Publisher's summary

Deep below the University, there is a dark place. Few people know of it: a broken web of ancient passageways and abandoned rooms. A young woman lives there, tucked among the sprawling tunnels of the Underthing, snug in the heart of this forgotten place.

Her name is Auri, and she is full of mysteries.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things is a brief, bittersweet glimpse of Auri’s life, a small adventure all her own. At once joyous and haunting, this story offers a chance to see the world through Auri’s eyes. And it gives the listener a chance to learn things that only Auri knows....

In this book, Patrick Rothfuss brings us into the world of one of The Kingkiller Chronicle’s most enigmatic characters. Full of secrets and mysteries, The Slow Regard of Silent Things is the story of a broken girl trying to live in a broken world.

Wonderfully written and read by a true craftsman.

Wonderfully written and read by a true craftsman of language. Beautifully descriptive and delicate and fine as fine.

What a beautiful feast of a story!!!

I love, love, love it! I love the character I love the storytelling… I love the richness of the word usage! I often found myself backing up just to listen to a beautiful paragraph again and again. I adore Patrick’s stories and I hope he writes more like this because he painted a picture in my mind of exactly what she was doing and what she was thinking and what she was feeling and what she was saying! I give this five on every level because it was just that delicious!

Excellent story!

Despite the author's insecurities regarding the value of this story, I found it to be delightful. My only regret is that it is so short. I hope he writes more about her - I'd love to discover how she came to live in the under thing.

Auri

What did you love best about The Slow Regard of Silent Things?

This story is about Auri. I don't know about you, but whatever Patrick Rothfuss writes, I inhale, listen to, breath again and listen to again. He has a way of writing that is lovely. What did I like best? I liked learning more about Auri. Period. I loved her making soap.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Auri was the only character. Who could want anything more? Unless it is the last book of the trilogy.

Which scene was your favorite?

I am a person who loved to make anything from scratch. I card my wool, spin and either weave it or knit it....so I loved hearing about the soap making. Just an FYI, it is not as easy as Auri does it

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The whole book was moving. It made me cry, laugh, shake my head...total enjoyable. But if you don't read the first two books....it will not make much sense.

Any additional comments?

Mr. Rothfuss probably never reads these reviews...but if he does, I want to say how many hours I have listened to and enjoyed his story of Kvothe. I am going to get the book Rogues, where he writes about Bast. Thank you for being such a talented writer...

Elegant

I loved the way this book is written, it’s loving and magical! I know some very unexpected type A people who loved this as well. I listened and then had to buy it in print so that I could hold onto the words. I want to hold some of the phasing in my head and bring it out for when I need a “grin!”

Engaging and beautifully written

This story is a joy to read. The language, the timing, and the interesting word choices all come together to make this story engrossing and even entrancing. Beyond that, it’s chock full of tantalizing hints about Alchemy, Naming, and what seems like potential world shaping Magics that we’ve only heard stories about. I loved this strange short story, and it makes me even hungrier for The Doors of Stone than before!

An amazing story.

"This story is for all of the slightly broken people out there."

A fantastic piece of writing, slightly odd, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Now I know Auri.

Auri is the endless explorer. She is mysterious and knows all. My daughter is Auri. Sometimes I am Auri.

I wish I didn't read other reviews first...

Yes, this is not a normal story. I don't care. Mr. Rothfuss, please, write more odd and unusual stories like this. Break the story mold in two.

I like it cause it's different.

most times I walk away from epic fantasy novels feeling like I've been immersed in water, or been deep diving in some subject or other. this one makes me feel light like I've been dancing on the wind, and it's enjoyable
