Story
When a series of devastating terror attacks brought down the United States, Conor and Barb assumed they were safe in their compound. They had everything they needed. They were armed and highly trained. But then, Barb was kidnapped. The kidnappers didn’t know why Conor was known as The Mad Mick. They didn’t know the fear and respect his name invoked in the shadowy underworld of covert operations. They didn’t know that when it came to protecting his family, he was without conscience, without compassion, and without equal. But they would soon find out.

Story
In the wake of the cataclysmic events that reshaped our world in 2020, a sense of relief washed over us all. By late 2023, I think we were ready to just live life again. I know I was. It was a time to make new friends and put the past to rest. Rayne and I hadn’t known each other long, but we were building a solid friendship, nothing more. It was our common interests that sent us on vacation together to my remote cabin. What we didn’t, couldn’t know, was that we were on a collision course with the end of the world as we knew it.

It was just a random mutation - one of a billion that happen in viruses every day. But this one was different. It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Quarantine sites disintegrated. Cities started to collapse.

Story
Years after the outbreak of a mysterious pandemic, hardly any survivors are left in the quarantined wasteland of North America. Hunger and the menace of man-eaters are nothing compared to the ferals–those who were infected and mutated by the virus. The ferals have an unquenchable need to hunt and kill, and even a single bite will quickly transform human into a rabid beast. Two survivors, the pregnant Megan and her brother David, leave a deserted colony to seek a safer haven.

Publisher's summary
From the author of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot and the Invasion trilogy.
From the War on Terror, a world crippling bioweapon is released. The US scrambles teams of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control. America's top field agents are tasked with collecting samples and developing a cure. In a national laboratory, scientists race against the clock searching for a cure. Borders are closed, martial law and soldiers deployed across the homeland.
Thus begins the greatest outbreak in the history of humankind; a disease so deadly it pushes humanity to the brink of extinction. Entire populations and regions of the US quickly wiped out, millions falling victim to the primal virus. In the wake of the fast-spreading pandemic, state and local governments, desperate for answers, rush to provide relief to the devastated and overwhelmed communities. Experts in biomedical research are desperately summoned to Atlanta and military facilities across the country.
On a cold morning, the men of India Company, Second Platoon, are alerted and rapid-deployed to Virginia. Their mission: to recover and escort experts in biomedicine, specifically in the development and production of vaccines. With faulty intelligence and half-truths, Second Platoon moves forward. What they find is worse than anyone could have predicted. What was a rescue mission turns into a struggle for their own survival.
Author's note: Torment is a story I first began writing in 2014 shortly after WTF 5: Something to Fight For was completed. I wanted to tell the story of how things unfolded back in the States and have it be a stand-alone work from the rest of the series. Because of the popularity of the primary story line, I kept shelving Torment and driving on with the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot primary band of characters. But then came the Invasion trilogy, and then Donovan's War. Torment fell further and further down the to-do list.
Eventually, I adapted some of the early chapters of Torment into a short story and released it with Amazon Publishing's Kindle Worlds under the title Battle for Orchard Hill. That was a decision I immediately regretted because I knew then the story may never be completed. Then something happened, Kindle Worlds is gone, and with that, those chapters went back to the bench.
That motivated me to get back into the original manuscript and finish Torment, a story I always enjoyed and thought needed to be told. Torment is not a rewrite of the Kindle Worlds novella Battle for Orchard Hill. Torment is the original imagining and telling of that story the way I always intended it to be.
As always, thank you for listening, and I hope you enjoy.

The Superpox-99 virus has wiped out nearly the entire human race. Governments have collapsed. Cities have become graveyards filled with unspeakable horror. People have resorted to scavenging from the dead, or taking from the living. The entire industrialized world has become a wasteland of abandoned cars, decaying bodies, and feral animals. To stay alive, U.S. Deputy Marshal Mason Raines must forage for food, water, and gasoline while outgunning those who seek to take advantage of the apocalyptic anarchy. Together with his giant Irish wolfhound, Bowie, he aligns with survivors of the town of Boone in a life and death struggle against a gang of violent criminals. With each deadly encounter, Mason is force to accept his place as one of the nation's few remaining lawmen. In a world now populated by escaped convicts, paranoid mutants, and government hit squads, his only hope to save the townspeople is to enforce his own brand of frontier justice.

Great book
I love military books, and this one is no different. The sense of foreboding and suspense comes over you when you listen to this high action thriller. Torment, a post-apocalyptic book, will have you sitting on the edge of your chair and staying up in bed to listen to what comes next.

Military Comoradory in a Zombie Apoc.
I am not usually a fan of Military drama but I really enjoyed the perspective of these well fleshed out characters as the zombie apoc. unfolds.
I gave full stars for the author because I was engaged for the whole book and mad when I realized the trip was over. I gave full stars to the narrator because each character had ideocyncrasies that could be heard and in a rapid fire way NEEDED to be heard.
I was given this free and have voluntarily left this review. I am now a fan, Thank You :)

Good story wish it was longer. I
One caveat, Little creek Amphibious Base is in Norfolk/Virginia Beach not Richmond. Can't wait for the next story.

another good military read
I enjoy reading military stories when the author obviously knows the 'language's as WJ does. Nothing ruins a gread read than finding large mistakes in terms etc. waiting to read more of his books with great eagerness.
