Children are not supposed to rescue their parents, life is supposed to be the other way around. And rescues aren't supposed to be needed on the trip out to the new colony planet Valhalla. Slow, yes. Boring, yes. Dangerous? No, the trip is not supposed to be dangerous, never has been.

When thieves attack the transport ship to steal an ancient alien artifact, and young Kaylee and her brother, Manny, are cut off from their parents, they have to stop the thieves from getting what they want, because once the thieves have the artifact, they're not leaving any witnesses.

I read this book because I loved the author’s series, EXFOR, AKA Expeditionary Force.
EXFOR is humor-packed, and this book doesn’t deliver much comedy relief until the last third of the book. I don’t understand why this was done. It makes the pacing kind of wonky and was tough to adapt to when you’re used to getting humor in each chapter from Craig Alanson.

The story was decent enough but the lack of humor of the majority of the book was a real let-down. I kept waiting for the funny parts, until they finally started...

Note to the author:

Please stick to keeping humor /comedy-relief throughout the book; it doesn’t need to be as dense as a trans-dimensional beer can cramming in an entity the size of a small moon, but at least put some it in every chapter, okay? Even if it’s a brief laugh, it _matters_. You’re good at it! Your serious stuff isn’t bad but the humor makes it so much more enjoyable.

Tough for this EXFOR reader to get through

An interesting but familiar plot. This is basically a tale of Home Alone in space. the primary characters being children are a bit annoying at times, that are forgivable and somewhat likable in their ignorance within a crisis situation.

entertaining relatively short story

I only got this book after listening to all the other books by Alanson, thinking the summary sounded somewhat dull. Man, was a wrong: I absolutely loved the plot! It was down to earth, with great characters, and good variety.

Absolutely loved the story!
