Publisher's summary

Learn inner nurturing and end emotional eating.

If you regularly eat when you're not truly hungry, choose unhealthy comfort foods, or eat beyond fullness, something is out of balance. Recent advances in brain science have uncovered the crucial role that our early social and emotional environment plays in the development of imbalanced eating patterns. When we do not receive consistent and sufficient emotional nurturance during our early years, we are at greater risk of seeking it from external sources, such as food. Despite logical arguments, we have difficulty modifying our behavior because we are under the influence of an emotionally dominant part of the brain.

The good news is that the brain can be rewired for optimal emotional health. When Food Is Comfort presents a breakthrough mindfulness practice called inner nurturing, a comprehensive, step-by-step program developed by an author who was herself an emotional eater. You'll learn how to nurture yourself with the loving kindness you crave and handle stressors more easily so you can stop turning to food for comfort. Improved health and self-esteem, more energy, and weight loss will naturally follow.

Life changing

This book is life changing. The best part was hearing examples of wayward thinking that sound exactly like own thoughts followed up with advice on how to reroute them. Definitely going to listen again.

A must read/listen

I have read a lot of books on the subject of overeating/ eating disorders. This one is different and very impactful. Other methods have not helped me, but this one (while it’s still early) has shifted something in me. I got the audio and now will reread in book format, because there’s so much to take in here. Highly recommended for anyone who struggles with eating and has plenty of other issues to top it off.

explain it like I'm in kindergarten

My therapist told me I needed to practice reparenting and self nurturing to deal with my emotional eating. Except she didn't give me any step-by-step instructions on how to do such a thing. This book is great because it does give you those step-by-step instructions. Sometimes it feels a little over explained, but really, let's face it, I need that. And e things she says to do are simple and effective.

Read this after another night of emotional eating and was immediately captivated by how informative and spot on it was. I wish I would have read this 20 years ago.

Instantly Helpful

Hearing so many of my impulses and experiences outloud had an impact on my compulsion within days. It is early, but the last week has been the easiest week Ive had in my lifetime "contolling," my compulsion. I say so in quotes, because I really didn't have to contol much. For the 1st time ever, the compulsion was just not there nearly as frequently. I have true hope for the first time in decades.

Lessons every one should learn. Skills we are rarely taught. Plan on listening again and again.

Reach enlightenment, and you'll stop overeating.

The info is not bad but A. it was really boring for me, and B. You basically need to practice tons of mindfulness to follow through on this book. People who overeat or binge, oftentimes are well aware of their emotions, sensations and the mistake their about to make, yet make it anyway. About "self nurturing" - It's so much work that it's also self-torturing. I guess for some it can be a good path.
