It's Peretti's ultimate monster story. And this time, the monster is real. Miles away from the hectic city, Reed and Rebecca hike into the beautiful Northwestern woods. They're surrounded by gorgeous mountains, waterfalls, and hundreds of acres of unspoiled wilderness. But something - or someone - begins closing in on them. Something no human has ever seen. And it's killing everyone in its path without remorse.

Story
This book is the haunting true story of pain Frank Peretti never forgot but never, until recently, shared with the world. It's the story of growing up with a medical condition that left him disfigured. A series of surgeries and the slow miracle of answered prayer took care of the deformity, but not the underdeveloped frame or the excruciating reality of being different. And it was for these petty "crimes" that Peretti was prosecuted every day at school - especially in gym class, but also in the halls, on the school grounds, even in his own neighborhood.

great
This is a great book well worth a listen. The only problem I have is with the narrator. I think he only narrates the abridged version of a couple of his books. IMHO Peretti is as good a narrator as he is an author and I wish he would narrate all of his books unabridged. I would also like to see the Cooper Kids Adventures (narrated by Peretti) published someday!

Frank E. Peretti is one talented individual
If you could sum up This Present Darkness in three words, what would they be?
Entertaining, captivating, thrilling
Who was your favorite character and why?
Sad to say but my favorite character was Rafar Prince of Babylon. Frank does his voice so well. When he speaks you listen.
What does Frank E. Peretti bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Each characters voice is well executed. I would run at night while listening to this book, and there were times I was frightened.
If you could take any character from This Present Darkness out to dinner, who would it be and why?
Marshall Hogan. Because that man leads an interesting life.
Any additional comments?
This audiobook might seem old school, but it's well worth the money. It was well done and is still holding its weight today.

Condensed Milk Gone Bad
I consider the UN-abridged version of this book to be too lengthy in description–– every scene is over-described, full of fluffy description to the point of frustration. But at least you know what is going on. It takes a long time for the action to happen, but arguably there is a payoff.
THIS ABRIDGED VERSION is the opposite. Too dense. Too fast. Too much. They say less is more––but in this case, although there are less pages, there is just too much going on in too little space. My wife and I listened to fifteen minutes of this and just could not take any more.
Even having read part of the book before, I was unable to follow the story! The narrator was drowned by background music. But on top of this, we were bombarded with a slew of characters and descriptions without space or action to process the information.
Buy this ONLY if you have a project or homework assignment on this book for your school and you want to be able to pack a month's worth of reading into a couple of hours. Get ready for a headache, loads of rewinding––and you better have a hardcopy to follow along.
FOR FRANK PERETTI TO READ:
From one writer to another: I know people have told you the book is too long. What they really mean is not that they want a shorter book. The reader wants ACTION to drive the plot. Less is indeed more. But that is not a matter of pages. Give less details. But make the ones you give count. Get to the meat of the ACTION faster. Then stick to the fresh description (through more metaphor too)–– then reveal other details by dialogue. And of course, through ACTION. I love what you're trying to do with Christianity though. Loads of people I know have loved your book. I'm just one voice.

What an Whirlwind!
This was my first Christian fiction and it was such a fun and exciting experience with a great message I'll leave you to discover for yourself! 😁
The author did a great job of effectively weaving two worlds (or relams) into one with such vivid imagery and intriguing characters.
It's short enough to finish in a day so I'd recommend for a commute or long trip.

Music ruins the listening experience but fine book
The loud and cheesy music and sound effects make this book very hard to listen to sadly as it irritatingly mixes with the words. So I could not even physically finish the book because of the music. Decent book so far but please audible, release a version without the music so we can just 'read'.

Love the story but abridged too far
I read this book years ago, and it inspired me to pray. The sound effects etc are great, but I feel the story has been abridged too far. If I had never read the book maybe I wouldn’t notice a lot was missing, but because I have, I felt this skipped a lot of details that made it hard to follow. Glad I listened, but not keeping it, it’s just too shortened.

(Sigh)...Face Palm!
To start with, I purchased the abridged version by accident (mistake No.1)
Now it may sound strange, but I find that a mid 80s sounding synth keyboard being used as background music throughout a story with the intent of providing "ambiance" can be a little distracting. Should have listened to a sample first! (mistake No.2)
So needless to say, this audio book was switched off within five minutes of hitting the play button. I had read some great reviews and all, but something just wasn't right with it. I mean.... it just seemed....somewhat watered down...
After another short web based research session I discovered, to my utter dismay, that I had just purchased a "christian horror novel"!
I'll paraphrase a quote from another unknown reviewer, "the idea of a christian horror novel is as ridiculous as the idea of christian porn." Didn't do my research!
(mistake No.3)
To make matters much worse, I discovered that upon charging the $9.99 to my old credit card by mistake (which is now inactive) I had incurred a $30 non-refundable bank fee! (mistake No.4)
So to summarize, I payed $40 to listen to 5 minutes of a 2 hour long "christian horror novel" with a six year old mashing the keys of a cheap, battery operated, toy piano in the background whilst I clawed at the steering wheel of my car and fumbled through my iPhone to find the stop button, narrowly missing a pedestrian in the process.
Excuse me while I punch myself in the face......

Story
Sally Beth Roe, a young loner, a burnout, a kind of "leftover hippie," finds herself caught in the middle of these bizarre events, fleeing for her life while trying to recall her dark past. Across a vast panorama of heart-stopping action, Sally Roe's journey is a penetrating portrayal of our times, a reflection of our wanderings, and a vivid reminder of the redemptive power of the Cross. The intensity of this best-selling novel comes alive when read by author Frank Peretti.
