Publisher's Summary

Help a family member or save a stranger? In Whispering Pines, Halloween horrors involve more than goblins and ghouls.

With only a smattering of tourists visiting the village for the Samhain feast, Jayne is excited. No. She's looking forward to... no. Jayne is guardedly optimistic about spending a few days with her demanding sister. Then, a boy goes missing during trick-or-treating, and everything changes. The parents aren’t worried. Their son does this, they say.

With a storm bearing down on the village, however, Jayne isn’t content to dismiss this as a case of a curious kid off exploring the woods. Organizing a search-and-rescue mission gives her plenty to deal with, but then the word "kidnapped" is mentioned and brings her sister’s long-buried nightmare into the light, forcing Jayne to divide her attention at the worst possible time.

Kidnapping in Whispering Pines

Veiled Secrets by Shawn McGuire pulled me in immediately. I really like the character of Sheriff Jayne O'Shay, her boyfriend Tripp, and Westie Meeka. The village of Whispering Pines is full of vibrant imagery and unique characters. I can picture so many details in my mind. The Pine Time Bed and Breakfast sounds like the ideal place to visit. This book is both a standalone listen and part of a series. Sandra Murphy is magical bringing the characters to life with her voice. She inflects the right emotions and gives the characters distinguishable voices. Her ability to span a variety of ages, dialects and genders is incredible. Without giving away spoilers, I hadn't expected the kidnapper to be who it was. Well done. I loved it!

A particularly moving installment in the series...

Veiled Secrets is the sixth book in this intriguing mystery series featuring Jayne O'Shea, the sheriff of the eccentric town of Whispering Pines. Although the author gives plenty of background to read this as a standalone, the entire series builds around Jayne's experiences as she learns more about the history of the town, it's inhabitants and herself. I found this book to be the most moving of the series, and I struggled to not feel sad by the end. Jayne investigates the disappearance of a teenage boy and a subsequent death while celebrating the Samhain Holiday, known as Halloween to non-Wiccans. With several suspicious guests at the inn, disharmony between the missing boy's parents, and few clues to follow, Jayne painstakingly investigates with the help of her service dog Meeka, her boyfriend Tripp, and her fellow Whispering Pines residents. When Jayne finally figures out exactly what has been happening, I was both shocked and saddened by the outcome. I am still reeling from the feeling that events could spiral out of control so quickly and disastrously and by a betrayal that I never saw coming. Thankfully, Jayne's growing closeness with Tripp and her reconnecting with her sister throughout the book kept me from becoming too focused on the sadness inherent in the story. I am anxiously awaiting the release of the next audiobook in this addictive series.

Sandra Murphy narrates all the books in the Whispering Pines Series, and I can't imagine a better choice for Jayne's tough yet caring personality. Murphy differentiates perfectly between characters, and her performance is flawless. I especially enjoy how she adds just the right emphasis and change in tone to make the slightly spookier aspects of the story all the more thrilling. I highly recommend any story narrated by this talented artist, and the Whispering Pines series is the perfect place to start enjoying her performances.

I received a copy of this audiobook at my request in exchange for this honest review.

Secrets & Kidnapping

In this we Have trick or treaters and a boy is kidnapped. Parents say that is usual for him. For Jayne it is not then kidnapped is said, and nightmares of Jayne come, a good conclusion to this series. Given audio which the narration added to this. For my voluntary review and my honest opinion

Don't keep this book a secret

I really enjoyed this book and definitely did not see the end coming. Talk about a twist in the series. I have listened to book five and now book six and think it is a series that I will have to get the rest of the books, the books are stand alone but I have enjoyed them so much that I will have to start at the beginning. The characters are likable and I like the small town community that is describe so well that you have no problem picturing. The mystery is good with a number of suspects that kept me guessing and hooked until the end.
Jayne with the tourist season slowing down she is looking forward to spending more time to reconnect with her sister but before that can happen a young boy staying at the bed and breakfast goes missing. His parent's are convinced that he is fine and as a wilderness expect refuse to set off an alarm. It is only after a number of hours and the threat of a storm that they allow Jayne to set up a search and rescue team. The father refuses Jayne's advice and goes it alone and it is not long before he misses a check in and the rest of the town start looking for two missing people. The storm isn't the only threat in Whispering Pines, bad fairies are running around the village, not to mention the scarecrow that is wearing the missing boys t-shirt. Jayne knows it is a bad case for her to be investigating especially with her sister visiting but Jayne has no choice lives are at stake and she can't make time for her until the missing is found. Then a body is found and things get a lot worse. Can Jayne find the missing , time for her sister and other guest's at the B&B?
I like Sandra Murphy as the narrator and think she goes along to making this great series even better. I would recommend this book and any book read by Sandra Murphy because if Sandra is reading it you know it is going to be good.
