It was called "The Titanic of the South." The luxury steamship sank in 1838 with Savannah's elite on board; through time, their fates were forgotten--until the wreck was found, and now their story is finally being told in this breathtaking novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Becoming Mrs. Lewis.

When Savannah history professor Everly Winthrop is asked to guest-curate a new museum collection focusing on artifacts recovered from the steamship Pulaski, she's shocked. The ship sank after a boiler explosion in 1838, and the wreckage was just discovered, 180 years later. Everly can't resist the opportunity to try to solve some of the mysteries and myths surrounding the devastating night of its sinking.

Everly's research leads her to the astounding history of a family of eleven who boarded the Pulaskitogether, and the extraordinary stories of two women from this family: a known survivor, Augusta Longstreet, and her niece, Lilly Forsyth, who was never found, along with her child. These aristocratic women were part of Savannah's society, but when the ship exploded, each was faced with difficult and heartbreaking decisions. This is a moving and powerful exploration of what women will do to endure in the face of tragedy, the role fate plays, and the myriad ways we survive the surviving.

I read Becoming Mrs. Lewis. So I knew I was in for a treat with Surviving Savannah, but it surpassed my expectations. Patti Callahan has a way with words and telling a story. She goes from one time period/character to another flawlessly. The narrators were fantastic and making us feel as though we were truly hearing first person.

Historical Fiction is my go to genre. I was excited when this book came out about an event I didn’t know. The author did a good job with the split time periods. The narration was excellent and the book was very engaging. I will be looking up other books written by Patti Callahan.

She’s a good writer and told the story well. I could have done with less of the ships demise & people accounts.

Pretty good

I always enjoy historical fiction and really enjoyed this story. I learned much about the sinking of the steamship Pulaski and the families connected to the survivors and those lost in the disaster. I loved the dual timeline used to present the story.

I live in Savannah & I loved this book! It taught me more about the struggles of the past.

I put this off for too long!

The story of the Pulaski itself is fascinating, but it was almost lost on the horrible narration. The southern accents are beyond cheesy, and I felt embarrassed for the narrators- especially when voicing the male characters.
This would have been much better had Everly‘s story been left out, or minimized. The chapters that were set in the time period of the Pulaski were far superior to the “Everly: present day“ chapters. Her over-the-top, philosophical diatribes nearly did me in. And the relationship between her & Oliver was beyond annoying & completely unnecessary.

I would have enjoyed learning more about Augusta and Lily, and far less about the modern day characters.

Interesting story—awful narration

The premise of examining the living after surviving was intriguing. I so enjoyed this book I would consider listening to it again.

Couldn’t stop listening
