Publisher's Summary

Could the sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville have been caused by the gigantic ghostly hound which is said to have haunted his family for generations? Arch-rationalist Sherlock Holmes characteristically dismisses the theory as nonsense. Claiming to be immersed in another case, he sends Watson to Devon to protect the Baskerville heir and to observe the suspects at close hand.

Could It Get Any Better?

Nope, probably not! After listening to a dramatized version, I decided I needed to revisit the genuine Conan Doyle article.

Dated it may be, and it may have become something of a cliche, but "The Hound" still resonates. It's a great, suspenseful yarn and makes for a wonderful short listen - especially with the hallowed tones of Derek Jacobi.

I say go for it!

Derek Jacobi, 'nuff said

Worth it for his reading of the story's climax alone! Nice work from Sir Derek, and of course the original ripping good yarn.

Excellent Reading

I purchased this version of the story specifically because it was read by Derek Jacobi, and I'm so glad I did! He was absolutely perfect for the role, and even huffed and puffed Watson expertly. Recommended!

Very entertaining

Excellent audiobook and excellent narration by Jacobi. I read the book many years ago and enjoyed it very much. However, listening the audiobook and the life and personality of the characters was like reading the book fir the first time.

Love it!

You know Sherlock Holmes. You've seen adaptations on TV, you know his stories. But, listening/reading the books is just wonderful. By reading, you gain a deeper understanding of Holmes, of Watson, of Victorian England and Derek Jacobi is an amazing narrator. He is perfect for the job. So even though you may be familiar with the stories, have a listen and instead of being preoccupied with 'who done it' (cos you probably know already), enjoy the journey and allow Holmes to lead you there in his own unique way.

Feels like being on the moors!

Each character was excellently narrated! The narrator really brings the story to life and you feel like you are there on the mysterious moors with Watson and Holmes trying to figure out what's going on, recommended!

Classic Holmes

Have you listened to any of Derek Jacobi’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Derek Jacobi is an excellent narrator, and perfect for Sherlock Holmes.

Any additional comments?

Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the great novels of British literature. Part mystery, part Gothic horror, it is the one Sherlock Holmes story everyone has heard of, and it does not disappoint. If you're not familiar with it and are considering this audiobook then you're in for a treat.

Brilliant

Derek Jacobi reads this story beautifully. I found I wasn't aware I was listening to a book as I was there on the moors in my mind.

Better being unabridged too.

A true Sherlockian classic

Would you consider the audio edition of Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles to be better than the print version?

In my humble opinion the audio version is better. It takes a true classical Sherlock Holmes tale on the moors of the English countryside into a masterpiece with appropriate narration awash in the culture of the time by Jacobi. I will admit that I was introduced to Holmes by Cumberbatch's modern day version - also excellent - but in my head whenever I hear Holmes I see Benedict and hear Jacobi.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I believe my favourite scene was the denouement where Holmes, Watson and certain other characters finally discover the true nature of the hellish hound! This sequence was full of tension and energy and excitement in true Doyle fashion. I can't wait to get to The Valley Of Fear.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I could hardly put it down! I got through it as quickly as I possibly could.

Definitely worth the read.

As a story originally published in 1902 I was amazed to find how easy a read it was and really enjoyed it.

I have always loved the character of Sherlock Holmes though had yet to read any of the original work. I think I was afraid that I may find myself not like the works so I put it off. But alas I found the writing to be rather poetic and find myself wanting to read more Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
