Publisher's Summary

Growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has lived a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, and while her bullying seems isolated at first, things quickly escalate, and reclusive World War I veteran Toby becomes a target of her attacks. While others have always seen Toby's strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness. She will soon need to find the courage to stand as a lone voice of justice as tensions mount.

Brilliantly crafted, Wolf Hollow is a haunting tale of America at a crossroads and a time when one girl's resilience and strength help to illuminate the darkest corners of our history.

What the Critics Say

"The honesty of Wolf Hollow will just about shred your heart, but Annabelle's courage and compassion will restore it to you, fuller than before. This book matters." (Sara Pennypacker, New York Times best-selling author of Pax)

"Trusting its readers implicitly with its moral complexity, Wolk's novel stuns." (Kirkus)

"The narrative is powerful, complex, and lifelike...a truly moving debut." (School Library Journal)

    "Not for middle grade"

This is a well-written book, but it's too dark for for upper-elementary or lower-middle readers. Reviews typically compare to To Kill a Mockingbird. Even that book is more of a high school read.

"A friend recommended this book to me and I was not disappointed."

I would recommend it to anyone.
Although it was a middle school level I found the story held my attention and had enough twists in it to make it a little exciting and kept my interest.

    "Beautiful, but not realistic"

I wanted to love this book. The story in and of itself has great meaning, is beautifully written, and is performed well- however I started to get frustrated with the practicality of the plot. I kept being reminded that the main character is only 11- which becomes increasingly harder to believe with all that unfolds. I suppose anything is possible, but this fact kept making me question the greater meaning of the book and had me frustrated with the scenarios. It seems almost too far fetched and extreme for what it's trying to teach, which disappointed me.

    "Frustrating"

I found this story to be utterly frustrating and annoying. The characters were all okay and well developed, in my opinion. And the beginning of the book was interesting and built a good story with just enough left unsaid. then the story took a huge downward turn when an 11-yr old made decisions that the adults in the story simply followed even it was clear that the decisions were bad and would lead to a bad ending.

I am okay with a bad ending and would have been okay if this one if there were some kind of self-realization at some point that the bad decisions lead to a road of no return.

there were other things that were a bit wonky but I won't nik-pick here. Overall, the story was interesting, if frustrating. The characters were okay and I thought the narrator did a good job.

"Someone must love this reader... but NOT ME"
What did you like best about Wolf Hollow? What did you like least?

This is a sweet YA book, but Emily Rankin is not my style.

What didn’t you like about Emily Rankin’s performance?

Her tone is slow and she speaks like a very young girl. She uses the same intonation to describe action scenes and slow descriptions, with the same kind of sing-songy, small child inflection. She must have fans as I know lots of other YA books are narrated by her, but this is not for my ears.

    "Deep listening experience"

Our family enjoyed this book immensely. I politely disagree with a previous reviewer who said this isn't appropriate for kids. This book tackles big topics of bullying, the emotional fall-out of war, the importance of kindness and of true morality, but it does so in a way that a 10 and 12 year old can comprehend. It is presented in a way that provides a good starting point for family discussion on these topics. There was a point where I was worried the book would go too far, but it did not. If your children are quite sensitive or easily upset, this may not be appropriate for them yet. But I really believe that most kids will listen without issue, and enjoy this story as much as we did. On another topic, I love that the narrator is an extremely brave girl!

    "A Touching Story"

I felt as if I were a bystander as I listened to this book. The narration was perfect and the story very well written. A young eleven year old girl,Annabelle, experiences things that will make her who she is as an adult. Don't miss this one.

    "Good story, Unsatisfying ending"

The story was extremely engaging and well crafted. While the ending was more true to life, I read for pleasure and would have been more satisfied with a "happier" ending where good is rewarded and evil is punished. But I guess it's good for my teenager to learn that this doesn't always/usually happen.

    "great book, very enjoyable."

I read this book with my son for his summer reading list, and really enjoyed it. The narration was well done and the book was both suspenseful and meaningful.
