Publisher's Summary

Thirteen-year-old Steven has a totally normal life (well, almost): He plays drums in the All-Star Jazz Band, has a crush on the hottest girl in school (who doesn’t know he’s alive), frequently finds himself sitting across from his school counselor (who bribes him with candy), and is constantly annoyed by his five-year-old brother, Jeffrey (who is cuter than cute). Oh, Steven has parents, too (the kind that embarrass him). But when Jeffrey gets sick, Steven’s world is turned upside down as he is forced to deal with his brother’s illness, his parents’ attempts to keep the family in one piece, the band, overdue homework, girls, and of course, Dangerous Pie (yes, you have to listen to the book to find out what that is).

In a debut that has won raves, Jordan Sonnenblick digs deep into the heart of a family in crisis with humor, hope, and impressive sensitivity.

    "Marvelous, wonderful young adult fiction!"

Jordan Sonnenblick writes great YA books. The target audience for this one is ages 12 - 13, but adults will like the book. Narration is superb!

"So glad I didn't pass up this one!"

Great story. Sad, funny and uplifting all in one. Listened to all of it in one sitting.

Almost passed because I saw it was meant for pre-teens/YA, but another reviewer said it was good for all ages and I'm glad I took their advice.

The narrator did a great job with all the characters and voices, I want to see what else he's narrated now.

Only thing I didn't like was the music playing over the very beginning and end. Always dislike music playing on top of the audio, just glad it wasn't like that at the beginning of every chapter like some others I've heard.

"Great messaging shines through a natural story."

Great messaging shines through a natural story. Narrator does an excellent job portraying characters from the first person's perspective. Good middle school book, too.

    "Overwhelming"

This book is fantastic by itself, but the Narrator made it 10 times better. I have never used Audible before but I have heard a lot of good things about it. I used it for a few books I was assigned to read over the summer, and what I got was amazing. Not was it only simple to use but I actually wanted to use the app! It's a very welcoming app. I was astonished by the quality of the audio and how it had emotion! I have never seen anything like it.

    "Excellent in every way possible!"

I downloaded this book on a special offer from Audible. It was easily one of the best things I did all year. This book was something special.

The narrator could not have been more perfect! Joel Johnstone made the ramblings of a teenage boy so real and intense and irksome and heartbreaking and just oh so special that I Iaughed and cried and remembered.

Do your heart a favor and download this listen. It is well worth the time.

    "Take me instead..."

I am a 35 year old male, I have been weightlifting for 20 years, I run marathons, drive a sport car and a 1.3 liter custom motorcycle. I used to work in a field that other people call "special"...
I am also a father of a three years old boy ... and could not stop the tears filling my eyes while I was looking away in order for people not to see me or even pulling aside the road while driving because it was difficult to do anything else.
I cannot imagine how it is for a parent to go through this, let alone a little older brother.
I don't understand what happens that we forget or don't understand how lucky some of us are.
    Everybody should read this book...
