Publisher's summary

Shabby and lumbering, with a face like a Norfolk dumpling, Father Brown makes for an improbable super-sleuth. But his innocence is the secret of his success: refusing the scientific method of detection, he adopts instead an approach of simple sympathy, interpreting each crime as a work of art, and each criminal as a man no worse than himself...

Here you will find the complete Father Brown stories in the chronological order of their original publication.

  • The Innocence of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 1,
  • The Wisdom of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 13,
  • The Donnington Affair Starts at Chapter 25,
  • The Incredulity of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 26,
  • The Secret of Father Brown Starts at Chapter 38,

Good collection, bad editing, bad American accent

I liked these stories. It took me a few to get into them and I would often get confused between one story ending and another beginning which I solved by always adding a sleep timer to end at the end of the chapter. The reader is pretty good but there are some weird jumps and repeats in the editing and he has a pretty bad American accent. Overall, I liked that the same reader reads all of the stories.

Great stories ruined by narrator

This narrator shouts the words at the listener like a drill sergeant, with no wit or charm or twinkle which is needed for these warm stories. Suggest buying a different version.

Not complete - recording terminates at 36%

Paired with ebook for immersion reading and enjoyed ... until recording terminates just as "Pendragon" tale ending

Not quite what I was hoping for

I enjoy the series but found the reading rather dry and dull. I guess I just had my heart set on feeling the same enjoyment I do of the TV series.

Amazing collections

This is an amazing collection of the Father Brown Mysteries. I love listening to this book and will repeat it. Every chapter is a complete mystery so it is easy to stop and start the book. This will be a treasure in your library

Good but not Great

While GKC is deserving of many accolades, writing not the least, writing murder mysteries are not that which elevates him above the common and on occasion, juvenile and even vulgar. AC Doyle sets the standard, peaks the interest, holds the attention, and leaves the reader desiring more.

Father Brown in any form is a treat

Father Brown is as charming here as he is anywhere. A wonderful rendition of much told mysteries makes them feel new again. Worth the time and money!

I'm a Father Brown Super-fan

Loved the Narrator (spot on) and could likely listen to Stephen S. read practically anything. I actually enjoyed these stories more than the PBS Series with one very disturbing issue. I had to recall that the author wrote these rather a long time ago because not only were there racially offensive words on occasion but a hint of the sentiment as well. It took me quite aback and I considered dropping off it altogether. But I reminded myself that the author was naturally one more wretched victim of that era's ignorant racial biases.
That aside I truly appreciate the artistry of Chestertons' description of both scenes and characters, Father B's wit and odd sense of humor and ethical view of every case. Like I said I'm a Super-fan!

Not charming like the show.

The quality of the recording is bad. Many skips or technical problems. Also, this is not a charming audiobook. Nothing like the show.

Woeful

I liked the tv series so thought this would be the same.
Wrong.
The narrator has a monotone voice so all the participants sounded as Sean Connery or Micheal Cane were narrating.
May be just me, I found the whole of part 1 hard to follow, so the rest will not get a listen or mention.

Audible re do this!

Had major problems with this book. Downloaded first time, it was slow. When tried to listen a little alert came up stating it was unable to run it. So deleted and tried again, second time it stopped about ten minutes into first story! Read tales some years back and was looking forward to listening to them. No wonder it was so cheap! Not sure why its so bad running/downloading. The narrator was dire. what i heard of it too.. Avoid if I were you. sending it back

Monotonous narration

The stories might be ok, but it drags and you miss some of the story because you stop listening at times...feels so uninteresting due to the narrator not being up to scratch. Overall, downloaded 41 hours and listened to only 3 hours worth, one to avoid unless you only listen to one chapter every so often

Good narration, easy listening.

As someone unfamiliar with the TV show I found myself enjoying these short stories which are similar in style to Sherlock Holmes. If you're looking for a romping narrative and nail biting tension this probably isnt the audiobook for you. The stories contained within can be digested individually with no need to start at the beginning. I found this easy listening whilst working from home and driving as I could zone in and out without feeling that I had missed a key plot line. Great if like me you stick an audiobook on before going to bed and can never remember where you were up to by the time you fell asleep! The narrator is easy on the ears and consistent throughout.

Entertaining Period Stories

Cracking good stories for the period they were written. One needs to take oneself to this time to appreciate the ambience and relevance. An historical time piece.
