Publisher's summary

The Keep is the first book in the Adversary Cycle from best-selling author F. Paul Wilson

"Something is murdering my men."

Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims.

When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings. And unbeknownst to anyone, there is another visitor on his way - a man who awoke from a nightmare and immediately set out to meet his destiny.

The battle has begun: On one side, the ultimate evil created by man, and on the other...the unthinkable, unstoppable, unknowing terror that man has inevitably awakened.

Powerful, exciting and terrifying. A+

The Keep is a perfect blend of white-knuckle suspense, intense action and pulse-pounding horror. Wilson creates a truly satisfying mythology rooted in strong historical and metaphysical themes. The character development is outstanding. This version specifically is bolstered by Lister’s performance, which is truly outstanding in both its range and sincerity. I’m so very glad I took a chance on it and don’t doubt you will as well. Go for it!

Narrator Mismatch!

I bought this book because the movie The Keep has long been a favorite of mine, and since I've always found books to be better than the movies made from them, I thought I would see how the book measured up against the movie. Story-wise, the book has followed the movie quite closely (I'm about half through it so far. Unfortunately, whoever decided to use Ralph Lister to narrate the book missed the mark badly. The narrator's heavy English accent doesn't work at all with the story, which is based in Romania, during WWII, and involving German officers and soldiers and Romanian citizens. The constant English accented dialogue throughout the entire book was annoying and distracting from an otherwise good story.

A bit long winded

I enjoyed the story, the pacing was a bit too slow. The characters were well developed except for the main protagonist, his story line was not as fully explored as I would have liked.

Good Fantasy but not really much Horror.

The horror elements are pretty tame but i enjoyed the world-building. Overall pretty good book, a little cliche and long but otherwise a good book. The performance was excellent. Love the narrator but I see the next book in the cycle has a different one, which may be a bummer. Guess we see.

Great story and expertly read—

As a fan of this genre, I’m disappointed I didn’t find this book earlier. I can only thank those who insisted it be brushed off and added to Audible for me to find.

Meh

Not scary at all. I was hoping for something a little nerve wracking. Maybe audiences of the time we’re different and feared easily. The narrator’s voice for Magda was so f’ng whiny I could barely listen. Drove me crazy with annoyance. I put up with it just to make it to the end.

The Keep

This has been a favorite book for decades! I am so happy to have it on audio and see that there are more books in the series. Ralph Lister was an excellent narrator.

The Keep keeps you listening

The story is generally satisfying with a sufficient measure of intrigue and unsettling mystery. And though the story arc is reasonably direct and somewhat predictable, it is nonetheless enjoyable. The performance is first rate and elevates the story. It’s effectively entertaining.
