The premise of Trauma and the Body is that, by adding body-oriented interventions to their repertoire, traditionally trained therapists can increase the depth and efficacy of their clinical work. Sensorimotor psychotherapy is an approach that builds on traditional psychotherapeutic understanding but includes the body as central in the therapeutic field of awareness, using observational skills, theories, and interventions not usually practiced in psychodynamic psychotherapy.

You don't need a book to tell you this much: Sometimes things fall apart, crack open, and miss the mark. You can plan and strategize and keep your eye on the horizon, watching for trouble. And nothing you can do will protect you from the fact that things might, when you least expect it, go terribly, horribly wrong. If you're anxious about this, it's not like you don't have a reason. If you're very anxious about this, you're certainly not alone.

Story
Acceptance and commitment therapy, or ACT, is an evolving psychotherapeutic method, first developed into a complete system in the book Acceptance and Commitment Therapy by Steven Hayes, Kirk Strosahl, and Kelly Wilson. ACT is what some call the third wave of behavioral therapy. For understanding what this means, it helps to know that the first wave applies to conventional behavioral therapy, which aims to substitute negative habits with positive behaviors through a learning principle called conditioning.

The concepts and interventions introduced in this book are designed as an adjunct to, and in support of, other methods of treatment rather than as a stand-alone treatment or manualized approach. By drawing on the therapeutic relationship and adjusting interventions to the particular needs of each client, thoughtful attention to what is being spoken beneath the words through the body can heighten the intimacy of the therapist/client journey and help change take place more easily in the hidden recesses of the self.

How can applied behavior analysis improve social and learning skills? It is a systematic manipulation of behavioral concepts to change behavior at any moment during a child's day. Many ABA methods require teaching, which is driven in a highly structured manner by parents, while others use the innate desires of the learner to obey his or her initiations.

Publisher's Summary
The pioneering originator of ACT teaches us the core principles and methods of this innovative, evidence-based model of life transformation.
Have you ever tried to "think” your way out of emotional turmoil - and ended up feeling even worse? Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) emerges from a remarkable insight: that when our normal problem-solving skills are applied to painful thoughts or feelings, suffering often increases.
Dr. Steven C. Hayes, ACT's originator and codeveloper, has found this to be true in almost every area of life's struggles. "Fortunately," he begins, "we have discovered why this is, and we have developed ways of correcting it."
For more than 30 years, ACT has been used effectively to treat not only mental and behavioral health problems such as anxiety and depression, but to help support workplace success, sports performance, weight loss, and social change. ACT works by helping us to accept and learn from our emotions, to think more freely and flexibly, and to find a liberating new perspective that allows us to take action based on what matters most to us.
Here, you will join this pioneering researcher to learn firsthand about the essentials of ACT. If you're seeking to improve your life, these sessions offer an immersive way to understand this demonstrated path to greater happiness and well-being.

insightful yes, but cant get through it.
Struggled to finish, infact I didn't finish. I threw the towel in, after the "2nd session". Steven Hayes is incredibly bland at reciting his work, he sounds like he himself is struggling to get out his own material. I even put the speed to 1.10 and it was still difficult to get through.

Useful to me
What did you like about the book? The subject matter, the practical exercises, and the conversational style in which Dr. Hayes presented the material. Whom would I recommend this book to? Anyone wanting to expand their toolkit to better understand themselves and live a more fulfilling life. Why did I choose this rating? I found the subject matter extremely useful and helpful. Dr. Hayes gave great explanations of ACT, how and why to put it into practice, and a thorough explanation of how to continue developing the skills after concluding the course and where to find additional resources. The course is a great gift to humanity. His style in presenting the material was down to earth, very accessible. I didn’t feel lectured to but rather felt his sincere wish to help and provide useful information.

Beautiful and potentially life-changing
Steven C Hayes has the most amazing voice, hr sounds so empathetic and soothing, I was thrilled to find this, especially after "The Liberated Mind" was narrated by someone else (who was actually really good, but just didn't quite have Dr Hayes's unique expressiveness). So it was a real treat to find this online course available on Audible and it's an absolute pleasure to listen to. Highly recommended for anyone seeking freedom from suffering.
