A Lost Princess and the Swashbuckling Game of a Lifetime

Cari Dix didn't know her whole life was a lie; she only knew she didn't belong here. Growing up with the most ordinary parents ever, all Cari wanted was a life of adventure and a little bit of fun.

When she discovers an old, restored computer from her father's past, Cari stumbles into a fantasy game world she'd always thought a part of her childhood imagination. Taking her combat fencing skills with her, she sets out to explore a world her parents said didn't exist.

Come along and play the game. Join Cari in this swashbuckling LitRPG adventure, returning to the world of Fantasma once again. This is the first book in a brand-new fantasy trilogy picking up where the Accidental Traveler series left off.

Play along with Cari as she fights to save the last of the empire's heirs and carries on the legend her father left behind.

Yup she's a late teen for sure.

A great book and I look forward to more books from this series. She very much has a problem with "boys" and "men" and their not taking her serious or as a threat. She learned a lot in this book and I am excited to see her as a raider.

Accidental Fan

A solid follow-up to The Traveler triliogy. I admit listening to the sample made me question about making the purchase. After all, what do I know of spoiled teen age girls? Yet I trust Jamie Davis as an author and his willingness to freely interact with me via email made me click the purchase button.

I would have missed out if I had not listened to yet another incredible work by Jamie Davis! His story writing and character development is super. He writes with humor, excitement, tension and gives me the desire to keep listening. If this were a paper book, I'd not want to wait to turn the page to see what happens next.

This is the first to hear Stacie Gonzalez and her work was fantastic. Her portrayl of each character was very good and by her voice, I have a picture of each character in my mind. She used inflection, timing including pauses and stressed words to create a vivid world.

I am eagerly waiting the next in The Champion series.

Save the Empire, once more!

Cari Dix, daughter of Hal and Mona Dix was two years old when Hal and Mona left Fantasma for good. That exit was the ending of the Accidental Traveler Trilogy. While not required, it would be beneficial considering all the references to Hal Dix and his exploits during that series. Cari’s first encounter with the Duke of Cairn resulted in the Duke’s broken nose. She was just the instrument of some long-delayed justice. There was so much justice to be dispensed after all, and Cari decided she was just the person to serve it! The Empress will not live forever. It is a time of great uncertainty, and Cari Dix has come to Fantasma. The opening volume of the series is nowhere near as overly insecure, female empowerment, chauvinistic, gaslighting, sexism, and false moral quandaries as some reviewers profess. Yes, Cari Dix is a stubborn, strong-willed woman, with a reoccurring bad attitude, and an occasionally irritating presence, but a head case? I think not. All-in-all a good tale!

Better than Dueling Banjo's!

Ok, so we return to the land of Fantasma for another round of who will I be this time. Only not. This time it is Kari Dix who has the spotlight, and she really takes the mantle her father laid down, and runs off into the night with it. I have to admit that I was initially skeptical of someone stepping into the hero role that Hal created, but I can see that Davis and his son have really thought this one out. Kari, and accomplished fencer has been told that her memories of Fantasma are all false, and that she was basically delusional, until the Empress sends out a call for her hero to return, and Kari is inadvertently pulled into her “imaginary” world. Upon her entry she opts to become a duelist, surprise surprise, but there were a few other choices she could have made that were pretty intriguing such as a paladin. Within about ten minutes of her arrival she manages to run afoul of some men who work for the Duke, y’know the guy who is after the Empress’s throne, and is challenged to a duel. Well, as you guess it bad things happen and she ends up on the lam. The book is then devoted to her reluctantly trying to protect the last grandchild of the ailing Empress.

What is really nice about this book is that it actually breaks the format of the old series. As much as I loved Hal, it was a touch repetitive in the last book. It had become a sort of wash, rinse, repeat sort of thing with him basically restarting with a different class each time he entered Fantasma. Each book also had Hal returning back home after each of his adventures had concluded. Not here, from the way it looks it seems that Kari is going to stay in Fantasma for a while. And that, my friends, was perhaps the most refreshing part. Ninety percent of the books out there always have the main character trying to make their way back home the minute they find themselves stuck in a game they love to play. Alright, 90% is a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point. Kari is actually reluctant to go home, and shows little to no interest in doing so. SO, I can’t go into more detail but suffice it to say the book does not end like the other books do. Also, it sort of looks like Kari will be remaining a Duelist for a while longer. Additionally, it looks like Hal, and possibly his wife might be returning to Fantasma as well. Hmmm, maybe one of them will become a cool paladin! We’ll see.
Now, one change that I am not doing cartwheels over is that Roberto Scarlato didn’t return for this series. It is a real shame because I am a huge fan of his, and he was sorely missed. Although, from talking to Jamie and C.J. at the Dover Comic Con this year (where I got this totally awesome signed book, MY FIRST SIGNED book!) they told me that Roberto will be narrating his Extreme Medical Services series, in which a Paramedic helps humans and monsters alike. It isn’t LITRPG, but it is something I will be getting. But I digress. As I was saying, Scarlato isn’t returning because Stacy Gonzalez has taken over the accidental champion reigns, and is now leading the team with her vocal charms. She is new to me, but she seems to handle things fairly well. Now, I’m not going to lie. She does do voices, but her male impersonations are not as strong as they could be. There were a few times that I had to wonder who was speaking, and I almost wondered if they were female or not. But it isn’t like that with all of her male voices, just some. I chalk that up as a rookie thing, I think that this is only her 6th book that she has narrated, so I can cut her some slack. From what I’ve heard, once she gets her footing, she is going to become a really great narrator. She does this series some serious justice, and that is really all that matters.

The book is fun and is family friendly, if you don’t mind some killing every now and then. Kari, as much as I resisted her replacing Hal, I think that she has some real depth, and brings a new perspective to Fantasma that I really enjoyed. I have to say that I like the new format of the stories, so it isn’t a one and done kind of deal anymore, and that I have seen some serious improvements over all, there are a lot of changes to Fantasma, and it doesn’t feel like a “The Emporer is evil and oppressive” kind of tale. There is a lot more going on, and things are not so straight forward. Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. Getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Don't listen to the chauvinistic reviews.

It wasn't like those negative reviews are saying, it elude to some men being demeaning but not all men. The negative reviews are completely unjust.

Too much women empowerment not enough story.

Could have been a good book but the author decided to turn into a women empower story.

Should have just let there be a strong female character who overcame great challenges. This story has too many outdate stereotypes and filled with social injustice complaining. I wanted to be entertained not lectured throughout the story.

Could have been good, like Accidental Traveler.

This had the potential to be as good as the Accidental Traveler. Maybe even better as it is the daughter, who was a very young child the last time she experienced this world. Instead Kerri is a petulant little "woman" DON'T call her a girl. She will go into paroxisms of rage at any MAN who might say, think, imply, insinuate or any other form of communication that says she's attractive or maybe not able to do anything a man could. I've raised 2 daughters into adults and trained them to do anything they set their minds to....but, to fully understand that they can't lift a 300 pound anything off the ground without assistance and that they can't stand toe to toe with a 6'4" 250 man and trade blows! They will loose 99 times out of 100, and even with significant training its 50/50 at best. That said, a little ingenuity and creativity have allowed my girls to surpass and frustrate their male peers more often than not. It's 100% possible but they don't groan, growl and throw tantrums every time they are faced with even the slightest, even unconscious courtesy driven, sexist type thinking. The story is good, just blank your mind for the feminist movement style tantrums, then listen on.

Now, the narrator, she has pauses where there aren't any, reads the character stat. sheets in 3 different styles, that I can remember. Doesn't differentiate between characters well and reads all male characters like they're pre-pubescent boys seeking approval from their mothers. The narration in Accidental Traveler was very good. He did ALL of his Female and Male characters very well, doing justice to all. I believe he would have excelled in this series as well.

I really do like the story and will continue with the series.
As a grow man, don't hate on me because I tried to open a door for you or asked you if I could help lifting that. It's just common courtesy driven into me by MY MOTHER who climbed to the top of both the financial and medical fields, without any tantrums. A strong mind will overcome a weak one 99 out 100 times.
