Publisher's Summary

They came to Earth - Pestilence, War, Famine, Death - four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to Earth, and they came to end us all.

The day Jerusalem falls, Miriam Elmahdy knows her life is over. Houses are burning, the streets run red with blood, and a traitorous army is massacring every last resident. There is no surviving this, especially not once Miriam catches the eye of War himself. But when the massive and terrifying horseman corners Miriam, he calls her his wife, and instead of killing her, he takes her back to his camp.

Now, Miriam faces a terrifying future, one where she watches her world burn town by town, and the one man responsible for it all is her seemingly indestructible “husband”. But there’s another side to him, one that’s gentle and loving and dead set on winning her over, and she might not be strong enough to resist.

However, if there’s one thing Miriam has learned, it’s that love and war cannot coexist. And so, she must make the ultimate choice: surrender to War and watch humankind fall or sacrifice everything and stop him.

ehhhhhh

I love, love, loved the 1st book to start this series. 2nd book not so much. All of sudden did the narrator (whom I usually enjoy) develop a lisp, very distracting

Admittedly, I’m only part-way into the book. However, the narration sounds really murky, like it was recorded with a bad microphone. I’m confused, because it’s the same narrator that did the last book, and this wasn’t an issue. I don’t know if audible could run the file through some sort of software to clean it up, but it’s a shame to have something distract from the hard work of such a magnificent author and narrator. I probably listened to Pestilence 3-4 times, and am sure this story will be just as amazing. =) But, a better audio-file would really facilitate the immersive experience in regard to listening to the story.

Blah narration

I listened to Pestilence and then started War immediately after. I ended up stopping halfway through and just bringing it up on Kindle to read. Pestilence takes place in North America, so basic, bland accents are fine. War takes place in the Middle East, beginning in Jerusalem. The narrator reads this in the exact same tone and voice for the two main characters - War and Miriam - as she did for Pestilence and Sara. No variation, to the point of where I forgot which story I was listening to. She gave the faux Angelic speech (author said it was Ancient Egyptian?) a good, ol' college try but there was no rise and fall or enunciation. Unless you're going to the extra effort to create your own language - like Dothraki - just don't. Overall good story, though.

Soooooo Goooood!!!

War is probably one of the best books I have ever read. I read Pestilence and loved it. I love all the Laura Thalassa books, but this one is probably my favorite. You want to hate War just like Myriam does but then you see his softer side and you can't help but fall in love with him too and his love for Myriam. I couldn't stop listening. Finished in two days. The love story is phenomenal and the chemistry is amazing!! I can't wait to read the next one. I agree that Susannah Jones voice has changed a bit, but she's still my all time favorite narrator. She just brings it to life like no other.

the narrator is supposed to be from Jerusalem...

I really enjoyed the first book and I did enjoy the second book but I will say there is a huge flaw with this particular book. Not once did I ever feel that Miriam was a woman from New Palestine or Jerusalem. The entire time, the narrator sounded like an American. It felt so inauthentic to me the entire time I was reading this book. The Story itself was good but it was so hard to get past the fact that everything felt so inauthentic. I hope the author takes that into account and fixes this issue for the rest of the series. Otherwise, I don't know if I could actually read them.

Narrator is Great

Almost identical to the first book in every way. Exact same character arcs, plot devices, and themes. Only difference was the names. Still a decent story, but it's a rinse and repeat of the last one.

Good but not great

The romance felt lazily crafted. I didn’t like how War immediately sensed a connection with Miriam and their love was built from there. He knew nothing about her and yet almost from the start she was exempt from his rules or anger. Felt sloppy.

I have read this book before and in preparation for the last part coming shortly I revisited.
Loved the story and the characters. I will be gutted when the series ends.

Beware of the lisp

Haven’t finished listening to this yet but I doubt I will. The narrator has a lisp which just takes you out of the story every few minutes.

Amazingly good! Totally worth it.

OMG! What a book. It is heavy...sad, tragic and emotional, lovely and it even has a some humor a few times. War is brutal, tragic, nonsensical and gruesome, but the hope and love overrules the desperation and tragedy. Susannah Jones is AMAZING as always and she makes this book come to life beautiful through her narration.

Far too similar to the first book in the series

I enjoyed the first book in the series (Pestilence) and eagerly bought this one. However, the story and the characters in the two books are almost identical: Pestilence and War are almost interchangeable and the two female leads are so similar in character and speech that they may as well be the same. The actual storyline is also almost identical - right down to the ending.

The basic storyline of this book repeats over and over again. War captures Miriam; she is horrified by his murderous ways; tries to escape; is re-captured easily and forgives him for killing an entire city because dang he's hot; he murders another entire city so her conscious rears up and so she tried to escape again; is caught again; dang he's hot so she forgives him again. By the time this had repeated about four times I was only half way though the book. I'm afraid at that point I gave up, switched to kindle and flick read the last half. Glad that I didn't waste any more hours of my life listening to the second half of the audible book. I won't be continuing with this series.

Absolutely love the series so far

Why to say? These are just a bit different, not the same old same old. Interesting plots, enough smut but not so much it borders on porn.. I’ll be honest, theses have actually been captivating enough to keep me awake listening into the wee hours (only one other author has managed that before)

A banging 10/10 for me. I’ve bought the lot, can’t wait for the final one

Blood thirsty, violent and emotional.

Yet again the narrator did an amazing job on this, I really enjoyed book 2. At first I didn't think I would enjoy this one as much as it's predecessor, I was wrong. War is every bit as interesting and memorable as pestilence, the storyline starts of good and gets even better as it goes on. The characters are all well written, each has their own unique personalities. The description of the world is very good, and accurate for this type of story. I felt a great deal of sympathy for Miriam, everything she has to endure in this tugs on your emotions.

Spoiler alert but war gets his girl. I loved this book. Both stories in the series have been amazing up to this point. Moving swiftly on to book 3- famine. Very excited over here.

It just gets better

I loved listening Pestilence then along comes War and steals the limelight from Pestilence.
Miriam has to come to terms when War tells her she was sent to him to be his wife. She is so defiant she’s having none of this nonsense and at every turn she defies him he tells her he knew she was going to be trouble from the start. Loved the way the story built making me want more and I sat up all night listening. I’m going to start Famine now and can’t wait to listen to Death when it’s released.

Oh my lord

This series about the four horsemen, and Laura as a writer, are quickly becoming my favorite of all time. I could write an essay about the why's and how's, but I'll just narrow it down for ya; buy it. It will be worth your time to listen to this gem of a book.

Love versus War

The story progresses, captivating and descriptive. The story to me was not quite as good as the first but well worth listening to, the narrator was excellent, again it was like she was there, not just reading.
