A revolutionary new approach to ADD/ADHD featuring cutting-edge research and strategies to help listeners thrive, by the best-selling authors of the seminal books Driven to Distraction and Delivered from Distraction

“An inspired road map for living with a distractible brain . . . If you or your child suffer from ADHD, this book should be on your shelf. It will give you courage and hope.” (Michael Thompson, PhD, New York Times best-selling co-author of Raising Cai)

World-renowned authors Dr. Edward M. Hallowell and Dr. John J. Ratey literally “wrote the book” on ADD/ADHD more than two decades ago. Their best seller, Driven to Distraction, largely introduced this diagnosis to the public and sold more than a million copies along the way.

Now, most people have heard of ADHD and know someone who may have it. But lost in the discussion of both childhood and adult diagnosis of ADHD is the potential upside: Many hugely successful entrepreneurs and highly creative people attribute their achievements to ADHD. Also unknown to most are the recent research developments, including innovations that give a clearer understanding of the ADHD brain in action. In ADHD 2.0, Drs. Hallowell and Ratey, both of whom have this “variable attention trait”, draw on the latest science to provide both parents and adults with ADHD a plan for minimizing the downside and maximizing the benefits of ADHD at any age. They offer an arsenal of new strategies and lifestyle hacks for thriving with ADHD, including

  • Find the right kind of difficult. Use these behavior assessments to discover the work, activity, or creative outlet best suited to an individual’s unique strengths.
  • Reimagine environment. What specific elements to look for - at home, at school, or in the workplace - to enhance the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit inherent in the ADHD mind.
  • Embrace innate neurological tendencies. Take advantage of new findings about the brain’s default mode network and cerebellum, which confer major benefits for people with ADHD.
  • Tap into the healing power of connection. Tips for establishing and maintaining positive connection “the other Vitamind C” and the best antidote to the negativity that plagues so many people with ADHD.
  • Consider medication. Gets the facts about the underlying chemistry, side effects, and proven benefits of all the pharmaceutical options.

As inspiring as it is practical, ADHD 2.0 will help you tap into the power of this mercurial condition and find the key that unlocks potential.

I found the authors’ take on ADHD simple but helpful. As a father of an adult daughter with ADHD, I found lots of helpful information in this book. “A race car brain with bicycle brakes”. It expanded my understanding of ADHD, and helped reassure me that medication is often the best route to go for treatment in addition to exercise and mindfulness.

A simple but important message

I just took placement of a foster daughter with adhd. She has a lot of trauma and struggles with behaviors. This book really helped me understand how her brain and thought process works. Though things still aren’t great I’ve seen small improvements. And that’s a win to me.

I was hoping to come away from this book with a new set of practical tools for self-management and supporting other ADHD people in my life. Instead, it mostly follows the narrow “ADHD is a superpower” narrative and is weirdly focused on entrepreneurship as the great ADHD calling. It does not discuss ADHD’s categorization as a disability in the US, wherein the ADA requires workplaces to allow people a range of accommodations that would seem to fit with the authors’ narrative and advice.

A fair segment of this book also made me uncomfortable with respect to the language around bodies and food. I would have expected the authors to be more sensitive to the subject, considering many people with ADHD have complicated relationships with food and eating as a dopamine source and often struggle with binge eating as a result. The authors also seem to at least tacitly accept ABA as a legitimate treatment model for autism and ADHD symptoms, even as they encourage replacing it with the social learning model, yet there is little discussion of other practical methods for immediate, acute symptom management.

That being said, I commend the authors for unequivocally advocating for medication as an effective management tool and creating individual education plans (IEPs) for kids with ADHD and common co-occurring developmental or learning disabilities.

This has to be the most clear, concise, but thorough book I’ve found on ADHD. I found comfort in being so understood and strength in practical, holistic approaches to thriving with ADHD. Thank you!

Excellent for those who struggle with ADHD and those who love us

This book is written to you if you have ADHD unlike most that are written clinically or to parents and teachers dealing with ADHD. It’s incredibly helpful and mind opening especially if you’re just on your journey for diagnoses.

Well written and read

The reader is ok, the speed and pronounciation is good. The content is also good as it is the newest book of the Dr.Hallowell so far. Still it is very dense with the content, will need to listem second time to understand and remember more. Not very long, about 4h.

Enjoyed listening but need to recap
