Ghost wants to be the fastest sprinter on his elite middle school track team, but his past is slowing him down in this first electrifying novel of a brand-new series from Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award-winning author Jason Reynolds.

Ghost. Lu. Patina. Sunny. Four kids from wildly different backgrounds with personalities that are explosive when they clash. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle school track team - a team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other, but to themselves.

Ghost has a crazy natural talent, but no formal training. If he can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasons - it all starting with running away from his father, who, when Ghost was a very little boy, chased him and his mother through their apartment, then down the street, with a loaded gun, aiming to kill. Since then, Ghost has been the one causing problems - and running away from them - until he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medalist who blew his own shot at success by using drugs, and who is determined to keep other kids from blowing their shots at life.

Love it for upper elementary and middle grades

A great story that will be relatable to kids. I can’t wait to recommend this book to my students who are reluctant readers. There is no bad language , which is hard to find in new books that deal with relatable kids who aren’t squeaky clean. Guy Lockhart nails the narration.

Beautifully Written, Unique Storyline, Many Lessons

Loved this book! The narrator is awesome and the many lessons the main character, Castle, learns along the way are thought provoking and inspiring.

Warning: this book does discuss violence and drugs- so carefully consider before introducing to younger readers.

Must Read!!!

This is absolutely a wonderful story about a young man dealt a difficult life but staying optimistic in the midst of it all. The narration is what truly draws you into the story. A fabulous book for reluctant boy readers. Great story with an even better message.

COACH!

I LOVED COACH'S VOICE. It made me laugh every time !!! Hearing it on audible was good because he had emotions, tones and levels of high and low in his voice. I really enjoyed it!
I liked the author started each chapter with "World Record for..." Kept my attention. Chapter 8 & 9 made me cry. Wow.
Did not like the ending.
Guess I have to get the series!!!!

Honestly one of the best reads ever.

I came into this thinking “ugh summer reading.” But when I got 10 pages in I was hooked, I couldn’t stop reading. I followed along with audible because the narration helped with the immersion. Overall, the best book you’re gonna find about sports. Or any book for that matter.
