Ripley's a tomboy at heart who has never met a stranger. Her plans were to finish her veterinary studies and take her family to the country, where life wouldn't be such a struggle. As the lights go out and silence spreads over the city that never sleeps, four ordinary strangers - a bike messenger, a homeless person, a support rep, and an ex-convict - must forge a connection in order to stay alive. For decades, American administrations have forced our military to be neutered in many respects - hampered by restrained rules of engagement, passed in strength by Russia and China, and tested by rogue nations like North Korea and Iran. As a result, nuclear Armageddon hangs over us like a mighty sword. Military analysts agree that the United States can't start World War III. Why? We might lose. Sabers are rattling, and the war of words escalate between America and her enemies....

Anything relying on a computer is fried, including the plane his daughter is on.

Lauren Russell often wondered why her father had been so adamant about teaching her skills that most other fathers wouldn't even consider teaching their daughters. Ever since she was little, she had been taught how to live and survive outdoors, and how to use firearms to protect herself and those around her. Some of the training had been a bit extreme. Or had it been? Many of her questions were answered the day the world as she knew it ended.
As a prepper, Grayson Rowan was prepared for almost anything...anything other than being totally alone when the sh*t hits the fan. While he sat back and watched the US rattle swords with Korea, play chicken with Russia, and strong-arm China, he felt sure if the lights went out that he and his family would be ready and safe. What he wasn't prepared for was his family not being home if it ever happened. Olivia Rowan is with her sisters, Gabby and Emma, on a girls-only trip to Myrtle Beach. Graysie Rowan, a freshman at university, just wants to go home.
Three months after life as she knows it was decimated, Megan Wolford has only one goal: protect her daughter, Caitlin, at any cost. The solar superstorm wasn’t supposed to hit Earth - the odds were against it. And yet, without any warning, everything changed. In a remote oceanfront town, life begins to spiral downward after the storm causes a global electrical blackout. As planes begin falling from the sky, Scott Montgomery watches helplessly as pandemonium consumes the world around him. But the loss of electrical power is just the first of the problems facing the survivors in the chaos that follows.
Russ and Anne Mathews live in a rural suburb in Tennessee. Regular people, with regular jobs, living a normal life - except for one thing. They are what many people call "preppers".
They have stocked up on supplies to survive any kind of event they can think of that may occur to disrupt life as they know it. When that event comes, they start preparing for the new way of life they will face. Along with their teenage son, and their next door neighbors and best friends, they plan their exit from a neighborhood too close to the city to a farm in the country. They just have to get there.
Their faith in their own capabilities and in humankind will be challenged, as they fight to protect and keep their supplies and, quite possibly, their lives.
When the Power is Gone is the first book in the A Powerless World Series, dealing with how life might be lived after an EMP. If you like post-apocalyptic fiction, this novel by PA Glaspy is a unique story from a woman's point of view.
Typical, same emo story ive heard time and time again. Need more lights out books imvolving the totally un-prepared as characters. I cant stand anymore of these where the chatacters happen to be rich or have killer jobs and happen to be preppers. I wanna hear about the zookeper who has no idea why all the cages suddenly unlocked when the lights go out. and his/her mission home. now thats a story

This book could be a 5 star story but I'll never know because listening to this narrator is like listening to long nails
on a chalkboard, This is nothing more than
a shopping list

The person reading the book did a good job but I found her voice irritating. Her voice reminded me of someone who I didn't like and I just couldn't get past that so I didn't finish the book. There were times that I learned some useful and important info but the characters. we're just too perfect, almost smug and a bit judgemental. That may have changed as the story progressed but I couldn't get there.
I too was looking for a good apocolyptic book from a woman's point of view. I too even started to write one. But then I found this series. Love the story and the narrator is the best I have heard yet! Can't wait to start 'When the Peace is Gone'.
nothing goes this smoothly on a regular Wednesday, much less during an emp inspired apocalypse . very Barbie-esk, with an instant solution to everything that pops up except for just shooting the bad guys. guessing that at my house, post emp, there will be more visits from Mr Murphy and more shooting but fewer cofflee breaks with fresh baked muffins......probably better suited for teen girls wishing to switch from vampire romance to dystopian fiction. 3 stars for effort
I listen to a lot of stories, nice premise but it falls way short, had to slow it down was being read to fast. Was not into this at all
The narrator was terrible.
The story was weak.
Peppers who have everything for every situation.
Everything happens just in the nick of time.
Completely unrealistic.
The bones of the story are okay but could be even better with some basic work. I want this and other authors to help the SHTF community to learn and not be given poor examples of "tactics".
I hope the author watches some good tactics videos and reads a few tactical books before the next installment. I only say this because I want to like the story and author and appreciate the time that went into it.
There are so many tactical mistakes made in the book the characters would all be dead by chapter six. There is no reasoning with desperate deadly people. Learn what is meant by "there are always other weapons and hidden threats." The characters show almost no tactical skill in spite of some of them allegedly having prior tactical skills training.
The narrator needs to learn about theatrical pause, but if she works on it she could be pretty good with more practice. Slow it down a little, going fast does not add excitement.
The author states she just wanted to write a book about a woman like her trying to live in an upside down world. She did a great job at making her a person, making her family people you care about.
My oldest daughter and I loved it! She constantly wanted to listen to the book! (no complaints from me!)
