We live in a competition loving culture. We love the performance, the big win, the ticking seconds of the clock as the game comes down to the wire. We watch games and cheer, sometimes to the point of obsession, but if we really wanted to see greatness - wanted to cheer for it, see it happen, understand what made it happen - we’d spend our time watching, obsessing on, and maybe even cheering the practices instead.
In The Four Agreements, a New York Times best seller for over seven years, don Miguel Ruiz revealed how the process of our education, or “domestication,” can make us forget the wisdom we were born with. Throughout our lives, we make many agreements that go against ourselves and create needless suffering.
One afternoon - after another failed attempt to get motivated to exercise - I (accidentally) started my first mini habit. I initially committed to do one push-up, and it turned into a full workout. I was shocked. This "stupid idea" wasn't supposed to work. I was shocked again when my success with this strategy continued for months (and to this day). I had to consider that maybe I wasn't the problem in those 10 years of mediocre results. Maybe it was my prior strategies that were ineffective, despite being oft-repeated as "the way to change" in countless books.

And much more!

Who was your favorite character and why?
Daniel's voice breathes life into the narrative.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. It's short and to the point.
Any additional comments?
Love the writer and the narrator.

This is just the plan that I need to accomplish the ongoing projects that I am involved in. It is very easy to get sidetracked in your day and not get important work completed on time. This time management plan is to the point and practical. Thank you Ric Thompson.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Someone with the intellectual capacity of a moderately intelligent fifth grader, and absolutely no clue about how to find the time to make his bed at least once a week.
Would you ever listen to anything by Ric Thompson again?
I doubt it.
The good news? I listened this at 2x speed while I made washed lunch dishes, started dinner and cleaned a mess my oldest left in the workshop. As such, the only part of that 30 minute period of my life was WASTED was that I was listening to this puerile attempt to supply efficiency tips.
What three words best describe Daniel Penz’s performance?
Better than content.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Profound disappointment. I've consumed many books on habits, efficiency, etc. I thought this one hour long "unabridged" book might be short enough that my teens (good, but not off the charts students who, like many teens, have some trouble self-regulating and getting things done) might listen to because of its length and maybe pick up 2-3 helpful pointers.
HARDLY.
The book was vague, and offered no meaningful tips. For example, "close your door and tell your family you will be busy for 10 minutes," or "Careful to ignore your phone during that ten minutes [of theoretically awesome] productivity," or "Don't leave your 'time suck' internet applications open. You could be distracted for a long time by a social media website or interesting blogs."
Maybe the most absurd is the concept of rewarding yourself for successfully accomplishing a difficult 10 minute task by "Reading a book for 10 minutes," or by "watching 10 minutes of a favorite television show . . . but pause it after 10 minutes" or "Going to buy your favorite latte [assuming you could get there and back in 10 minutes]."
Is this guy for real?
Any additional comments?
I've been an Audible member for 3+ years, and go through 2-4 books per month. There are the periodic clunkers (Kudos, Audible for letting us return two every six months), but this is the absolute WORST I've ever downloaded.
Funniest part of it . . . the book begins with a disclaimer, a first in my experience that it is not a substitute for consulting with accountant, lawyer, etc. Trust me, there was NOTHING in here that came within 1,000 miles of legal or financial advice.
WHAT. A. JOKE.
