It was an ordinary job. Another night, another asshole collector of the supernatural. I free some poor little beasties from their cages, pocket a few trinkets to pay my bills, and burn the place down on my way out. Just call me the Robin Hood of monster emancipation. I didn’t count on three manly monsters following me home like lost puppies. Stunningly hot lost puppies, but still. Now I’ve got a seductively cheeky incubus, a sweetly enthusiastic demon, and a grimly stoic angel camped out in my kitchen.

When last we met, dear friends, a man had come calling, claiming to be Crispin Alistair Winterbottom, my dead British ex-spy. A notion I'd find ludicrous, if the handsome imposter didn't, in fact, look exactly like my dead British ex-spy. But there's no time for that mystery when a quiet walk on our private stretch of beach turns up something far more pressing - another tragedy in my beloved small Washington town. That's right. I, Stevie Cartwright, ex-witch turned amateur sleuth, have stumbled upon another murder. But this time it's closer to home, more personal.

Publisher's Summary
The Council is the governing Coven over the Land of Five, a region entirely inhabited - and split apart - by witches with varying powers.
Lilith Lace, a witch thought to be born powerless, happily resides in Ignis, the Coven of Fire, until she suddenly develops telekinesis, an ability only seen in some witches born in Mentis, the Coven of the Mind. She's terrified of it, unsure who she can trust. Her best friends, Helena and Clio, are hot and cold about what she can do, leaving Lilith even more unsure about her future.
At her Arcane Ceremony, the truth comes out.
When the Council learns what she can do, she’s taken under their wing and is finally told the truth - everything she’s learned about the Land of Five, herself included, have been nothing but lies.

CLIFFHANGER BUT WORTH IT! :)
A very interesting and witchy world has been created - and I was sucked right in. There's something different about this witchy tale, it's a slow burn, but it will drawn you in and won't let you go until it's ready. Enter if you dare! Bwahahahah (sinister laugh) ;-) I liked the the world that Kayla Krantz created, and it was beautifully narrated by Lynn Norris. I'm excited to hear more, and I can't wait for new books to be released on Audible! Cliffhanger for sure, but I think it's well worth the wait :) Thought it was a great audiobook! I'm in! I find myself looking forward to the next book...
I rather liked this book, which is surprising because it was not without some problems... I got so tired of Lilith exclaiming that since she was crippled, she wasn't good enough... couldn't do it... or that nobody would believe in her... Despite that, and that I'm generally never happy with a cliffhanger ending, I mostly liked this coming of age story. Lilith, for the most part, never backed down from a fight and what she believed was right... So yeah, I actually find myself looking forward to the next book... And hopefully, our protagonist won't be so riddled with self pity and doubt!

Awesome Witchy Characters!
I love a good witch story and was eager to listen to this when I read the blurb, and while I thoroughly enjoyed it, there was a few things that bothered me, which is why it’s not a five-star read. The plot was slow to build. It’s centered on Lilith Lace who lives in Ignis, they are the coven of Fire. When she was young, she was horribly burned in an accident with fire and it’s affected her leg and her life ever since. She believed her parents and didn’t question things. Lilith wasn’t showing any signs of having magic and thought she would be one of the powerless, that is until she suddenly develops Telekinesis. But that ability is usually only seen in people who are part of the Mentis Coven, the coven of the mind. How can a girl from Ignis, have a power that only people in Mentis can have? But it doesn’t stop there, Lilith has more questions when she seems to be targeted by a rogue group of witches and is recruited to be one of the Council. The main thing that bothered me with this book was the fact that we don’t get a lot of information on the Land of Five and the breakdown of the covens. I wanted to know more about each coven and their abilities. It also lacks tenseness, when they are trying to find the answers, I felt like there should have been more about it. They seemed to spend no time in each coven before they went on their way. There was no real sense of danger when there should have been. Other than that, I loved the plot. It was entertaining and kept my attention till the end! I pretty much loved all the characters. The author spent a lot of time on character development, which showed because they were all well written. We find out bit by bit about Lilith and who she is. She is so uncertain of herself, what with her disability and the fact that her powers seem unreliable, yet she is also feisty and brave, which we see when she is taken and made part of the Council against her will! She was such an easy to like character and was probably why I liked the book as much as I did. The council, of course, are a shady bunch of witches. All Lilith knows is what she has grown up listening to, but now that she is to become one of them, she starts to see that they aren’t what she thought. I loved the idea of the Sage and what she is. I’m actually really looking forward to the next one to get more information on the council and the rogue group, I feel that now the world building is done in this book, we can concentrate on the nitty-gritty details!! In all, this was a great read. I was delighted that the author chose to focus on the world and character building and not on romance! It was a pleasant change from some of the other YA books I’ve read. I feel like I like Lilith more for the fact she is so intent on getting answers and doesn’t swoon at the first sight of a boy!! Filled with some awesome characters, great word building, lies, deceit and betrayal, it’s one I can recommend to all. This is my first time listening to this narrator, and it definitely won’t be my last! Lynn Norris was brilliant. She had plenty of tones and voices for the characters and really put her all into bringing them alive. Her inflections were spot on and the world came alive under her narration. I will have to check out more from her. There was no problem with the production quality. Audiobook was provided for review by the author/narrator/publisher. An enjoyable story
I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review. I was very pleased that this was not your normal book about witches. It takes a different approach to witches and magic. It was a little slow at times, but is generally pretty good. The narrator does a good job on the book, as well. All in all, a good listen if you're a fantasy/paranormal fan.

Enjoyable Fantasy With Major Cliffhanger
The story was interesting and kept my attention. The world building was good and the idea of separation between Witch abilities was very unique. The story is slow building with some twists and turns that keeps you wondering who the real bad guys are! Narration was excellent and brought the story to life. This narrator makes each character unique and you always know who is talking. The plot was slow and the descriptions were very detailed. The story doesn’t pick up until towards the last few chapters. The story concludes in a major cliffhanger! I’m looking forward To the next book! "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

talk about a cliffhanger!
Would you listen to The Council again? Why?
If I did, it'd be for Lynn Norris. It's all about Lynn Norris. She has style, substance, wit, real intelligence, beautifully delineated characters — and oh, that voice.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
To be honest, the story is not that compelling for me, despite the energy the fabulous narrator, Lynn Norris, infused into every character and plot point. It's a decent plot, but the writing is pedestrian and gratuitously ungrammatical, with too many words just plain misused; malapropisms are indefensible in the age of Google. Also, it's all in first-person, but with glaring faux pas for that MO throughout: the narrator says stuff like, I couldn't hear what he said, and then quotes what he said verbatim. That kinda thing just yanks me out of the moment, and is such an easy fix: just switch POV now and then!
Most interesting? I guess the whole supernatural thing, for which I had high hopes going in; it can be such a gas if it's given its full due (which it emphatically wasn't in this case). The least interesting bit is the marked absence of rich, discrete cultural detail for each of the covens; the protagonists' trip through each one is cursory at best, the "mission" the characters are on is an absurd failure in terms of the paltry amount of time spent in each coven's territory, precious little interaction with inhabitants that aren't already known to them, and the lack of thought and effort they expend in identifying subversives before hustling on to the next locale. A disappointingly lazy construction of a world with little texture or nuance, leaving only the lasting impression of Lynn Norris's always exceptional work.
Oh, and BTW, that's a truly shameless (and again, lazy!) cliffhanger at the end of this book.
What about Lynn Norris’s performance did you like?
Two major things stand out here: her beautifully detailed vocal characterizations (of which my favorite here is probably Lazarus, though he's but a cameo — and that's the point, of course. No opportunity to expand the palette is overlooked.), and her full-on commitment to the breathless terror and excitement of the battle scene at the end of this story. Norris's rendering of dialog is always natural and flowing, but the identity of speakers is never lost in complicated exchanges. And her voice, the instrument itself, is just beautiful and clear at all times. She elevates the text far beyond its intrinsic value, and delivers a flawlessly paced, intelligent, emotionally rich performance. I actually search on the Audible site for books read by her. She never fails to engage and delight.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Hey, Lilith:
Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?
Do you know?
Any additional comments?
Can't wait till the material offered to Lynn Norris is worthy of her extraordinary talents.

I hate cliffhangers
I knew it was the first one of a trilogy going in, but wow that’s a cliffhanger, and it’s only a part of a story. I prefer series where each book can tell it’s own story, the the series becomes more. This isn’t like that. But, it is engaging. There is action. You grow to love the main character. You ponder the mysteries and unfairness of her friends and family. There are love interests (but it is very much YA and clean). It’s also quite an original take on witchcraft. I enjoyed it. And will likely seek out the sequel. I received this audiobook for free in exchange for a review.

Great read. Looking forward to the next.
I loved the strong character of Lillith and all she has to go though to find out who she truly is. To lose friends, gain friends, and earn enemies. The story goes through many hardships on her journey and the councils plans for all. The chill hanger got me, but i can't wait to find out how she progress through hr new ordeal.

Slow start
It was a very slow start to grabbing you into it. About 1/3 of the way through it got better and can’t wait to listen to the next in the series. The last 1/3 of the book was really good and engaging. The narration was great!! Don’t be eager to give up on this one because of the slow start!!

The Council
I really enjoyed this book by Kayla Krantz. Once started, could not stop listening to what happened next to the young witch Lilith, as she came into her powers. It was just so easy to get into the story and now raring to get into the second of this trilogy. It was narrated beautifully too by Lynn Norris, who managed to capture each character and kept up with the pace and the plot of the story as it came to its gripping end. Getting straight onto the second book now!!!

Worth a read/listen
If you love witches/magic, then this book is well worth a listen and I can only imagine that the story plays out more in the next book. The narrator does a great job too, moving seamlessly between voices making it easy to keep up with the story

The Council
I loved this book! Lilith is a witch, maybe. She has a limp and a story she doesn't rrust explaining it. She has a few friends, but the Council wants Lilith, not them. She doesn't get it,yet. Well written, intriguing book one in a series.I am looking forward to book 2. Lynn Norris was the perfect narrator.I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.

Excellent start to the trilogy
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Lilith Lace lives in the Land of Ignis she thought she was born powerless but when she develops powers from the Land of Mentis the Council take notice of her . She is at a ceremony when members of the Council forcefully take her and force her to join the Council. She is forced to carry out work finding rogue members of the Land of Five who sympathise with The Elementals even though she doesn’t agree with the Councils methods or motives. I really enjoyed listening although there’s a huge cliffhanger but thankfully the second book is already available so I’m off to listen to that now. The narrator Lynn Norris is excellent at every voice she does.
