Publisher's summary

Trapped between worlds. Potentia might be the way out. Time to kill Something.

Luke is an apprentice leather worker, training with his family to one day take over the business. He and his friends Andre, Taylor, and Zed have known each other forever, and swear that nothing will ever tear apart their friendship.

Then the Royal Decree comes. With the Dynasty of Dogs invading, and strange monsters appearing in the Hollow Kingdom, a draft has been implemented. Everyone 17 or older is required to be tested for "Potential". If they have it, they will join the mysterious and renowned Ascender Corps. If not, they will be drafted into the Legion as a forced recruit.

Three of the friends test as powerful, or dangerous, classes of Ascender. Luke is found to have Potential, barely, but when he steps through the portal to begin his training…he is pulled to a plane that shouldn't exist. With no class trainer, the possibility of survival is low. Luke decides that he wants to live, and keeping his humanity isn't going to help.

His best chance is going Full Murderhobo.

Ridiculous

If you want to see the real reviews, go to the Goodreads website. Amazon Audible pulls reviews for any books that have been returned. So so books tend to float to the top with better ratings because they are mostly positive and very skewed.

Misleading book description

So this book says that it’s going to follow one main character but that’s not true. The book follows three main characters and jumps between the three because they are separate most of the book. For someone who HATES multiple main characters this was extremely annoying.

On the upside, two of the three characters are actually enjoyable to read. The supposed main character was my favorite and I wish it had focused on him.

Just god awful

Seriously? 4.8 star average? When I see a book with ratings that high, I'm expecting something extraordinary.
What Dakota Krout is serving up here feels more like a first draft of a poorly conceived novel, This is not even up the the poorest quality standards that I'd be looking for in a book store. Maybe I'm being a little hard... but I'm making up for the solid 4.8 review... where did that come from? That is like saying this is up there with the greatest fantasy novels of all time.

The characters here are paper thin. The story keeps shifting from one character to another... there are four of them... i think. It was hard to tell. Maybe part of the problem was the over the top narration going on. Gilliland has a good cartoon exaggerated manner... but the same voice was applied to each character and it honestly got annoying after a while.

The plot... while kind of interesting, was just a rehash of 200 other lit rpg books. While not perfect Aleron Kongs books are better in this this genre.

Seriously, this book is not worth a credit. I've got around 700 audible titles in my library & I'd rank this very nearly at the bottom.

Best from DK so far

I'm an old head from WuxiaWorld ...so I love cultivation novels.
This is shaping up to be my favorite series from Mountaindale Press so far!!!

DK was the first author I found who really did a good job of introducing aspects of mana channels and cultivation into western style fantasy. Divine Dungeon scratched that itch, but only barely. The world building was great, and the whole city development aspect was great too ...but I wanted the story to go deeper and I feel like DK ended that story arc prematurely.

Arcanist is enjoyable, but it's really snarky n that takes a bit away from the "seriousity" of the MC's development. I still like the series, but again I feel like it was missing something.

Artorion is dope, and I will continue with the series, but again I think the snarkiness is a little thick and it detracts from the story for me. Also, at times Artorion feels aimless and pointless ...and that's not my favorite style of story-telling. I enjoy trying to figure out how the MC will overcome the challenges set before him/her, and guessing at what curve balls the author might throw. Artorion doesn't allow for anything of that, he's just kind of floating around all the time.

Murderhobo is finally picking up where I felt that Divine Dungeon left off. There are funny moments in it, but it doesn't try to make everything into a joke. The magic system is really diverse and well executed. I'm enjoying the development of all the MC's. They have real problems with real consequences. There's great world building happening, in a way that keeps me curious and excited. The story is keeping me engaged and I'm loving it.

I hope this ends up being more than 3 books, and regardless I hope DK sticks with this style of story-telling for his next series in the Cal-multiverse as well.

This one is a winner. Highly recommend!!!

A bit off.

I can see why some people (myself included) would be less enthusiastic about this book. After all, now Dakota Krout is working on three series, and they all take a while to write. (Compaired to, say, Eric Ugland. Who has managed to masterfully balance both quality and speed) I have little issue with the book itself. Not the biggest fan of the Cookie development (Unless it becomes a sentient item.) Overall, mostly offput by the narrator. Not bad, just needs to work on his female voices. (Didn't mean to sound so harsh. I know both narrating and writing are a lot more difficult than I realize, and I really appreciate both the author and narrator.)
P.S. Kudos to anyone who both read enough of my review to see this and was diligent enough to go this deep into the comments. 👍

Should be 6 hours shorter

There is a very obvious part where the story starts about 6 hours into the book, everything before that was very boring.

Cool concept unfortunately wasted

Reading the synopsis for this instantly intrigued me - but many LitRPG books fall at the first hurdle and this unfortunately was no exception.
The dialogue is clunky and cringey at parts, the first half of the book is devoted to 3 different narratives (2 of which are notably less interesting than the one described in the synopsis) and the mindless reading of stat points happens far too often for comfort.
What could have been an interesting story about a Borderlands-Krieg type character is boiled down to a boring and repetitive bog standard litRPG.

Sadly this book is nothing but boring jokes and no real story to talk about. I could not get myself past 5 hours of this, hoping it would be better.

Half of a great story

Good premise and fun characters but with the short length of the book split into a few characters it just feels like half a story.

Absolutely horrendous

The first 4 hours of this book is nothing but a constant info dump and 1 dimensional characters, if you can even call them characters.
Do not buy, worst book I've ever listened to. Its selling point, the murder hobo, can be kinda funny but not nearly enough to balance the sheer amount of info dump.
This book has made me completely avoid all of Dakota Krouts work.

11 hrs and 52 mins you will never get back

After seeing an article about how Dakota Krout was earning $$$ as an independent author I thought this might be a good way of checking him out on the grounds he must be doing something right. Well what a waste of my time. The story ideas and concepts are fine, but the writing is just so basic and clunky. It reads more like a high school level fan fiction than something I handed over money for. Also the narrator makes most of the cast sound like they are straining to take a dump.

Lots of puns, wit and laughs abound. I really enjoyed the descriptions and differences in the classes of the four protagonists. Looking forward to the next in the series.

Hilariously brilliant and ultimately entertaining

The litrpg features are non intrusive and the story as a whole flows really well. The concepts involved are brilliant and I can’t wait to see how it evolves.

A little bizarre, a little funny, a lot violent (especially against the poor goats).

Well worth a listen. The bloopers at the end really put a ribbon on the whole listen!

Just buy it, it's good.

Well to start of with this was a surprisingly fresh take on the litrpg genre, with it being the light hearted but heavy thing that it is. The story was fun and though I see a few people upset with the character swaps every couple of chapters, it's not as bad as they make it out to be, yes one of the story lines isn't as good as the others, it still adds something different and in the end gives a good fleshed out character.
The narrator did an amazing job, gave all the characters life and personality. (also loved the bloopers at the end)

So if you are on the fence but enjoy anything litrpg or another world type of story, definitely pick this one up. Cannot wait for the next book.

Simply the best.

Better than all the rest.
Really good litrpg/cultivator type story, a decently fair split between plot and system exposition.
Really good story and pacing, the madness is portrayed real well. Honestly I am kinda rooting for Zed as long as he teams up with Luke.
You just had to put one more "Ruthless" in there didn't you?

Ended up hooked

took me a about an hour to really get into it, and get use to the narration style but I really ended up enjoying it by the end and was keen to see how it all ended and I'll be going on in the series. Found it quite amusing at times but the stats do definitely go on longer than they should in a few spots and a bit too frequent, but all in all I enjoyed and will finisj the series at this point. Also the bloopers at the end were great, wish more books had that ahahaha

I tried to stick it out. I failed.

The narrator can portray different characters fairly well, but only a couple of hours in and I've had enough already. As others have said, this book embodies an MMO grind. I think the last 45min or so has been one character explaining to the "gifted apprentice" about their stats and how to level up. Sorry, stopping there and moving on.

Great Book, Even Better Narrator

This books is a fun listen, if you have a background in gaming, DnD or similar you'll appreciate the attention to stat's, the ways abilities synergies and the paths taken to power.

Then the narrator Christian J. Gilliland was a joy to listen too. I hope he sticks with the whole series as they come out.

A MMO with a boring story

The narrator did an amazing job, the only reason i could manage to finish the book. The story itself is rather boring and has no real plot. It is pretty much a boring MMO where main characters level in a starter zone
