New military fantasy from the creator of Monster Hunter International, Larry Correia, and master of horror Steve Diamond.

The war between Almacia and the Empire of Kolakolvia is in its hundredth year. Casualties grow on both sides as the conflict leaves no corner of the world untouched.

Illarion Glaskov’s quiet life on the fringes of the empire is thrown into chaos when an impossible tragedy strikes his village. When he is conscripted into the Tsarist military, he is sent to serve in The Wall - an elite regiment that pilots suits of armor made from the husks of dead golems.

But the great war is not the only - or even the worst - danger facing Illarion, as he is caught in a millennia-old conflict between two goddesses. He must survive the ravages of trench warfare, horrific monsters from another world, and the treacherous internal politics of the country he serves.

At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Larry Correia is the Dragon Award-winning, best-selling author of the Monster Hunter International series, the Saga of the Forgotten Warrior series, the Grimnoir Chronicles, and the Dead Six series of military thrillers.

Steve Diamond founded and runs the review site Elitist Book Reviews, which was nominated for the Hugo Award in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He writes for Ragnarok, Baen, Privateer Press, and numerous small publications. He is also the editor of the horror anthology Shared Nightmares.

An excellent blend of Sci-Fi, Fantasy, mythology, and trench warfare. The framework has been laid for an incredible new series.

EXCELLENT

The story was stellar, and the flow was like the smoothest river ride imaginable... bringing to life several characters is, in my layman's opinion, very difficult, it eas done seemingly effortlessly... the life in the main and secondary characters were real and tangible!

I can't wait for the 2nd installment!!!

Theater of the mind like no other!

Brutal world with little joys but enthralling once you get into it. Not crazy about the narration. His Russian accents are a bit stilted. Honestly, would have preferred no accents. This reader is usually excellent.

A little slow to start…

Larry, the master of action, and Steve Diamond, the modern H.P. Lovecraft, have spun a compelling yarn about war, friendship, and terrifying otherworldly beings in this WWI-inspired story.

Fast paced and excellent

I enjoyed this story of a young man, Illarion, sent to war, and thriving. His unit, The Wall, operates metal suits of armor powered by soldiers and golem remnants. Illarion is driven to the army by a netherworld monster that killed everyone in his village and nearly killed him. He enlists to appease a goddess who saved him. Illarion battles include human monsters as well as supernatural creatures.

WWI like trench warfare with divinities and monsters

A great start to a new fantasy series. Combines WW1 era warfare, battle magic, and folklore into a compelling story.

Fantastic story about fantasy power armour on the Eastern Front of a parallel universe WW1. Well executed. Can’t wait for more.

The plot continues to thicken without you realizing where it’s going, simply great! Cannot wait to listen to the next one in the series

Great story that ties everything together well

I blew through this book. It was so freaking good. Hooked me from beginning to end.

It actually reminded me a lot of All Quiet On the Western Front. For all the masculine badassery, there is no glorification of war in this book. It's dirty, bloody, and hard to look at. It's obvious that Steve and Larry did a ton of research for this, and it feels remarkably authentic.

The horror elements lend themselves well to a WWI inspired setting. Not for a moment did they feel out of place. Also, the mechs feel remarkably well thought-out and like a natural extension of the world.

Finally, each POV is a delight to read. While some characters are certainly more... complicated than others, all of them have depth, and switching between each one feels like you're getting a unique perspective on events.

Not since Dead Six have I been so interested in a Larry Correia collaboration. I loved lost planet but I could not stop listening to this book. Really like it. If you like fantasy, WW1, Tsarist Russia, & mech suits check it out.

Very good
