Publisher's Summary

While the crew of the UN Expeditionary Force's pirate starship Flying Dutchman are enjoying a luxury vacation cruise (not!), UNEF troops are still stranded on an alien-controlled planet. Major Emily Perkins and her team are busy picking up the pieces, and it's not easy, because there is trouble on Paradise....

"Should have been part of Book 3"

Craig Alanson, please don't do this again. Don't take a side story, break it out and charge too much for it. This "book" should have been part of "Paradise." Did I enjoy this entry? Of course. It had RC Bray as narrator and Craig Alanson as its parent. But really, this feels like a wallet-grab. Craig, you have loyal followers. Don't gouge them or they will be less loyal.

As for the story, a nice subplot in the ongoing saga. Not up to the Joe/Skippy narrative, but good nevertheless. Neither Skippy or Joe are in think even. RC Bray is magnificent, as usual. And with this entry we flesh out more of the secondary characters. Perhaps knowing them better will become important in a future installment. I hope so.

Im still a fan. i just wish i didn't feel so dirty.

If you haven't read books 1-3, don't start here. But if you have read them, and you have splurge money, then go ahead.

But this felt like some editor or agent might have said: Take this side story out and repackage it as a standalone. You'll be able to sell it for a quick extra $20. Short-term strategy. Disrespectful to your fans. I'm pissed off that I paid $20+ for this "installment." Maybe $5.95. Really, should have been part of the Paradise book.

And yes, I'll buy the next bull-length installment. I love Col. Joe and Skippy.

"1/2 Book for Full Price... I Felt Cheated"

This is a new story arc, so I was barely able to get into it before it ended. While I knew that it was going to be a shortened book, I couldn't believe it when it ended after only 5 hours. I don't mind cliffhangers, but this one felt like it stopped at chapter 3. It felt like I got only 1/2 the book, but paid full price. Really frustrated at that.

    "No Skippy or Bishop"

I primarily like this series because of the dynamic interaction between Joe Bishop and the AI, Skippy. Neither made an appearance in this novella. I just couldn't get interested in this minor character backstory.

    "Short story not a book"

I love the story, disappointed this wasn't part of book 3. It should have been, felt too rushed and incomplete. One aspect of the series I enjoy, it makes me think (folding time space) I can see a story developing around Skippy where he could be anything from just an AI to a sentinel to an Elder's consciousness. Wonderful possibilities. While the story of Paradise needed told, it should have been part of book 3.

Imagine my surprise when this $21 5hr 48m book is introduced as "Epiditionary Force, book 3.5", it certainly wasn't half price.

"Not what I was hoping for"

The story is important to the series, but should have been worked into the full length books. I question now whether I will continue with the series, because as much as I dug the first three books, I won't continue to buy full priced, quarter length sub plots. No Joe, eh, forgivable almost. No Skippy?? I really kind of feel like the narrator wasn't into it. What's book 3.75 going to be, a 2.5 hour tale of Skippy waiting on paradise for Joe to find him? Only $20.99

    "not too happy no skippy"

how are you gonna sell a book and not once have the main characters involved? this should have been a branch out story not part of the series. also this book had a scene where an alien group were sitting around eating biscuts and socializing i thought this group despised eating in public because they saw it as a biological weakness they had to endure.

    "Where's Skippy?"

I first encountered this story in book 2 and was overjoyed to find a series of 3 books. I love Skippy, he is very entertaining. I was disappointed that he wasn't in book 3.5. The continuing saga is still very good.

    "A So-So Escapade"
    Any additional comments?

The first three books are great; but let’s be honest, Expeditionary Force really is the ‘Skippy & Joe Show’. Without our protagonist duo, we are left following the shenanigans of the those stranded on the planet called Paradise. Although there is humour here, this tale felt rather flat without any Skippy & Joe interludes. I’m sure many die-hard fans will enjoy this escapade but for me it was just a little – how would Skippy put it? Meh?

    "Disappointed"

Disappointed that the book has been split into two just to make more money. Very short book for the money!

    Disappointed there's no Skippy!

    Disappointing and quite boring!!

    "A Decent Filler."

This is a decent interlude between books 3 and 4 of the series. While Skippy the Magnificent fans from around the globe eagerly await his and Joe Bishop’s return to their most amusing sparring we are treated to some military sci-fi based back on Paradise. Robbed of its dynamic duo it’s fair to say that the story loses a little of its lustre but it’s still a good read and there is some great action and adventure still to be had. The humans on Paradise are not united with UNEF’s efforts to impress the Ruhar being undermined by the Keepers and of course living in constant threat of attack. The Ruhar don’t like or trust the humans and so UNEF is fighting a constant battle for credibility and ultimately survival.

There is still some humour of course, it’s not all action and UNEF soldiers teaching a young Ruhar cadet some of the subtleties of human body language did make me laugh out loud. Yes, it’s not big or clever but since when did that matter? The narration is by RC Bray and unless you’ve somehow never heard him before then you’ll know what that means. Should you be in that group of poor unfortunates who haven’t heard him yet then you are in for a treat . . . but take the series in order as this will lose an awful lot as a stand-alone.

So, a good short(ish) interlude that whets the appetite for Black Ops. The lack of Skippy and Joe means it doesn’t hit quite the same high notes as the other books in the series but I wouldn’t miss it out on that basis.

    "Short, and no Skippy??? What?"

I know this is only book 3.5, but it still cost 1 credit and for that it's way too short. Great story and reading performance as usual, but no Skippy... that means 75% of the humour was missing. I assume the next half book will be free?

    "3.5"

This seem to me just to be a way to get even more money, calling a 3.5 just seem to be a bit of a rip off, with a price tag of £25 for a book that only last 5hrs seem a bit much.
That been said it was not a bad book and I only hope the next one will pick up form where this book stops.

I’ve enjoyed it- it is what it is- only it’s no where near as good as the main story- but happy enough.
If you are interested in the series - I’d recommend it- not sure if it’s important to read - probably not
