Award-winning author ReShonda Tate Billingsley delivers a poignant novel about the power - and fragility - of family, personal identity, and the choices we are called on to make....

Raised by a widowed mother, Jill Reed has come a long way from her difficult youth. But while she may not have had money, Jill never doubted she was rich in love. Her mother, Connie, made Jill the center of her world. Now, even though she has a young family of her own, it’s Jill’s turn to care for her ailing mother.

When early dementia begins to set in, Connie starts talking about Jill’s “other life.” Jill assumes it’s just rambling confusion. Still, Connie’s stories about Jill’s childhood, and her father’s early death, never quite added up. And when a strange man shows up to Jill’s job bearing news that turns Jill’s life upside down, there’s no denying Connie’s devastating secret.

As Jill sets out to learn more about her past, she’s stunned by what she learns and what it will mean for her future. Now, she must decide what price she’s willing to pay to claim the life that’s rightfully hers.

The narrator was good. I struggled with Connie's sense of entitlement. She never accepted that her actions were wrong.

Unbelievable Story

First, let me just say I did not enjoy the narrator. She was dry, boring, and lacked some serious emotions. Now with that being said, the story was ok. It started out a little boring. I was not impressed with Marcus. I that he was all self accused. Later my thoughts about him changed. I wasn't sure if my first thoughts about him was due to the reading of the narrator. But all in all, the story improved and I was happy with it.

Fabulous

The story was interesting, but it just felt like the author was trying too hard to stretch the story out. Sometimes it just made the main character feel ridiculous.
The narrator just didn't feel authentic to the characters. Even something as simple as saying "Mama" felt contrived. It was even worse when she portrayed the supporting characters.
Overall, it wasn't terrible, but it could have been better.

Underwhelmed

The story was great. A story that is believable and family oriented. The narrator was good. She conveyed the emotions of each character. Anything by RTB is going to be a good read and or listen!

Doesn't disappoint

This book kept my interest the whole time, even though I found myself saying the next lines of some of the characters just before they were spoken. Good story line about not ever regretting a life you were never meant to have, and healing. Not too heavy of a read, and minimal cursing. Carra Patterson is an engaging narrator, but I have to speed her up to 1.25 as she speaks too slowly for me. Still, I will look for more books narrated by her.

A bit predictable, but still a great story
