on where to get help. I feel less alone after reading this book, it focuses on trauma and addiction I’ve never understood up until now. Things I’d never want to talk about with the people in my life, as doing so could result in me feeling uncomfortable or being judged. Wish all mums would read this book because there would be far less traumatised people in the world if they did.

Healing ❤️🩹
I read Ready to Heal a few years ago and I was blown away with the level of awareness it provided me. Readings Mother Hunger now after being on this healing path for a while (path that is not straight forward at all, yet a necessary one for me as I choose to be able to nurture a healthy relationship with myself and others). I talked about the concepts in this book with my therapist and that also added to the healing potion. Thank you so much Kelly McDaniel, for this beautiful gift of wisdom and hope.

Possibly the most important book I'll ever read.
So many revelations in understanding myself in relation to my mother. So many lightbulb moments and so many tears of grief and recognition. A gently read, powerful punch of a book that encourages you to heal whilst listening to it. Kelly's caring and respectful reading manner is beautifully supportive. I felt the sound dipped in and out especially earlier in the book. I could recommend this book to every woman I know and they would all take something from it. Thank you Kelly for explaining mother hunger.

I could see my own trauma through this book but also that I’d passed this on to my daughters. One of my daughters is also reading this book and I’m hoping we can heal and move forward together.
Very well written and read

Excellent book, terrible recording
The ideas in this book are revolutionary for me. I hugely appreciate the work of the author and have bought this in print too.
However, this recording is not up to the usual audible standard. Background noise distracting at times. Over-the-top softly softly American accent as if she's trying to send you to sleep. Hearing extraneous noise makes me wonder where it was recorded.
Disappointed as the normal Audible quality is excellent.

Blessings Love and Light ✨
This book opened the gate to the very place I did not realise I needed healing the most.
Now I understand where my healing was taking me.
It it very important to take Kelly's advice and take breaks and be kind and gentle with yourself throughout this book.
Thank you Kelly McDaniel for your guiding light and writing this incredible book.
Your work is what my ancestors were pushing me towards and I am so grateful.
Bless you and every Daughter and Mother past present and future🙏🏽🌌✨

Not for me:
I felt very uncomfortable reading this book and as a mental health practitioner was quite concerned around the underlining or potential homophobia ideologies of what a “perfect” family looks like. I also have functioning wonderful, productive friends that were raised within a loving male same-sex family. And then I know people that were raised bye their biological parents that are completely dysfunctional. Admittedly I did rush through this book after the first chapter due to how uncomfortable I felt. Important note is I wanted to read it because of my own childhood experiences with a distant mother where I felt like an inconvenience. This book is not for me and doesn’t align with my professional mental health practice:

Not sure about this one
I'm not sure about this one. I listened to the end hoping there would be something I could take away from this that I didn't already know. I'm not sure if it is her voice or the content but as a Mum, I found that she was speaking more from her own wounds than from a general topic that people could benefit from.
Maybe I will listen to it again later to see if I can taken something from it.

I wish I had more words
Hard-hitting and close to home, this incredible listen is both well written and read aloud.
Incredibly touching and insightful, I also thoroughly enjoyed the science and psychology behind why - as someone with 'mother hunger' - we may feel the way we do.
A truly life-changing read.

Life Changing
This book help me to understand trauma I had no name for. It’s given me direction in my healing and plenty of other resources and healing tips. Before this my healing was just hopeless stumbling. She has a calming and reassuring voice and if someone suggests not to listen because they don’t like the voice over ignore it. The message is far too important if you you do truly desire peace and respite from your suffering. Cannot recommend it highly enough to both people who are suffering with this type of trauma or to those who want to become mothers. Thank you so much Kelly for sharing your wisdom and insight. 🙏🙏🙏

Good book, shame about the reading & editing.
Unfortunately it seems that the reader has recorded this in several different places, perhaps with different equipment each time, & the audio swings from so soft you can’t hear what she’s saying to suddenly so loud you nearly crash your car. It is edited so poorly that many times several words or even whole sentences are repeated, making it hard to follow as you loose track of the meaning of the author. It really needs to be re-recorded or edited by a professional. It’s not worth paying for like this.

Eye opening. Triggering but like all healing you have to rip the bandaid off. Can’t seem to find the PDF attachment?

Story
Why do women keep themselves small and quiet? Why do they hold back professionally and personally? What fuels the uncertainty and lack of confidence so many women often feel? In this paradigm-shifting book, leading feminist thinker Bethany Webster identifies the source of women’s trauma. She calls it the Mother Wound - the systemic disenfranchisement of women by the patriarchy - and reveals how this cycle is perpetuated by wounded mothers who unconsciously pass on damaging beliefs and behaviors to their daughters.
