One of the most complicated and advanced computers on Earth can't be purchased in any store. This astonishing device, responsible for storing and retrieving vast quantities of information that can be accessed at a moment's notice, is the human brain. How does such a dynamic and powerful machine make memories, learn a language, and remember how to drive a car? What habits can we adopt in order to learn more effectively throughout our lives? The answers to these questions are merely the tip of the iceberg in The Learning Brain.

For many centuries, people knew this was true. But no one was sure how it happened. Now, thanks to the exciting new field of neuroscience, we can chart the workings of the brain and the rest of the nervous system in remarkable detail to explain how neurons, synapses, neurotransmitters, and other biological processes produce all the experiences of everyday life, in every stage of life.

Publisher's summary
Learning is a lifelong adventure.
It starts in your mother's womb, accelerates to high speed in infancy and childhood, and continues through every age. Whether you're actively engaged in mastering a new skill, intuitively discovering an unfamiliar place, or even sleeping - which is fundamental to helping you consolidate and hold on to what you've learned - you are truly born to learn around the clock. But few of us know how we learn, which is the key to learning and studying more effectively.
This series of 24 vibrant and accessible lectures has been designed to change that. Designed by an award-winning psychology teacher and expert on how people of all ages master new skills and information, it sheds light on what's going on when we learn and dispels common myths about the subject.
Professor Pasupathi's many examples cover the modern history of research on learning, from behaviorist theory in the early 20th century to the most recent debates about whether IQ can be separated from achievement - and even whether a spectrum of different learning styles and multiple intelligences really exists.
The lectures are also a rich source of readily implemented tips on how to excel in many different learning situations, including mastering difficult material, motivating children to learn, and preserving learning aptitude as we grow older.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio.

Rather, explosive kids are lacking some crucial skills in the domains of flexibility/adaptability, frustration tolerance, and problem solving, and they require a different approach.

Struggling to at 60 as a first time Spanish student in a Guatemalan immersion program, I picked this listen to see what I was doing wrong. Come to find out I'm not doing anything wrong and my aging brain is doing just fine! And it confirmed for me the efficacy of the approach I'm taking. I can't recommend this lecturer highly enough. By far the best listen in a great group of lectures in general. You won't regret the investment in time or money.

Really interesting, awesome narrator!
This was a great lecture series if you're interested in the general concepts of learning, starting from when we are born all the way through old age. Some of the information I already knew, but a large portion of it was new to me, especially concerning particular studies. Dr. Pasupathi has a wonderful voice to listen to, she's very precise in how she words and explains concepts, and she has no problem saying when we just don't know something yet. Those were the parts I actually found most fascinating, because we are always told what we "know", but you don't necessarily hear about the shortcomings of those theories or the things we can't even begin to figure out how to test yet. My favorite lectures were definitely the last few. Those dealt with types of intelligence, learning styles, IQ, and all sorts of concepts you hear thrown around in daily life. Pasupathi breaks these down into where the ideas came from, how they have been used or misconstrued, and whether there is any merit or use for them. She did this with all of her lectures, but the last few were more interesting to me because they can be applied to everyday life. If you like psychology, or are particularly interested in how different people of all ages learn, then give this a shot!
