Publisher's summary

Something quite odd is happening in Second World - the planet's foremost MMORPG. Something that's causing alliances to be broken, and friendships, forgotten. A worthless low-level mine becomes the stage of vicious battles, its burned ruins suddenly contested by the game's toughest clans. Every border is controlled, and every road in the province blocked off. The weak players and NPCs alike are subjected to non-stop violent raids courtesy of Eastern invaders. And the strong...the strong are scouring the virtual world for the culprit - the weirdest noob the game has ever seen.

Slow start but worth the effort.

Started slow and at times monotonous, if you haven't played mmorpg style games before then the first few chapters might stop you in your tracks, however the overall story was enjoyable and immersive.

Overuse of the word NOOB?

While the book does refer to the MC as a noob to an excessive amount, he is in fact a new player with what can be considered nearly zero exposure to modern day video games. To top it off and give justification to other people calling him a Noob, is the fact that the game is the biggest sensation for the past few years and the MC has been so isolated that he can only vaguely recall the name of the game.

While other reviews say that there is an excessive use of the word Noob to describe the MC and many of his actions, I have personally played online video games where people will scream and curse at others saying they are a noob or that action was a noob thing all the time. As I have had this experience, it is not an issue that the other characters in the book who use this term, who also play the game for a living, might become upset with someone who is so unfamiliar with the game. The fact that he comes across as someone who can't even remember to look at online posts for help, destroyed his stat build, and can't even figure out how to eat on his own, further cements this notion.

Give it a chance

I refrained getting this book even though it was a suggestion because I wasn't ready to get absorbed into another series, but now that some of the other series I have devoted time to have reached a lul I had the time to invest in this series and I enjoyed it as much as I knew I would. I am also very happy that there are a few more stories in this series that I can already dive into.

Noob, noob, noob.

What a noob. You're a noob. Such a noob. Noobs like you are too noobish to do even the noobiest of tasks that normal noobs can do. Quit noobing around. Stupid level 0 noob.

Seriously, the word noob is horrifically overused during the first five hours. There are several words that could replace it just fine and NOT detract from the story or dialogue. How many times can one person call another a noob in the same conversation?

Most of the characters seem to have a lewd quality about them, aside from the main character, and treat people of lower level with complete disdain. This definitely gives the world a different feel and creates a cutthroat environment. It seemed that only a select few players are decent people and the NPC's were also well mannered as games usually make them out to be.

A confusing aspect of the game is the prompts. I was lost several times because the prompts we're too similar and it sometimes sounded like a single prompt was read like six times for a specific achievement.

The world was slowly being built up throughout the book and the fact that people worked to convert in-game currency to real money made it that much more interesting. In-game slaves? That's pretty cool. An unstoppable bugged NPC called Bug? That's also pretty cool. Dude gets a sex change?? Okay...what a twist! I give the book an overall of four stars because I enjoyed the story so much and I wasn't going to let the word "noob" influence my review heavily.

There are a few things that I hope get cleared up in the second book because they didn't make sense but I'll be listening to the second book nonetheless.

Weirdest Noob

Great book.
It had enough of the rpg aura about it without becoming all numbers.
Great story with just enough action and intrigue to wrap everything into a good feeling of what’s about to happen.
I liked the narration, it was well done.

The first 2/3 of the story gets WAAYYY into explaining every detail about what at game is and how 2nd World is played however if you stick with it and read the next books you will find a compelling story that’s is worth the buy

Yeah, I'm looking forward to the next book...

This is probably the weirdest mmorpg book that I've listened to, to date, and that makes it pretty dang weird indeed! This player (Ross), instead of turning off all the updates and stats, actually welcomed them (as he had no idea about the game and what he was doing)... So as one reviewer put it, the story is very crunchy, with numbers and updates. Initially, that would pull me out of the story, but then I grudgingly accepted it, and finally realised that it was laughable and fun! The story is actually quite mesmerizing as we follow Ross' adventure, so yeah, it's crunchy, but with a nummy nougat finish!
I've got to say that the narrator, Kevin T Collins, isn't going down as my favorite narrator, not by any means, but he's not offensive either, and he didn't mispronounce anything, either! To me, he just seemed kinda' bland... C'est la vie!
Now, I've got to say, that in spite of all the "crunchy" bits, I'm actually looking forward to listening to the next story!
