Publisher's summary

From childhood on, something or Someone has called us on a journey of the heart. It is a journey full of intimacy, adventure, beauty, and more than a little danger. The Sacred Romance calls to us in our fondest memories, our greatest loves, our noblest achievements, even our deepest hurts. The reward is worth the risk. God Himself longs for us, if we are but willing.

First published in 1997, The Sacred Romance is quietly on its way to becoming a classic. Why have so many people connected so powerfully to the book? Authors Brent Curtis and John Eldredge put words to long-forgotten feelings. They voice our unspoken fears about God's goodness and our own emptiness. Without being preachy or cliche, the authors offer a glimpse of God's heart that is tender, risky, and compelling. The Sacred Romance is the story of our lives; it is God's story. It is His invitation to experience the beauty, intimacy, and adventure we secretly desire.

The MOST INCREDIBLE book I have ever read.

I ended Up starting over from the beginning several times, not because I couldn’t understand it but rather because I wanted to get more and more out of it with each read. This is become the best book I have ever read in my lifetime. I encourage anyone who sees it to read it as well!

Personal Growth Guaranteed

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book has a unbelievable message about the soul. We have all experienced "arrows" as they call it in the book, or "hurts" in our lives whether we know it or not. This book helps you sort through your past and grow with a great understanding of who you were meant to be. I passionately loved this book. This will be a book you should read or listen to multiple times, or go through the audio and then dig into the book. Beautifully written!

Reasonable take on the sacred, over the top empathy

I generally enjoyed the approach to drawing closer to God, but was a bit put off by some of the sappiness of both the writing and reading.

Deeply Thought Provoking

This is a deeply touching, thought provoking and life changing book. It gives the heart words that describe where our a deepest longings, disappointments and desires originate and reside. It's a dive beyond the religious and into what makes us truly human. The narration was spot on. A worthy read.

Needed a Good Editor

The authors made some very helpful points in this book and I’m glad I read it. Also, they drew material from some authors I’ve never read and may check out.
The problems I have with it are:
1. the excess of autobiographical material,
2. the rambling, repetitive nature of the writing.
3. the book seemed a bit overdone to me.
In short, it was good but needed a thorough edit.
Also, I listened to this via Audible audiobook which was engagingly narrated by Kelly Ryan Dolan. He did an excellent job with the narration. There was one significant problem with the audiobook, however, in that the chapter delineation was way off. There were, I believe, seven chapters in the audio and twelve in the actual book. I took notes on some points I want to remember, and had to list the audio chapter number and time stamp in case I want to revisit them. I’m not sure I’ll ever find them again, but it’s worth a try.

Wild & wonderful - how & why God loves us

I had previously read all of John Eldredge's other books, so I was familiar with many of the ideas contained in this one. But I have been struck anew by this book's message of God's love and specifically its intensity and its purpose. The authors write with immense wisdom, with a gentleness that still conveys God's sovereignty & power. I love the way they incorporate passages of Scripture to add weight to the points they are making. Hopefully everyone who gives this book a go will be wooed into seeking out more of this majestic, mysterious but still knowable God. The narrator is first-class!

First real foray into writing and it shows

John's later books are substantially better. perhaps if I had started with this book, I might have appreciated it more. Wild at Heart and Fathered by God are far more polished and developed.
