Publisher's summary

She was unmarried, untouched, and almost 30, but novelist Amanda Briars wasn't about to greet her next birthday without making love to a man. When he appeared at her door, she believed he was her gift to herself, hired for one night of passion. Unforgettably handsome, irresistibly virile, he tempted her in ways she never thought possible . . . but something stopped him from completely fulfilling her dream.

Jack Delvin's determination to possess Amanda became greater when she discovered his true identity. But gently-bred Amanda craved respectability more than she admitted, while Jack, the cast-off son of a nobleman and London's most notorious businessman, refused to live by society's rules. Yet when fate conspired for them to marry, their worlds collided with a passionate force neither had expected . . . but both soon craved.

Contains mature themes.

Fell in love with the characters...and the story.

I've read every one of LK's books....many many times. This one took a couple tries to get into. Beverly Crick's voice as a story teller is a bit maudlin for me. BUT her character voices in this book were amazingly well done. Jack's voice was especially appealing to me. LK is a very talented author who draws readers/listeners into the story and holds us there. Thank you, LK....and thank you Beverley Crick. I can't wait for the next collaboration of these two talented ladies.

Love the book, not that thrilled with the narrator

Have been waiting, hoping, crossing my fingers that this Lisa Kleypas title would finally be available from Audible. It's one of my favorites of Lisa's books - and that's saying a lot. But could not but notice how much better it would have been if narrated by Rosalyn Landor or Mary Jane Wells - they bring her books to life in the best possible way. Know this was recorded years ago, but the difference in what's available now and this older version was the only drawback to this wonderful story. If it had been narrated by either of these fantastic actresses, it would have been five stars across the board.

Just very thankful it's now available thru Audible - thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

Great story, brutal narration

The story is great, but the narration makes it nearly unlistenable. The narrator uses a really bad Irish accent while sounding like Kermit the frog. She also has weird inflection points. Overall, I wish this was read by Mary Jane Wells or Rosalyn Lindor because it's one of my favorite Lisa Kleypas books.

I adored this 20 years ago and I adore it still

I like my regency gents to be rakes and rogues, and my ladies to be smart but still feminine and vulnerable. I also like to see bookish, slightly plump originals find their HEA with hot-bodied, and talented lovers. And I love saucy, teasing dialogue, especially when delivered with the right accent.

The flirty, dirty banter between these two was great in the written version. But, this is where audio books really shine; I loved the narrator’s Irish brogue for Jack and her sweet British accent for Amanda.

The summary, forecasting Amanda hiring a man to deflower her 30 year old virginal self, should make clear that sex will be an immediate focus. But honestly, after the opening interlude, and apart from kisses, the next sex scene isn’t until 5 hours in. So, no, gentle reader, this is not all sex and no story. After that, there are 5-6 scenes, which is more than “typical” regency fare. If it bothers you that much, then by all means, pass on this book.

However, I think those who pass on this are making a mistake. This is a story equally sexy and sweet, with two very likeable, but flawed characters. They are exasperatingly dim when it comes to recognizing love, but aren’t we all?

Started and ended pretty good

When the conflict finally occured I found myself thoroughly disliking the heroin. she became bratty and completely spineless, and that just really ticked me off. I found myself wanting to skip to the resolution.

Other that those chapters, I really liked the story.

Exquisitely entertaining

The worst part about it is there’s no sequel!!! I would listen to 10 more. One of her best tales yet. And Beverly A Crick Is a superior narrator!
