"A heart-wrenching exploration of the decisions women must make when their loyalties are put to the test.” –Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Apothecary

A woman must rescue her cousin's family from a train bound for Auschwitz in this riveting tale of bravery and resistance, from the bestselling author of The Lost Girls of Paris

1942. Hannah Martel has narrowly escaped Nazi Germany after her fiancé was killed in a pogrom. When her ship bound for America is turned away at port, she has nowhere to go but to her cousin Lily, who lives with her family in Brussels. Fearful for her life, Hannah is desperate to get out of occupied Europe. But with no safe way to leave, she must return to the dangerous underground work she thought she had left behind.

Seeking help, Hannah joins the Sapphire Line, a secret resistance network led by a mysterious woman named Micheline and her enigmatic brother Matteo. But when a grave mistake causes Lily’s family to be arrested and slated for deportation to Auschwitz, Hannah finds herself torn between her loyalties. Maybe it's just me and I don't know better but I have really enjoyed Jenoff's books and it seems she should be much more popular. I have listened to all her books and really empathize with the characters which are mostly young people, Jews for hte most part, making their way through World War II as best they can.

There have usually been Polish elements to her books and while this one is set mostly in Belgium there are some Polish references.

I suppose the author will continue writing her books and I will continue looking forward to them.

surprised the author isn't more well known

This was a very good book. It kept me engaged from beginning to the end.

This was great

It was a good story line and the performance was very well done, in my opinion. Love/hate comes into it with liking then getting angry with the characters. Also, made me stop and think , how would I have acted in a similar situation.

while the historical context is intrinsically fascinating, the plot twists distract from story. The twists seem to be the way the author gets out of corners she wrote herself into a corner. Early twists did advance the plot. However, they became more and more outrageous. The are far better books about the comet line.

More Twists than a rollercoaster

I listen to many books about the resistance and the role of women. The plot following three women, I thought, was engaging despite the character of Lily. I guess in hindsight there were many women like her, naive and blind. In fairness, many men also refused to get involved in anything that didn't involve their families, I guess I just found Lily unlikeable.
I thought the performer's voice was particularly annoying. Her whispery softness of all the characters made it both difficult to hear and to know which person was talking. The exception to the commonality of the voices was Georgie. He had such a baby voice that i thought he must be around four years old. Later we found that George was really eight. I almost sent the book back because of the voices but I am glad that I finished it.
Other that the performer, the book was good. Had I actually read the book, I think I would have enjoyed it more.

Plot was interesting
