Publisher's Summary

Blackboard best seller Sugar is the superb first novel by Bernice L. McFadden.

An emotional journey from grief and suffering to understanding and forgiveness, Sugar will keep you listening until its graceful conclusion.

Sugar arrives in the small town of Bigelow, Arkansas, like an ominous storm. She saunters down the street in a blonde wig and spiked heels, cigarette dangling between red-painted lips. Without even speaking to her, the women in town hate her. But when she moves in next door to Pearl, a woman who tragically lost her daughter 15 years earlier, the two women bond over tragic pasts.

In this remarkably vivid novel read by gifted narrator Myra Lucretia Taylor, you can almost smell the blooming magnolias in this 1950s-era town.

Wow...

I can't remember a time when I have been moved to tears like this since I read the book "Roots"...The entire books had me in suspense, things started to make since as far as me connecting dots at the end but I never thought that it would have me emotional...The author, and the reader had me on edge and emotional till the end...Thank you for writing this, and teaching me lessons about judging a book by its cover, and living our lives. I have so many other things to say but can't quite put them in to words...

Beautifully written and narrated!

The author's words are beautifully descriptive of each character, place, and time. I fell in love with Sugar. She was complicated and although her life was hard she was not sad. The four 🌟 are because the story was heavy for me and the timelines were confusing. I'm so glad I read it and I will read more by this writer but it will be after something a bit lighter. Marvelous work!

Outstanding

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Just a beautifully written book. Lyrical, humorous and heart breaking. Ms. McFadden weaves an involved tale of loss, love, friendship and survival. Sugar is a memorable character I won't forget and I'm sure I'll return time and again to reacquaint myself with Pearl and Sugar.

Sugar

Well!! Sugar was something. But no one deserves to be judged by no one of flesh! I almost wish Joe and Peael were my neighbors. They were what you call real! I wish that Sugar would come back or Everyone found out sooner that she belonged to Joe and Pearl literally! Good thing she didn't run off with Seth.

This book was great couldn't put it down. On to the next one... The life of Sugar I think. The narration was also good.
